Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Another chilly start, my weather bug says it is 6, with a feel like temp of -4. Looks like we get to the low 20's today.
Robin, yes my DD is very happy so far with the surgery. I think the hardest part for her right now is the diet she is on, sounds like just soup, and she is of course wanting normal food. That's nice that you did not have to go to your office after all. About the list, that is a good idea. I can see on my kindle the list of books that I have read, but I don't think that includes the ones from Bookbub. My mother used to make dumplings, they were very good, but I never got into making them.
Gareth, I think I would drop dead if I found love letters from my Dad to my Mom. He just wasn't that way, even tho they were together till the day my Mom died. Plus he went into a depression after that. He had a rough childhood, so with that said, I could not see him writing letters to my Mom. Lol, I think I am now done with winter!! Of course if we look at it from the calendar, we really don't have a long wait, for spring. But to get thru Feb is going to be tough. Yesterday and today we have sunny skies at least.
Marsha, good to hear about your kids. I hope they had a good time with your Mom. We do have an attorney, for my DB will and estate. I had called him just as he was leaving on vacation, and he said he did not think the C.U. could do that, but if they insisted, then I had to abide by their rule. So after a lot of back and forth, I gave up. I have the appointment made for Feb. 17th to get that all transferred. It will be here before we know it. As far as I know, DD diet is very restrictive right now. Not much more than water, soups, yogurt. I don't think there is anything else she can have. She texted me the other day that she was craving a cheeseburger. Oh well. But she also said yesterday that she has now lost 11# since the surgery.
Pinky, same here, cold this morning but by tomorrow warming up. They did say something about some kind of weather coming this weekend, but I missed what it is. Thank you, about the Packers. Have to say that the 49ers are the best team in the NFL right now. Packers really did luck out this past season. Lol, speaking of working on your taxes, I got an email from Turbo tax, as that is how I do our taxes, telling me that the W2 is in from the store I worked at, and that confused me as I quit there on December 28th of 18, so I did not expect one from them, then I remembered I did get a check the first week of January last year. At least our taxes this year will be the easiest that I have ever done. DB taxes, I will take to the guy he had doing his for the last few years, so that will be easy also.
Carol, I read that MLK day became a Holiday in 1985. I will not drive on ice, if we know it is out there. Up here they are pretty good with pre treating the roads, if they know something is coming, and then treating the roads after. The only bad thing is, if we get an ice storm then the temp goes very low, like 0 or below, then the treatment they use will not work. That blizzard and storm they were showing on the national news was not that bad here. We just got aprox 6", and for awhile after it was a bit windy, but nothing like they showed on the news, thank heavens.
Anngie, I think you will like The Address, hope you can get it without waiting for a hold. I think the limitations for DD are the same as a normal surgery, weight restrictions of 10 pounds, and no driving till she is off pain meds. I know she said she is off work for 4 weeks. She asked if I could take her to her doctor apt Thursday, but it conflicts with my taking DH to his dentist apt. So her DH will have to take off work to take her. Do you have a list of books you have read?
Our TV has been looked at by 2 repair guys from our cable company, last week, with still no results, so DH called them yesterday. A guy came out, and was here all afternoon, finally left at 5pm, with the living room TV not working, the TV in DH bedroom working, so that helped DH last night. They are coming back today. I am amazed at what he said is the issue, something about when this building was built, management had Spectrum come in and do the wiring, so any other cable company would have a heck of a time wiring for that company. We have had cable since we moved here, in November of 18, and it worked for awhile, then it started with that screen freezing issue. So I really can't say what is going on, but I just wish they would get it figured out. I like watching the morning news, as I am on my laptop.
Need to do grocery shopping today, then we will run and check on DB house, and mail. I try to go over there every other day, but with the snow last weekend and then no mail yesterday, I haven't been there since Friday. DD and her family were there on Sunday to remove the snow, so they checked the house while they were there, then. I am really looking forward to selling that house!
Talking about books on hold, I looked at all of my holds last night, and there is one that I put on hold last July!!! Geez. All the others were put on hold in November.
Have a nice day everyone.

