Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. 16 here this morning, just going up to the 20's. Snow showers possible, with the measurable snow coming Sunday.
Marsha, Before we had Trump as President, I had assumed people in higher office was schooled in the constitution, and civics. Also what should be a required course, is world politics. Have to say I am with everyone else, with the eye doctor complaint. When they do that thing with the glass in front of you, switching back and forth and you have to pick which one is the best, I think they are all the same! How did that go, with the eye doctor? (With the history going on)
Anngie, sorry you got that snow, and freezing drizzle. They are warning us here to get ready to have to shovel Sunday, as we have not had snow for a couple weeks now. That was nice! Yes, I had heard that Pelosi "slighted" the President by the way she introduced him. Those 2 are like oil and water. Will anything have to be done once you get the crown on the 13th?
Pinky, if I stay at 2 or less glasses of wine, I am not affected by it to sleep, but if I have 3 or heaven forbid more than that, I have a hard time sleeping. That is the weird thing about wine, as if you would drink 3 bottles of beer, you would have no issue sleeping!! That must have been SO MUCH FUN, taking all the ladies around the house, touring it!!! Our Realtor came here yesterday, for us to talk and all, and he was surprised when he came up the stairs, how big and nice it is. So of course DH had to take him on the nickel tour, lol.
Gareth, thanks for reminding me! I have my mammo and bone scan coming up on the 24th. I have seen that over the years, tech's that work on you for some test, and sure enough they are coughing up a lung!!! How rude!!! I know they are short handed BUT STILL!!! There are a few schools around here closing for a few days, to get the schools cleaned because of all the different germs, and so many of the school population are out sick. Are you going to get the snow on Sunday that we are going to get? I heard maybe 4".
Carol, I know what your talking about, with IL house and not staying there. I would not be able to sleep in my DB house, no way!!! Lol, I said the same thing, about when getting eyes checked. And, they do it so fast!!! What's up with that!?! I always have to have a book going too. It is like someone watching their favorite TV show, all of us book readers have to have a book to read.
Ok, as I expected, the news was not the greatest for DB house. Our Realtor said that banks would not give out conventional loans for such a house. It would be for investors. And the most important thing would be if the house, which does not have a basement, if it has footings or some kind of slab on it. I know I am not explaining it correctly, but what it boils down to, if it does not have that, whoever wants to redo it, would have a tough time flipping it, and also, since there is a large back yard, it makes sense to want to build it out, for at least a 2 bedroom instead of a 1, which do not sell well. So with that being said (and a whole lot more!), the list price would, in order to sell it, would be only $40,000. (My brother was hoping for around $60,000). It has to do with how much $$$ the investor/flipper would have to stick into it, in order to make some kind of profit out of it. I had figured, way back when we first started going in there, that we would just get the price of the land out of it, and sure enough that is it. Last night our Realtor called us, proposing that he and his brother (we know both of them personally, as his brother is the one who fixed our house after all those trees fell on it from the storm), would buy it from us, to flip it, and then we would not have to pay the fee he charges as a Realtor, we would just pay closing costs. In the meantime, him and his brother would take over all maintenance of the property, such as snow shoveling, etc. I told DH afterwards I do not want them doing that, that we will take care of that, till the sale. We are taking the weekend to think this over, and of course talking to my sibs about it, to see how they feel about it. We did find out that there is a gas leak in the kitchen, (that was the smell!!!) so DH and DBIL are going over there tomorrow morning to fix that. Then with that horrible smell gone, I can go in there and do more of what needs to be done, such as looking into the last few cupboards in the kitchen, to see if there is anything salvageable. Otherwise the guys will take care of everything. I am so sad to think that is all my DB would be getting out of his house, after living there all those years. But he let it go to pot, so there it is.
I must mention, last Friday was our official weigh in day, as DH needs to loose weight too, and I was up 2 pounds, so today I lost those 2 pounds. Whew!!! I was so mad at myself last week, and was determined to loose at least 1 of those pounds, this week. So yay, onward!!!!
Have a nice day everyone.

