I did stop at Target today and was surprised how empty that store was. Maybe everybody shopped early—or did most of their shopping online. That's how I felt today when I went to Target. There were no lines at the check-outs and the store didn't look very busy. I noticed a lot of empty shelves, especially in the grocery section, so I wonder if the stores aren't stocking up as much.

I turn to the Internet more and more because stores keep carrying less and less of the items I need to buy. I’ll only chase so many miles to big stores and find they don’t carry what I want or are repeatedly out of it before I don’t bother going to them—because the Internet is so convenient (even IF Amazon has become an evil empire!).

I know. I use amazon so much but I keep feeling like I need to cut the cord for moral reasons.

zazzles, I ordered something from the Target website and then picked it up 2 hours later at the store. Saved me from looking at many stores for my item. Plus, I didn't have to spend a lot of time browsing through the store and finding more things to buy that I probably didn't need. And, there was no charge for shipping and then having to wait for my item to arrive. Amazon may be a necessary evil but we've all come to depend on it. It sure is hard on the brick and mortar stores though.

It's not really a necessary evil. I really should not pay Jeff Bezos to stiff his hard working employees while he buys an 8th yacht and hoards obscene amounts of wealth while so many of his employees have trouble making ends meet. I can buy my kerastase hair products at the salon, my toilet paper at Ralph's and stick to Netflix and Hulu for streaming. We like the convenience and have become accustomed to it but anything I typically purchase on amazon I can certainly get elsewhere. And should. 😕

finreporter, I find the supreme irony to be that Borders and Barnes & Noble ran small bookstores out of business, then Borders was run out of business by Amazon. Having decimated the physical bookselling world, Amazon has now started opening Amazon bookstores. And the supreme irony? They’ve opened one in the Santana Row (upscale) outdoor mall directly across from the store that was Borders.

Are you serious? That's really crazy. And like the hypocrite I am I'm watching project runway reruns on amazon prime.

I find myself going directly to manufacturers' websites for certain things where, in the past, I would have ordered from Amazon. After getting several items that were obvious counterfeits from Amazon I no longer trust them like I did years ago. I always read the one-star reviews on things first and often see things like "parts missing, not what was pictured, obvious fake" etc, especially in the electronics dept.
Now that we can return (most) items at Kohl's it's not quite the annoyance that it once was but still---who needs that headache? That said, I still find myself going to Amazon for a lot of things but wouldn't buy electronics or anything really pricey from them. I just took a look at my order history and I see that most of my orders were for hard-to-find-in-stores things from third-party sellers. Oddball things for the RV like a furnace vent bug screen, a small cutlery tray that fits the little RV kitchen drawer, a set of lightweight nesting bowls, a combo non-slip stove topper and cutting board. Nothing expensive---when it came time to order an RV-specific GPS we went right to the Garmin site and got the same price as the great price on Amazon plus free shipping and it arrived in three days.
I don't think I will ever wean myself completely from Amazon but they are no longer the automatic go-to that they once were for me.
