Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Happy Weekend! We are starting the day with at temp of 29! And of course the snow came right when they predicted it would, around 6pm last night. I can't tell from up here how much we have so far, maybe 4"? Have not seen the current weather report, that will come on in a few minutes. I do know after this snow fall, by Monday we will be colder for a few days.
Robin, that whole area of the EIN #'s is way over my head. DH said he has never heard of what I am going thru, to access DB monies. The money in his credit union accounts are separate from his accounts with Edward Jones, financial planners. Congrats on the weight loss!!! That's great! I too weigh myself everyday, no matter if I am doing the WW program or not.
Marsha, you are looking good for your weigh in, congrats in advance! I had to LOL about your having to go out for milk, the traditional reason we run to the store before a snow storm, then when you get there the shelves are empty! Of course as we discussed, if you would go to Walmart, that would certainly be true! Good to hear your kids ran early, hope they both dodge the snow storm.
Gareth, glad your WW store closed for today. Kind of in the same vein, I remember way back when, when we first started at the church we joined for quite a few years, was lead by a woman Pastor, about our age, and she would not cancel service for nothing! There were times we could not figure out how she got to the church! After she left that church, they were more sensible about closing, thank goodness. DH did excellent on the stairs going up yesterday, I think even better than me, when I came home last year.
Carol, I think you are right, somewhat, about people who are late. With my DD tho, it is always little things, like they left to come to our get together, but then her or her DH forgot something, so they would have to go back to get it, just weird things like that. I too heard it is hard to break a will, and costly too.
Pinky, we are having fun now here, supposedly we will get more snow this morning, after snowing most of the night, then the high winds will kick in. A nice weekend to stay in. Looks like the cable guy actually got the issue fixed, so that is good, especially with that important game tomorrow!!! I hope you did not loose power, but at least you are well prepared if it does go out. I don't think it will get that bad here, and if it does, all we can do is sit and wait.
Anngie, goods times coming for you today, as with us. No escaping it now, we are fully into winter. Considering it is January 18th, I am fine with that, as it is so much closer to spring now, compared to having that darned snow in October, like we had! I had no issues with either shingles shot, as I mentioned the other day, I had my pneumonia shot, and that area of the arm is still very sore. At least those red spots are gone.
DH came home yesterday, and did very good, on all things he had to do, such as going up the stairs, sitting in his recliner, etc. He was wiped out, by the time I got him in bed, which I was so happy that he tried to sleep in and was successful. He is still in there, sleeping good. I have checked on him every so often (which means not a good night sleep), he got up once to go to the bathroom, but otherwise he is doing good in there.
Funeral home called saying my brother's ashes are back. Now I have to figure out when we want to bury him. Maybe the end of the week, when it is supposed to warm up a bit.
I just heard the plowing service out there, starting their plowing. I am surprised, as it is supposed to keep snowing for awhile. You think they would wait till it is done. Am happy that it looks like the cable guy finally fixed the issue with the TV's. My fight with the credit union ended with them winning. Even as I have all the paperwork to access his money at the credit union, they are sticking with some law saying I can not access his funds for 30 days. Oh well, it is what it is.
My mind is drawing a blank, (tired!), so I guess I am done blabbing. Have a nice day everyone, stay safe!!

Seems strange to be sitting here in my jammies when normally I'd be at work. Would've been nice to have slept in but the neighbor was snow blowing. We probably have 4" Sure seemed like more yesterday with the wind whipping it all around. More snow predicted this morning. Wind picks up today even more than yesterday and temps drop.
Karen, glad it's going good with DH home. I'm sure he slept better in his own bed. How's DD? When I worked at a grocery store the most popular items after milk and bread with an approaching storm was booze and cigarettes along with snacks.
I weigh myself every morning. I have the FitBit Aria scale which is nice that I can see my weekly average in the app. I can also look back at the graph for the past week, month and years. I find it helps with my weight maintenance. When I was in losing mode I did better weighing weekly.

Karen, I have certainly learned a lot since working for DH. I know things vary by state, but here, once we open an Estate account, the money can be accessed. However, I know thing are different in New Jersey. They can get Letters Testamentary or Administration, whatever they call it, that are temporary, and limit powers. There might be some limitation because of that. Also, you are not really supposed to distribute money to beneficiaries (other than reimbursement for expenses) for 7 months, which is the amount of time that creditors have for putting in a claim against the estate. Of course it could be a credit union rule. I find that banks are notorious for telling people there are laws that are really just their rules.
Maybe the plow is coming through in case anyone wants to go out. It's easier to clear a parking lot before everyone starts driving on it.
Gareth, I definitely like the idea of seeing a graph.
We are sitting here waiting for the snow, which won't arrive, it looks like now, until after 2:00, and it will probably be light when it does come. The temperature will warm through the afternoon, so the snow will turn to rain. We're staying in tonight though, I will make some steak, baked potato, and string beans. I might have a steak in the freezer that is a little larger that DH and I can share, or I will only have 1/2, because these are strip steaks, not filets which are more lean. I have some plain cooked chicken breasts for lunch. I picked up my car this morning. Very convenient that they were finally ready to fix it so I could use DH's car and not have to even deal with a rental, although it was covered by insurance.