Karen, I am not surprised at all what you are saying about your DB's house. However, I think you should call in another realtor from that area, just to see what they have to say. I know you trust your realtor, but then saying that it is worth so little and saying he and his brother will buy it from you, makes me wonder whether you should get a second opinion. You have no obligation to the other realtor, these guys do this all the time. Some people interview more than 2.
It is rainy here again today, but 43 degrees. It was misting while I walked the dog, but a few minutes ago I heard real rain. I see in the 10 day forecast there are a few days where it will be rain mixed with snow showers, but so far when they have said that it hasn't snowed. We get a few days of dry weather, then a day or so of rain/snow showers. The only days they predict it to go below freezing are dry days.
I lost another 1/2 lb this morning, which is my official weigh in. That is pretty good considering last night at mah jongg I had some cheez-its and baked chips, both of which are salty. The only other thing I ate were some veggies with a feta cucumber dip, and cantaloupe. Salty is usually something that will make me be up a pound or 2. I was the big winner at mah jongg, too long an explanation on how that happened, but must hands are 25 cent hands, a few are 30, so a normal win is between $1 and $1.50, depending on whether you pick your own mah jongg time, or call it from someone else. The first hand was a made up hand we do, and I won $4. And, I won 2 other hands, and we play 8 or 9 for the night at most. When we have 5 of us, so one rotating out, we end up playing fewer hands, I guess more talking, so we play 6.
The DH of one of my friends who came over last night has a tumor that is at the top of his spine, behind his sinuses and his pituitary gland, that he has to have removed next Saturday. I knew about it because he called the office yesterday as I was leaving, asking for DH who was on the phone, I saw the secretary write down his name, and I picked up the phone to talk. We had drafted wills for them almost 2 years ago, and they never came in to sign once they got the drafts. I let DS talk to him because I knew he had drafted the wills. They will come in next week I guess to sign, or we will go to them. I have to talk to DS when I get in this morning.

Karen - it's good to know you were right about db's house. Good to discuss it with your sibs but do you think it would be a good idea to get another real estate agent in for a second opinion? Especially since your friend has found a way to make a profit off of this.... His offer may be your best bet and it would certainly take the stress off of you. But another opinion might help you be comfortable with the decision. Oh I see Robin had the same thought.
Robin - good job at weigh in and at mah jongg. I love cheeze its. For a long time it was a trigger food and I couldn't keep it in the house. Now we don't buy them unless dd is home but I am ok around them. So sorry about your friend. What do they say about that kind of surgery?
I am still journaling and staying under 30 points but I'm a bit frustrated that the scale is going nowhere. Tomorrow is official weigh in day but based on today there is no loss this week. Again. I am journaling honestly so I am mystified. If I were cheating at least I could point to a reason. I know I haven't been exercising but I also know this is mostly about what you eat and that exercise is about health but not weight loss, at least if you are not exercising heavily like training for a marathon. I've been doing this long enough to know that. So I will see what tomorrow says but I am not optimistic.
I'm giving up on Ready Player One (audio). I may go back to the audio I was listening to before I started Ready Player One of perhaps I'll look for something else. Just barely into The Dutch House.
No plans this weekend. I may start organizing taxes. it would be nice to get them to the accountant early this year rather than so late that he files an extension. And some cleaning since next weekend I'll be gone (leaving for AZ a week from tomorrow). My mother wants to go look at an assisted living. Her failing (failed?) eyesight is weighing on her and she is struggling to do some things on her own like prepare meals.