We are at 6 degrees this morning and should reach 20 today but the wind is really blowing again so makes it seem quite cold. Tomorrow they have us at 33 degrees, my goodness that is a heatwave for us.
Robin---we have been watching the Barrett Jackson auction on tv as well and DH and I both commented that we missed going to it this year.
Karen--I am so jealous of you having easy taxes to file. Taxes for farmers are very intense and so much to it. Of course when we have our crop insurance and seed business included plus DH enjoys investments so it gets very detailed. All the machinery and equipment plus breeding cattle (Cows and Bulls) are considered on a depreciation schedule. I do not mind the bookwork part of it all but I hate figuring out the depreciation and the deep stuff so that is when DH comes in. We make a good team he hates the bookwork but has the smarts for the deep stuff. I actually enjoy the tax prep of getting the 1099's, W-2s and the Form 943(wages and witholding etc) all filled out and sent off, but from there I print off all the reports required that I have entered info into Quickbooks and hand them over to DH. I then sometimes need to answer to him or our tax preparer/lawyer why I have something where I do, from there DH and lawyer go over different scenario's with depreciation factors and they decide what fits best for us. Then we have to write the big check to the IRS and kiss that money goodbye. You have to remember that is how we pay our social security, medicare etc. as we do not get payroll checks that have it already taken out. So hopefully some of that money is waiting for us down the road---LOL! Crazy about your tv situation--hope they figure it out today.
I need to get busy with something, some laundry and office work---so HI to all of you!

I have nothing to read. I finished The Oysterville Sewing Circle (which I liked. Romance, but not mostly romance so it was fine). and I finished listening to Maisie Dobbs (which I liked much better once I turned up the speed on the replay). I downloaded Homegoing audio but so far it's not grabbing me. My holds don't look like they are about to come in. Maybe it's a sign I should take a break from reading and do some chores LOL.
Robin - matzo balls are as close to dumplings as I've ever gotten.
RE keeping track of what I've read - I used to keep a "books read" and "books to read" list on my phone but it got away from me. I should go back and look at the books to read list and see what I may have missed. I read exclusively on kindle so that helps for books read but it also has titles I never finished. And sometimes I do audio books. Sometimes when I'm browsing possible books I can't remember if I read them, started them, or just read the description.
Karen - I can't imagine being on such a restrictive diet and I can absolutely see why dd has lost so much weight already. How much did she end up taking off in order to have the surgery? Are your neighbors having trouble with their tv's too? We had similar trouble at one time and I think rabbits had chewed on the cables outside. You could probably have db's mail forwarded to your house.
I just checked out the Address (by Fiona Davis - is that right?) but turns out it's an ebook, not kindle, so I think I'll have to read it on my Ipad.
I take all of my tax stuff to the accountant and let him do it. Ours probably aren't complicated but that's why he went to school so he in theory should know more than me.
We went to a MLK program last night. It was very good. It's an annual event put on by an interfaith organization made up of spiritual leaders from many different churches/religious institutions in town. Our Rabbi Emeritus is active in it. They do a thanksgiving program and a MLK program every year and take turns hosting. This time it was at a church very close to us. I thought the program was good - speakers were a Catholic Priest who spoke about recognizing and being careful of white privilege, our Rabbi who spoke about rising anti Semitism, and a man who spoke about being fearful as a black man in our community (I don't think he is a spiritual leader but he is a prominent individual who has spoken at these things before). I was disturbed by the makeup of the audience - almost all white - and I would have felt like the program was more meaningful if it had been a more diverse crowd. Felt very segretated to me. I know that was not the intent but I wonder why that was - why did the ethnic community not show up?

Busy morning with laundry etc around here. Time for a break now. My later shift to work today. -9Âş this morning. Now it warms up tomorrow but the problem with that is that it brings snow into the forecast for the next three days. At least no storms mentioned and doesn't sound like a lot of snow so far anyway.
Karen, I was going to say the same thing that Marsha said about having the mail forwarded. Hope your TV situation is resolved today finally.
Marsha, I'm sure like here there were so many events for MLK day that's probably why your event wasn't better attended by a more diverse crowd.
Pinky, hate to even think how complicated your taxes must be. I love bundling everything together and passing it off to our accountant friend to deal with our taxes so I don't have to.
Robin, I know you've said but forget when baby is due.
Anngie, it's just my sister and me. Next time I see her I'll pass on the box of things I've saved for her. The chicken and dumplings recipe was one I saw online that was WW friendly. I liked everything about it except for the canned biscuit dumplings so next time I'll use the same recipe subbing the bisquik dumplings instead.
Carol, I'd love your 50Âş temps!