Nasty out there and will be until late afternoon, and I suspect the winds still won't totally die down. Hard to tell an actual snow total when the wind blew it around so much but guessing right at 4 inches. That stopped yesterday but the winds just kept getting stronger. No travel is advised and the interstate 4 1/2 miles from us is closed from Sioux Falls to Fargo ND.
Karen--glad you got your DH home and he did so well. Good thing for PT. Glad your cable is working for that important game you have going on tomorrow. Hope all the ruckus you have going on with the credit union and getting things settled for your DB's estate will soon be behind you.
Gareth---enjoy your morning off.
Robin--the timing did work out nicely for your car repair, usually it is the opposite.

Karen, I did forget to say that I am glad your DH did so well with the stairs. I know you were worried about that. How many times a week will he have to go for PT?
Pinky, sounds like the snow total wasn't too bad, but I guess the roads must be really slick.

Karen, so glad DH did so well on the stairs! I’m sure that was a concern for you. Good too, that he had a good nights sleep. Sleep is good for what “ails” us I’ve always believed.
No snow yet but it’s still coming - from the west (thank you very much!). We could get up to 10” - but let’s face it, they really don’t know. I’m sure a snowblower will be involved regardless.
Robin, I’m finding your information interesting! I’ve got a question that was mentioned in a previous post - how can an individual contest a will and win? Why aren’t wills iron-clad? People draw up wills to see that their wishes are followed - but then overruled. Just wondering.
Gareth, it’s so nice to know you don’t have to go out when bad weather comes! It’s just one more thing not to worry about. Anything planned?
Pinky, when there’s a no travel advisory it must be bad - and roads closed too! We have never closed roads but maybe they should start.

Anngie, if someone feels that there was undue influence, or if the will was signed when the person really didn't have "capacity", in other words they were suffering from dimentia and didn't really know what they were doing, it can be. Let's say someone's caretaker brought them to a lawyer, and the children were all cut out, it can be contested. If one child is cut out and felt that there is no reason for them to be. For our friend who's DM just died, she went to a lawyer who we know, who made himself executor of the will and trustee for one son's trust, which had to be a special needs trust. She said she didn't want it to fall on the other son. My DH met with them, and said he really thought this was kind of suspect. The lawyer (who was suspended), will make an executor's commission, and his firm will get paid for the administration, if my DH doesn't convince him not to use them. He feels that his friend can contest this will, and at the very least get himself appointed executor, or possibly his wife, which is fine. She might be OK dealing with his brother. We had a situation where the will wasn't contested, but the step-father, who died after the mother, left them money to her 2 sons. He was estranged from his son, and they have not seen him in close to 50 years, and we couldn't even figure out if he was living or dead. The court decided that they should appoint a Guardian Ad Litem for the step-father's estate, this was after we got temporary letters issued for one son so they could sell the house. We successfully got him appointed permanently because we brought in the witnesses to the will who confirmed that the step-father knew what he was doing when he signed it. It just wasted a lot of money in costs, including having the pay the GAL, and additional fees of ours, even though we had to cut the true fee. It's usually one sibling fighting with another, or a wife fighting against the children, especially when it's a second wife without a pre-nup. I could actually write a book about what goes on when administering estates. We have another one where it was a 2nd marriage. The step son-in-law, who should not really be practicing law in NY because he doesn't have an office here, which is a guideline NY has, wrote a will for the man cutting out his own children, giving his money to her children. We met with him right before he passed away, and wrote another will for him where it gave his money to his children. Mind you she had a lot more money than he did, I think from a previous husband. Her children are challenging this will, and it is a nightmare. I was deposed because i was a witness. I saw the relationship his son and son-in-law had with him, he was in the hospital at the time, and there is no way he would have cut them out. There was so much love and concern there.
Snow started here close to an hour ago, and is much heavier than I expected. There might be a break around 4, so I have to be careful to watch, and walk the dog then. It has warmed up already, and the snow should turn to rain around 7:00. A good day to stay in an read.

