Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. 10 degrees here this early morning, but going to go up to the 20's, and this week does not look too bad, so I will take it.
2 pages this weekend!!! Way to go ladies!!! Lots of great advice on books, I will have to write it down, for when I am on Overdrive, looking for a book!
Robin, yes, DSIL and my grandson went yesterday and cleared up DB driveway and the 2 little paths to the doors. Since he has a short driveway, it took them no time at all. The lawyer had no say so about the money we all inherited from DB's accounts with Ed Jones. Maybe it is because there is enough in the checking and savings account (?) And yes, you are right, he had barely any debt. Just utilities, and the bills related to his cancer treatment. He was super frugal with his money. We here in Wisco see the same thing, in bad weather, the guys with the big 4x4's out there being idiots. I think we all take some satisfaction to see those big vehicles in the ditches. I had heard after Freddie Mercury passed about his lifestyle, since it didn't affect me, I didn't give it a thought. I don't think I would watch the movie tho. DD had her surgery robotically, so she just has the 4 very small incisions.
Pinky, is a warm up in your forecast at all? We are to go into the low 30's all week, which as you know is a heat wave, considering what we could have. DD will be off work for at least 4 weeks. The way it sounds, she will be itching to get back to it, if she couldn't stay home this weekend! She was excited yesterday, as since the surgery she lost 6#. So since she started this whole adventure, last May she has lost a total of 46#. I would be so happy if I lost that much, but with her, she still has a long way to go.
Gareth, so nice that you had all that time at home, then to be able to dig into a project like that, made it worthwhile. Good luck going back to work, they just said here, that some of the side roads are still slippery. By the way, how was that chicken and dumpling dinner? I think I will google the recipe for that, today sounds like a good day for that, hoping I have the ingredients.
Anngie, glad you did not that 10"!! How was the pizza party? Lol, we had pizza too! Would have loved the cake and ice cream too, but did not have it in the house. That is great, how you feel about your DS girl friend. We are happy with who our daughters married, as a whole, of course everyone has their little quirks, but over all, we are happy with them.
So sad about the Packers, but we are all saying that they did way better than expected this past season. DH truly believes there is something going on with our QB, that maybe it is time to retire, as he did not play well at all. Besides him the team is young, so we have that. 49ers, in my mind are the best team out there, so good for them, to go to the super bowl.
I did not keep watching the game, as I was at the end of The Address, and to me, I would rather read than watch our team play horrible. That was an excellent book, in my opinion.
Have a nice day everyone.

We were at 19 this morning, but the wet snow from yesterday pretty much melted and dried up. Sounds like the surgery your DD had was what I was talking about. They used to say it was done with a laparoscope, but I am sure we are talking about the same thing, they make those little incision, stick something in that has a viewer so they can see with they are doing. So happy that she has lost so much weight. When you see results, it makes a big difference. Glad you enjoyed The Address so much.
We will also get to the low 30's today, and be in the low 30's all week. I am not sure we will break freezing today though. Our office is basically closed, but DH has 2 appointments. I will go in around 11 so am there when the first one shows up. I want to make sure if they come in early someone is there. DH would be working upstairs in his office. Our secretary sits downstairs, where the conference room is.
Yesterday we watched both games, and for dinner had assorted Japanese appetizers, which really hit the spot. DH didn't want to order different things for me and him, so I just ate less. I even had a glass of wine, and was at exactly 30 points, which is the max for me on Green, of course also the minimum for Green, so I usually want to keep below 30. Will probably cook something tonight for dinner.
I finished the book The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall, and after a rough start, I really loved it. The first 70 or so pages was the set up for the story, introducing the 4 main characters and giving you their back stories. 2 young men who become ministers, 2 women, through their lives. Lots going on, it is religious without being religious, they have complex relationships with each other. I don't like to tell too much about a book because it gives away the story, I think everyone should let the book unfold for themselves. Now I am on to The Confession Club, which is the 3rd in the Arthur Truluv books. So far I only remember one overlapping character, but I read very little so far.