Good Morning----We received an inch of snow during the night and few flakes falling from the sky yet. I guess the roads are terrible due to it being about 28 degrees when it feel so the road was warm enough to melt somewhat but cooling off enough for it to freeze and then a light wind blowing the new snow across the road and it stuck. I guess we are in for a significant snowfall Saturday night into Sunday as 4-8 inches and they are putting us in a winter weather advisory. Glad we are getting out of here next week.
Karen--I agree with Robin that a second opinion wouldn't hurt anything. I am sure you trust your friend the realtor but seems it just wouldn't hurt to doublecheck with him offering to buy it. That way you know for sure. WTG on getting those 2 lbs back off.
Robin--Good for you on the Mah Jongg win, even those a lot of money is not involved just fun to be the winner. Sorry to hear about your friends DH--sounds scary.
A young man who worked for us from when he was probably 12 years old until he graduated from college is having a mass removed from his brain this morning. A couple of weeks ago he had a seizure and was taken to the hospital where they found this mass the size of a baseball. They are not sure but expect it to be benign. He has had no symptoms of anything until this seizure and believe this mass could have been there for 15 years. They had to let his brain rest a bit from the seizure before they go in and yesterday they went in and embolized the blood flow to the mass so as less chance of bleeding.

My usual morning day off routine. Time now for a break before heading into my office to take care of a few things. Finished A Friend Of The Family while I walked. Not your typical Lisa Jewell. I liked it but not as much as her others. Now I've started A Fire Sparkling that grabbed me right away. Nice when that happens though there's lots of books that don't right away that I'm glad I stuck out. Others I've stuck out and after I finished them wondered why.
Karen, yup snow here too Sunday. It's very lightly snowing here now but not supposed to amount to anything. I agree too about getting a second opinion on DB"s house. Wasn't your realtor the one that got you your apartment? Surprised he hadn't seen it. Yay on your loss!
Robin, yay on your loss too! Hope surgery goes well for your friend's DH.
Marsha, frustrating when the scale isn't moving. Are your clothes feeling looser? Sometimes just takes awhile for the scale to catch up.
Pinky, you're in for more snow than us. Don't feel like you need to share though! Hope surgery is going well for that young man. Scary that he's been living with that and didn't even know it.
Anngie and Carol, how's your weather? Get anymore snow?

Well, we’re in for it now! It simply poured all morning, the temps dropped and now it’s snowing so hard I can barely see the house across the street. We could get up to 8”. I’m so over this!
Karen, congrats on the 2# loss! I’m in agreement with the others about getting a second opinion. It doesn’t cost you anything to get another estimate. It would be convenient to accept his offer, though, but we know chances are it will be low. On the flip side, considering the realtor fees of the next guy, it could be a wash. To do nothing means to continue heating the place and pay taxes! Oh my!
Robin, congrats on the loss! So sorry to hear about your friend’s husband. Do you suppose the reason to hurry in and sign the will is an indication it’s not looking good? I don’t know why people hire a lawyer, have a will made and then don’t sign it! Is it because they don’t have pay for it until it’s signed?!
Marsha, don’t give up! It’s so good that your DM realizes she needs different living arrangements now. It’s so much more difficult for everyone when they think they’re doing just fine! I agree about weight loss and excercise! When I’ve lost weight it has never been because I’ve upped my excercising!
Pinky, I feel so sorry for that young man! Surgeons can do amazing things now, though, can’t they. Keep us posted!
Gareth, as you read above, it’s coming down!! And to make it worse, it’s supposed to get very windy later today.
I finished AJ Fikry last night. I really liked it but didn’t expect such a sad ending.

It's 52 degrees here and sunny. Tomorrow and Sunday are supposed to be in the 60s, then cooler temperatures through the week. This seems to be our routine weather lately, cold and then warmer on weekends. No complaints.
Karen, I agree with Robin. Get a second opinion. It can't hurt. With ILs house, we went in thinking we would have it auctioned off. We met with a couple of more flippers and one made a offer. It was lower than I expected, but DH, his DS and DBIL thought it was good so we took it. Part of the reason they went ahead and took it was because no one lived close. This sister and her DH live in California and the other sister is in Connecticut. We were the closet and it was about a 7 hour drive. DH would go up periodically to see his mom at the nursing home. If the house hadn't sold, he would have to be checking on it so it worked out good. Mostly, we just wanted to be rid of it. The gas leak in your DB's kitchen sounds scary.
Sounds like everyone is doing good on whichever WW plan you're on.