Wow, Robin, what a mess! People really act ugly when it comes to money, don't they?
It's a beautiful day here. It's sunny and just a little cool, around 50. I thought it was supposed to be rainy, but obviously I was wrong.
DH had to go into work today. There have been computer problems all week and he needs to catch up so he will work today and Monday which he was supposed to have off because of MLK day.
I went to the library used book sale. I found a couple of light mysteries. The sale had been open for a while by the time I got there. I think some people come first thing and try to get newer books that they can resell though websites.
I hope everyone stays warm and safe. Karen, good for your DH for being in the recliner.

Robin---no the roads are not slick as it is too cold for that, but the visibility is terrible with the light snow fall from yesterday and 40-50 mph winds. Also it causes drifts on the roadways and people get stuck. Yes you have seen many interesting situations with your work.
Anngie---Your welcome from the west! It is really bad, sometimes I cannot even see our shop from the house and that is only about 250 feet from the house. They have started shutting down the interstate much sooner the last few years. I think because so many people still think they should be out and about and they go out and do dumb stuff such as going in the ditch because they cannot see with the poor visibility or get stuck in a drift, and even just plain stop on the road because there will be a complete whiteout and then the next car comes along and then there is an accident. Emergency personal shouldn't have to be out in this for unnecessary reasons when people just won't stay home. Closing the interstate is a big help for that, although there really is no way to close other major or minor highways and some people just don't listen to "travel not advised".
I have been listening to Crawdads quite a bit today as I only have 3 days left. I think I have about 15 chapters left so would like to finish it before it goes poof, plus I am loving it.

Good morning. Brrr!!!! Another cold one in the apartment. Temp outside is 12, and of course we wanted the apartment heat turned down last night. 25 should be our high today, which will be fine.
Gareth, doesn't that just figure! When you can finally sleep in, a neighbor has to ruin it. I can understand that during the week, as most people have off on Saturday, so why was it so important to snow blow so early on a Saturday morning?! LOL, yes, when I worked at the store, those were the most popular items needed for a storm!!! Then of course the gas stations were busy. I remember when we had that blizzard back in April of 18, with it lasting all weekend, there were people out cruising around, just to look at how bad it was everywhere, so you had to have gas in your vehicle to do that.
Robin, my DH said just what you said, that the "law" the credit union is telling me they have to follow about the 30 days is probably just their rule, and as we have been members there for years, they could probably wave that rule. I am done fighting about it, that month will fly by. WOW! Your stories of wills is just amazing! I sure am glad that with my siblings and I, we do get along, for the most part. I have had a little bit of my older brother's irritation with me, when I was trying to find a place for my DB to move to, so I just backed off, then with my sister not flying back here, I had to back off, and my DH keeps warning me that we have to keep exact records as when she comes home this spring, we can expect her to question every cent. I guess I am appreciating this winter, LOL!!! Not sure how much DH will have therapy, as he could not get into to them for the initial evaluation till Friday the 24th. But most likely it will be 3 days a week at first.
Pinky, on the national news last night, they were showing that whole area that with the highway closed, and wow, it just looked so bad! We didn't get it that bad, Friday night (as far as I know!), and it looks like we ended up with aprox 6" of snow. They were predicting strong winds following the snow, but it didn't look too bad to me, nothing like what you all had. I hope you didn't loose power. I can't remember...did you say you have a generator? I'm sure you do, with having all that you do. Will you be watching the games today? One minute I think the Pack can win it, then the next minute I am all worried about them falling on their faces, like the last time they played the 49ers.
Anngie, thank you. I am so happy with DH progression with his mobility, but with him being at the Rehab department for those 5 days did a world of good. I can't imagine how it would have been if they had sent him home. It is still very hands on care of him, but not as much as I thought it would be. Did you end up getting the 10" of snow? They said last night that we are up to 32" for the season, with 51" being normal for the whole season, but to me it does not seem like we had much before this snow fall, a lot of small series of snow falls, with some warm days in between, where the snow was able to melt. That is how winter should be, lol!!
Carol, sorry your DH has to work so much this weekend! I still can't get used to Monday's holiday. Where I worked never gave anyone off for it, when you work in health care, you are lucky to have off on the weekend, but this holiday tomorrow is one that clinics do not close for. I would not mind one bit having a temp of 50 here today, but I know my DBIL would say that 50 is cold, being down by the border. Thank, about my DH. Yes, he is progressing nicely. He is even talking about doing some errands with me, maybe tomorrow.
DD1 was feeling so much better yesterday, that her and her DH took a ride to the casino, to play some bingo, but it was all closed due to the weather. I had to laugh, as she asked me if I wanted to go, there was no way I was going out in the snow. They should have waited till today. But what does Mom know, right? She messaged us last night, saying she wants to buy a bike, this spring.
I am loving the quiet in here, since DH is still sleeping. I will let him sleep till around 8:15, then get him up, as he has pills he has to take at 8:30.
Have a nice day everyone, and root for the Packers!!! Fingers crossed!!!