Karen, the chicken and dumplings was good though I really didn't care for the dumplings made with canned biscuits. I'll go back to using bisquik which makes fluffy biscuits that I prefer. I know I looked up The Address when Robin talked about it but now I can't remember if I put it in my wish list so I'll have to check it out. I listened to more of Big Lies In a Small Town while I walked this morning. I always enjoy her books.
I finished going through my Mom's pictures and papers yesterday. Found more love letters my Dad had written her. I'm surprised she had kept them all these years through all of her moves but then she saved everything. I wonder if I'll find love letters she wrote my Dad when I go through his stuff. That would really surprise me the way he felt about her after the divorce but then he was another that saved everything.
Back to work again today. Hate the thought of going out in the cold. It's only 7Âş now and won't be warming up much but at least the wind has finally died down.

My kids both got home safely on Friday. Fortunately their plane was half hour early. DS said the drive was not great especially as he got closer to home but he was glad he didn’t leave later. DD had plenty of time to make her 5:30 bus, and good thing because the 2 hour bus ride took 3 hours and I imagine the 7:30 bus ride was even longer.
Karen – why not consult the estate attorney you are working with regarding the credit union law? Glad dd and dh are doing well. What kind of diet restrictions is dd on now?
We loved Bohemian Rhapsody and thought Rami Malek was amazing. There was a video going around for a while, side by side of Freddie Mercury and Rami Malek and he did such a fabulous job.
I think I must be the only person who didn’t love Crawdads.
Robin – I couldn’t figure out why you said your office is basically closed today. It took me a bit to remember it is MLK day.
I am enjoying The Oystervile Sewing Circle, probably 60-70% through. And just a few minutes from being done with Maisie Dobbs on audio. (I listen in the car so I don't have the luxury of letting it run when I get to work).
Not much excitement for the weekend. The snow kept us in most of Saturday. I wanted to make a vegetable curry for dinner and I was preparing to make homemade naan to go with it so dh said lets go to Costco and buy it and that was the extent of us getting out of the house. Yesterday the usual groceries and target. I did some laundry, stripped my bed, and read.

Karen--yes we will be having a bit of a warmup. Six below yet this morning and not so warm today but they are saying 20-30 degrees most of this week. That is pretty nice temps for us for January so I will take that. Western SD could make it to 50 degrees they are saying but that is not unusual for out there as they are normally warmer. With all of our snow it will never warm up that much. Sorry about the Packers loss---at first I thought they were going to get blown out of the water but they at least made some points to close that score gap. Sounds like your DD is doing great---good for her.
Robin--sounds like a quiet day at work today.
Gareth---Wind is down here today also so hopefully it will feel somewhat mild----I keep telling myself that as I need to go outside to our business office after a little while and catch up a few things. Then I will be back inside working on some 1099's and W-2 info.
Have a great day everyone!

Marsha--Glad your DS and DD made it where they needed to be safely. Was it warm in AZ when they were there?

I did not go into the office today, DH said he would go by himself and wait for them in the conference room. He said they know that the office is closed today. I went out to get a few vegetables to make a soba noodle dish for dinner. The Asian markets have certain things for so much less than the others. The peapods there were $2.99, vs $5.99 at the regular market. I also bought some peapods and a few other things.
Pinky, over the weekend DH kept flipping back and forth to the Barrett Jackson auction.
Marsha, Tracey told me about that video, it is posted on Youtube so I watched it. Amazing. I had no idea who Freddie Mercury was until this movie came out. I a way, similar to seeing the show Beautiful, about Carol King, or even Jersey Boys. Of course I knew who Carol King was, and the Four Seasons, but did not know their story. It happens with these things a lot. I am sure if we watch Rocketman we will learn a lot too.
I liked The Oysterville Sewing Circle. A lot more to it than your normal run of the mill romance novel, that's for sure.

I watched Rocketman on the plane on one of my trips to AZ. I liked it but it wasn't as good as Bohemian Rhapsody. The music was good. Same with the movie Yesterday - good music, fair movie. Both good for airplane watching.

