I'm glad they are adding the line for added sugars. DH is an insulin dependent diabetic and that information might influence some of his decisions, especially in the cereal aisle. I came across an item the other day that went back on the shelf when I saw the added sugar line so it is already influencing me. I also like the amount of D, potassium, and iron being labeled as those are nutrients that are common deficiencies.
The one thing that I would like to see go is the % Daily Value. At 2000 calories per day, I would gain at least a pound per week. However, I know that I need to consume much less than that level, but what about those people that don't read the fine print or monitor calories per day? It seems misleading and/or irrelevant.
Thanks for sharing.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone developed a smartphone app that could take a photo of a NI panel and present a customized version for our own particular statistics and caloric needs.

I understand why it's helpful to have portion sizes reflect what people actually eat. On the other hand, I kind of like the old way where portion sizes indicated what a "standard" portion was when people probably ate less than they do now. Maybe it's because I'm old and that's what I'm used to. As an example, the old portion size of ice cream - 1/2 C - really helped me eat less of it, or to count two portion sizes if that's what I actually ate. Now I think a standard portion is 2/3 C. That seems to me to encourage larger portions.

At last week’s discussion at the Stewdeeo, the leader pointed out several times that a serving is what the package says but a portion is what we eat. 1/2 cup of ice cream may seem reasonable to a member of WW because we are highly focused on controlling intake, but the general public who aren’t dieting, I’m sure, eat portions larger than 1/2 cup. That’s true of so many foods out there.
If by calling out larger serving sizes the FDA is saying “this is what you’ll likely need to eat to be satisfied,” then I find that informative. Why? Because I don’t look at mainly the serving size but the calories, fat, and carbs for that serving size. And when I see a larger number of calories per serving, that is when I tend to leave the product on the shelf.

I love jif which probably has all that nonsense you'd never poison your body with. If I ate it by the truckloads I could see that being troublesome but in moderation I see no issues. these judgy attitudes about food really annoy me and shaming your sister or anyone else for not being the picture of perfection for "pure and clean" eating is a little assuming.

I thought this was a good article about the coming changes to food labels next month. You may or may not agree with the nutritionist's view but I thought it was a good overview of what will change. I will try to copy/paste as I know some have issues seeing links without adverts. There is an image of the new/old label that I'll try to insert. "All the New Changes Coming to the Nutrition Label — and Why a Dietitian Approves
By Kelly Plowe, MS, RDNUpdated November 22, 2019 Fact Checked The new year is just around the corner, and for many of us, that means change is on its way. One "new" change that is for certain, and is coming to a grocery store near you, is the new nutrition facts label. The nutrition facts label is found on all packaged food items and details the nutrition contents of that food whether it's a box of crackers or a gallon of milk. The label is established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the current one is more than 20 years old. Trans fats were added to the label in 2003, but significant changes to the label haven't been made in over two decades despite the amount of research and knowledge we've acquired in" See link below for entire article. www.livestrong.com/article/13723146-new-nutrition-label/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=120819_sun_curated&c_crid=article1_ctaI think it would be a good thing if they were forced to identify the added sugars.

The thread subject was great. Judging people's choices to have peanut butter that isn't just peanuts and salt is what I took issue with. You can eat as clean and pure as you want to, but as you can see, it's not gonna make anyone feel the warm and fuzzies when you say the food they consume is "ugh" and "nonsense."

JIF is the only peanut butter that I will make my peanut butter cookies with and it has to be Extra Crunchy! The recipe I use is a supremely unhealthy one, full of butter and (SCREAM) Crisco plus the peanut butter. Nothing at all healthy about them but OMG they are the absolute most perfect peanut butter cookies on the planet. The recipe is from an ancient Betty Crocker cookbook. My ancient Betty Crocker cookbook was falling apart from overuse so when I saw a new one on the clearance pile in a bookstore I bought it. I would never throw my old BC cookbook away...it has all sorts of notations in it, including little scribbles that one of my kids made on some pages while I was making Christmas cookies with them long ago . When I went to look at the cookie recipes in the new book they had been cleaned up---my beloved peanut butter cookie had been changed and the Crisco had been removed. Blasphemy! I rarely eat peanut butter but when I do it is JIF Extra Crunchy. A friend introduced me to Skippy Natural Creamy with Honey. She always travels with a small jar and brought it to my house when she visited and I have to admit that it's a little addictive. It will never replace JIF in my heart but it's good. Confession: I don't make a sandwich with it. A blob of PB and a blob of blueberry preserves on a little plate is all I require or for quick fixes, just a spoon and the jars. A simple woman with simple needs.

This goes back 40 years but I use to get my peanut butter at a health food store. They ground it while you waited.

I bought a jar of peanut butter that was the purist form. Peanuts and salt. I could barely stand it. I added Splenda and a little granulated sugar to make it palatable. I want sweet peanut butter or bust! Otherwise I may as well just down some straight salted peanuts.