It is only 43 right now and overcast. By the weekend, it should be back in the mid-50s. We are going to DD's on Saturday to play with DGS and let DD and DSIL go out if they want.
We had MIL's mail forwarded to us and then we started getting scam phone calls for her. Sometimes they would ask to speak to her and I would ask if they knew her and of course, they said they never had the pleasure. I was nice and said she had passed away. Later, I was tired of it so I would say "she's dead so don't call again." I guess I was blunt enough because the calls stopped. We continued to get mail for her, too, of course. I would mark through her name and write "deceased" on it and stuff everything in the return envelope and mail it. I kept a list of who I had done that to and it usually took at least 2 times before she was dropped from the list.
The letters FIL wrote to MIL were not mushy, love letters. He was sent to Europe during the latter part WW2 and he would write about what he was doing. There was one that was real sweet about her being pregnant and keeping it a secret for a few more weeks. We were surprised because it seemed so out of character for him. I would be really shocked if he had kept her letters to him. We came across a couple, I think. I would have been shocked to find love letters to my dad from my mom. It is hard to picture her writing down something that personal. That's just how she was.
Marsha, was the MLK program opened to the public and did it cost anything? DH went to an annual MLK breakfast. Businesses and organizations buy a certain number of seats or a whole table. He said it was pretty well mixed.
I also have a books to read list in a little notebook that I carry around. I think I have a list in Evernote, too. Hmmm, I need to check to see if I still have that.
Karen, irritating about your TV. Ours was messing up once and it was because of squirrels. There are thousands around here. When DH worked for the city, one woman called and told him it should be legal to shoot squirrels in town. He had visions of young kids with their BB guns playing Rambo with the squirrels.

Carol - no charge for the MLK event and as far as I know open to all. Nobody asked who we were when we arrived. I think it was probably publicized through the interfaith clergy organization to their communities but their organization clergy leading most or all of the ethnicities that live here.
I downloaded Sold on a Monday. Not sure yet what the details of the story are. I'll keepyou posted.

Too much going on today to read everyone's posts, but wanted you to know I am still alive. DS is on vacation, lots going on.
Karen, I thought that when people get the lap band surgery their diet has to totally change, but not sure if that is long term. Sorry that your Packers lost. I know how disappointing that can be.
DDIL's due date is April 23rd.

Karen, I sure hope your TV troubles have ended by now! It’s so annoying to want to sit down and watch something but you can’t. I’m glad you’ve started now so by Feb. 2 it should be working!
Carol what is Evernote?
Pinky, I wouldn’t even know where to begin to file your taxes! God bless you and DH!
Marsha, it’s really a shame when something is organized and then poorly attended. It’s always how it is, though. And then the very same people are often heard saying “there’s nothing to do”.
Gareth, I agree, I would rather make “drop biscuits” from Bisquick than the ones you mentioned. It sounds so good especially for this cold weather.
To answer someone’s question, I’ve made a list of the historical fictions books I’ve read but haven’t really kept track of all the random ones. I think I’ll start. However all those I’ve read through Overdrive are listed in my history. I’ve made a number of recommendations on Overdrive but only 3-4 have been purchased by them. I now use that list as a reminder of books I’d like to read.

The mention of rabbits or squirrels gnawing at the cable cords outside reminded me we had trouble with our tv some years back and I guess it boiled down to I had gotten to close to a wire/cable when I was trimming by the house with the trimmer and put a couple of cuts on the cord. Then when the moisture got in it gave us problems. Hope they have found the problem by now.
Has anyone heard read or mentioned The Wives by Tarryn French? I had heard of it and went to put it on hold---both ebook or audio is about a 6 month wait. I did put my name on the list, we will see how long it actually takes. I am liking Winter in Paradise so far.

Anngie - perhaps I misspoke. There were a lot of people at the MLK program. The church was nearly full. But they were almost all white, and I wished there was a more diverse crowd. It would have felt more MLK like if many ethnicities were together recognizing his accomplishments and looking at where we still have to go.

Karen, I think that if a bookbub book is downloaded by going through Amazon, it will be on your kindle, because even when it is free, you are "buying" it for $0.00.
Marsha, that program sounds interesting. I agree with you that the audience should be more diverse. Our section of Long Island is not diverse at all as far as black/white, but there are many Asians now (Indian & Pakistani included as Asian). When it comes to certain things, we also get a more white audience.
If I want to check on books that I have read, I go into Manage my Contents and Devices on Amazon. Even books that are borrowed from the library are listed there. I can sort by title and author, so it is helpful.
Carol, enjoy taking care of your DGS. A double treat, taking care of him and letting them go out an enjoy themselves.
Karen, I hope they figure out the cable, unusual that your DH's TV is OK. Is there a cable box for each TV? Maybe it's a faulty box. I would think it would be cheaper to give you a new box than it is to keep sending repairmen.