It is cool here, only 50 so not too bad. It is supposed to be like this until Wednesday night when rain is predicted. Again, just rain not ice or snow.
I don't know when MLK day was made a national holiday. DH gets today off (well, he was supposed to, but had to go in), but not President's Day in February. I don't understand that.
I hate, hate, hate driving in ice. People just don't slow down or watch the news apparently. A few years one Dallas station showed about 10 minutes of cars sliding because people insisted on driving fast on overpasses. They would slam on their brakes and then slid into medians or other cars.
I keep meaning to put Where the Crawdads Sing on hold because I never find it in. I read The Confession Club. I give it a 3. I didn't realize it was trilogy until I read Amazon reviews. After saying I wasn't going to read anymore cozy mysteries, I am read a cozy mystery, Deader Homes and Gardens by Joan Hess. My main reason is because the author is from Arkansas and writes about places in the state that I am familiar with. This is a series about a woman who owns a bookstore and solves murders. The author died a couple of years ago and this is the only one I hadn't read so I decided I could get through one last unrealistic mystery.
I watched the national news and saw all about the blizzard and other bad weather up north. I hope everyone is safe and warm.

Boy, is it cold out - maybe 10 degrees and breezy. Although cold, it will at least be a sunny week.
Karen, The Address sounds like one for my list. I’m almost done with The Alice Network. I’m interested, too, in what kind of limitations DD will have after surgery. I’m glad she lost another 6lbs. because losing anything at all makes one feel they’re on the right track. As far as the losing goes, what time frame is she hoping for?
Carol, you’re right, no one knows how to drive on icy roads. Even here, people forget from one winter to the next! You wouldn’t believe how many fender-benders there are after the first snow fall of the season! Amazing.
Robin, Dearly Beloved looks like one I would like. I forgot all about the Arthur Trulove series. I believe I read #2 but forgot #3 was out.
Marsha, glad to hear everyone made it there and back without an issue. How is DD feeling?
Pinky, oh no! Tax time is right around the corner! A necessary evil, I guess!
Gareth, will you be sending all these keepsakes on to your sister after you go through them? I forgot - do you have other siblings? Was the chicken/dumpling recipe from WW’s?
Do any of you make a list of books you have read? I just read an article where it’s suggested for us “older” readers to keep track. It also mentioned that if one is in a reading “slump”, then re-read an old favorite instead of something new.

Anngie, The Confession Club is the Truluv #3, I am enjoying it so far. If you liked the others, you should like this.
Carol, Crawdads has been on the NY Times Best Seller list for a long time, so I would imagine it won't happen for a while that you will just walk in and see it.

My mom always used Bisquick for her dumplings so that's what I usually use. I don't make them very often. We like the ones you can get at Cracker Barrel. Several years ago, I found a recipe using flour tortillas as dumplings. That didn't work out at all for me.
I bought a blank journal and use that to list the books I've read. I think I started doing that in 2003. I have looked through the journals before and can't remember at all what the book was about. I'll look it up on Amazon or Good Reads and most of the time, it'll ring a bell. Sometimes I put if it is fiction or non-fiction by the title, too. I have read several series especially of mysteries. I keep a list of the series on Evernote on my phone. I reread books some. Pride and Prejudice and To Kill A Mockingbird are 2 of my favorites. When I worked in the school library, I reread quite a few I remembered from when I was in school. I also read new ones so I would have something to recommend if kids asked.

I keep a list on Pinterest of my books for each year. I started doing that in 2015. I don't put on the books I read at night, which are the romances. Once in a while if a romance is good enough I will put it on my regular list, like The Oysterville Sewing Circle. Sometimes I do have to look back to remind myself what it was about. I generally remember the non-fiction ones, because there are not as many of them.
I cannot say my DM ever made dumplings. My DMIL made something like spaetzle, but it was rolled instead of put through a spaetzle maker. But not the traditional type of dumplings.
My DS & DDIL finally put a pic on Facebook showing her being pregnant.