Karen, 6 inches of snow is not bad. Is your DSIL going to clear the snow at DB's house? Definitely a good idea to keep good records. Did the lawyer say anything about waiting to disperse money to beneficiaries? As far as any bills of your DB's you want to pay, sometimes when you call the creditor and tell them the money is tied up for 30 days, or sometimes it is even longer, they will not charge you interest and will just wait. Sometimes they will even write it off, or take less than the amount due, however my guess is your DB didn't have large accumulated bills. Hope all works out with your DH and his physical therapy. Were there any exercises that they sent him home with?
Pinky, I think one of the problems with people driving around in bad weather is that they think if they have a big 4 wheel drive that they can just drive and will get through anything. If it is icy, that doesn't help.
We ended up yesterday with about 2 inches of snow, I think it is the only snow we really had this year, I am not counting the dusting that melted right away. It didn't rain for as long last night as they expected, so not all the snow washed away. I will keep my eye out, and will go clear it around noon if it doesn't melt by then, because the temperature is supposed to drop tonight and I don't want black ice.
We watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody on TV last night, it was so great! We got it from HBO on Demand, so didn't even have to pay to rent it. I have a few things to do today, then will be watching the games, and reading. Hoping to finish my book, The Dearly Beloved.

Good Morning from the frozen tundra. Although it is -11 degrees and very frigid the sun is shining and the wind has quit blowing. The guys are busy clearing snow out of the yard, the cattle yards and trying to get the cattle fed. Makes for a lot of extra work. They already called off church last night just because roads need to be cleared and the extreme cold. Do not want any families stranded by being stuck in a snowbank and then the cold weather.
Karen---We do have a generator but I don't think we were very concerned about power going out on this storm. That usually is only a concern in our area if there is freezing rain and then high winds but it was too cold for rain. Glad your DD is feeling so well as to venture out. Is she able to go back to work right away or does she have to take some time off? Good luck to your Packers today!!!!
Robin---An example happened last night as to why they say no travel on roads and they have pulled the snow plows off the road in the county next to us. An ambulance was called out and the snow plows had to go in front of it to clear the road to get to where they were going. As they were driving they came across vehicles stuck on the road with drifts all around them. They then had to get them pulled out and off the road so that the ambulance could get to the emergency which I am sure wasted some very valuable time in getting patient to the hospital. On Bohemian Rhapsody---glad you enjoyed it, I was glad I saw it but really didn't think it was so great. I don't think I knew in detail about Freddie Mercury's lifestyle and hadn't prepared for it. I thought he and the movie was weird. Totally different than what we are used to in the midwest---of course we have the snow to deal with--LOL!!!!
Most likely a quiet day around here today. I have 2 chapters left of Crawdads and I am sad to have it end---it is one of my top favorite books I have read. On a scale of 1-5 I give it a 10----oh wait can I do that, surely a 5 star for me and would recommend to everyone! It goes poof tomorrow but the chapters are not very long so should actually get it finished by noon today unless I have interruptions.

1Âş when I got this morning. Still windy but not as bad as yesterday though still causing dangerously low windchills. Not making it much above 0Âş today. Finally warms up midweek and then snow chances every day.
Karen, glad DH is doing well. Can't believe your DD is out running around already so soon after surgery. Good though she's doing so well.
Pinky, Crawdads was one of my favorite books too.
I got a lot done yesterday going through my mom's papers and pictures. Hoping to finish today so I can move on to the big tote of my Dad's. A lot more to go through with his. First I want to get a new recipe for chicken and dumplings going in the crockpot. Third day of not being out of the house. Loving it! Wish I could hibernate until Spring! Hate cold weather! I do have to be out in it tomorrow again though to go to work.

The storm is over - we probably got 4” which is far from the 10” they predicted. It’s about 35 degrees and very windy.
Karen, glad to hear DH is coming along and your DD as well! Good news! She must be feeling really good to want to go out for a few hours. That’s good.
Robin, glad to see you didn’t get much snow.
Pinky, Crawdads was one of my top five books for last year. Can’t wait until you come to the end - if you haven’t already.
Gareth, I think I’ll look for a chicken and dumpling recipe myself!
Because of the weather we didn’t go out to dinner for DH’s birthday. We decided to watch The Art of Racing in the Rain. Well, I could have cried through the whole movie! Good movie that ended well, but oh so sad in between. DH chose it too. What a birthday celebration right!? Tonight DS2 and DGF are coming for pizza, cake and ice cream. I love getting together with them. We really like her a lot.
