How do you figure how many points and free foods/calories you can have before you don't lose or start gaining? When do you decide to adjust the amount you are eating?

I follow WW (Weight Watchers). This all started when I started to lose weight and ate to fit into my given points. When PointsPlus came out I carried over what I was eating and tracked it and that gave me my points for PP. When I got to Smart Points I jumped around some because I was slowly gaining weight. Freestyle wasn't comfortable for me so I did calorie counting instead. Now I'm on WW Green plan and am eating mostly all my points. I adjust points depending on what the scale is doing. If I'm gaining I cut back on my food, if I'm maintaining I keep the amount of food the same.

In 1984 I did the exchange plan and figured out how many extra calories I could eat...increased or decreased depending on the scale In 1998/9 I counted original points and found at the end I could eat about 29 point per day and not gain
Now...hmm...

I lost my weight using WW at first. I loved the Core and Points Plus. When the switched to freestyle I switched to MFP. MFP didn't help me lose but I was at least able to maintain. Now I'm using WW Blue. So far it's working but I think that's because I realized that I wasn't tracking truthfully on Freestyle. Since I committed to doing that I've been making adjustments based on how many points I have left. I do not eat my activity points and very seldom allow myself to eat my weeklies. I'm afraid that I will start gaining although the leaders say that "That's what they're there for!"
When I see the scale going up , even though I have been staying on program, I cut back.

I use PP because for me it works, and it gets me eating more fruit, which I didn't do when I was on my first real WW Plan, I think it might have been Flex or Momentum, I cant remember. Anyway, I use the "Wendie" approach to PP, which gives me a specific amount of PP points to use each day, sometimes pulling from my WPs. Twice a week I have only my DPs. Then other days I have between 1 - 20 WPs to add to my DPs. I always have my high 15-20Wps extra day on Friday's because we go out to eat Friday nights or Saturday (I'll swap Fri & Sat if we're going out Sat instead). For the most part this works for me. I don't know what number of PP points I need to maintain on, because I've never gotten to that point.

Trial and error. I haven't done actual WW since 2008, I think. Strictly a calorie counter now. I can maintain nicely if I average 1800 or under 5 days a week with a couple of days that stray into the 2000s. I have a fairly efficient metabolism, thank goodness.

I am doing the green plan on WW which gives me 30 daily points plus an additional 6 points for maintenance.I think the most I use a day has been 33.I am still trying to gain just a few lbs before surgery.I like that so far is coming back on slowly.
I started on PP and lost quite a bit and I made goal on SP Beyond the Scale.I was not fond of freestyle I guess because I never lost much on it and I like being accountable for all foods except fruits and nonstarchy veggies.
