Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. 7 degrees here, going to go up to the 20's. Some frigid temps are coming, by Thursday the high will be 8!!! Is January finally coming?
****I see I am fabled!!!! What are you all? (They have changed our member nickname, that is under our picture)
Robin, that is a very neat idea, what your newspaper is doing. I hate to say, I remember that snow storm from 1978! Of course it was here first, and it was epic. Lol!! If DH and I went to a dinner party with a total of 8 people, there is no way I could describe it as quiet!!! I come from a loud family, so naturally I am loud, DH has gotten loud over the years (I wonder why?!), and our family is loud. Even some of our friends are loud. Glad you had a good time, and the food was great.
Gareth, I am so jealous of you, getting that little amount of snow! Oh my, your total of steps hit me in the face! I really need to get back in the habit of going to the Y. A nice thing happened last week, as DH and I stopped in at the Y, to sign him up, we figured he would be paying the registration fee, and then get the senior citizen monthly charge. Come to find out that his supplement now has added that as a benefit, so it is all free! Now to get him to go with me!!! (Of course I have to get back there also!)
Officially they are saying we in GB area received 5.8" of snow. Some areas close to the city had more. I think that here in our burb it was about 6"-7". As I mentioned earlier, I am afraid we now have our January.
So, both of my siblings are all for the sale....whew, glad that step is over. We will be talking with our Realtor sometime today. Have to make sure they are going to blow out DB driveway, since I told DD2 that they did not have to go over there anymore to shovel/snowblow. Now I can comfortably go over to DB, to really look through the house, to make sure we don't miss anything, since DH and his DB fixed that gas leak saturday. We may go over there tomorrow. Just need to go to Walmart this afternoon.
Am reading Before and Again by Barbara Delinsky. Pretty good.
Hi to all who return here today, hope your weekends were fun!

Karen, I didn't notice that about it saying "fabled", but will look now. Glad you all agreed on the house. After everything you said about it, it makes sense. I guess you will know more about timing after you get back to them today. That will be a real load off your mind. Here I always feel that February has more snow than January, not sure why. However this year it looks like we may get nothing other than rain all month.
The dinner party wasn't totally quiet, but just a lot quieter than when we have 12 of us, or a bigger group. My DH is definitely not quiet. Sometimes I wish I could put duct tape on his mouth. He sometimes doesn't let others get a word in.
It looks like we will have rain at least the next 2 days, plus some more during the week also. We will dip down into the teens overnight for the weekend, but otherwise the next 2 weeks will be in the 40's and 50's. Yesterday I tried to put a book on hold, but it seems like my library card expired. I have to call them this morning to renew it. There is a new Raeanne Thayne book that is coming out next month and I want to put it on hold. She is one of the mindless romance authors who has very clean books, for those who might want clean romance. I don't have that much left of The Court Dancer, so will finish in the next few days, but I renewed it anyway.
I made a good and easy dinner last night, although I didn't grow up eating pork, a pork tenderloin is such an easy thing to make. I use our sous vide cooker, I had a Caribbean jerk marinade that I put it in, and we sear it when it comes out. Sous Vide is a method of cooking where you vacuum seal whatever you are making, and put it in a water bath at a certain temperature. Everything comes out very tender, and never dried out. I made mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts with it. The package had 2 tenderloins, so I put a Sesame marinade over the 2nd one, vacuum sealed it, and put it in the freezer for another time. If I have enough time, I can take it right from the freezer into the water bath. I just takes longer until it is done.

Just finished my walk and have a little time before breakfast and getting ready for work. In a couple of weeks I'll be going back to work on Mondays too since a new workshop is starting late afternoon. The coach is one of my favorites to work with otherwise I'd have turned it down when asked.
Karen, 8Âş here and only in the 20's today but at least it'll be sunny. It did snow again here yesterday morning and really came down for awhile. Luckily it was short lived so didn't amount to much. North of us I heard they had 8"+ I'm so ready for winter to be over. I always really look forward to Spring since that's my favorite season. I love seeing the trees budding and flowers starting to bloom. The air is always so fresh and clean especially when you can open windows and get fresh air in the house.

Robin, you came in right ahead of me. I see I'm fabled too but you're Mythical whatever that means probably really nothing. Funny but I'd never heard of sous vide cooking until just a few days ago. I'll have to ask my DS about it.

I see I have been missing in action over the weekend---a busy Saturday and then yesterday we were buried under the snow---UUUGGGHHHH!!! We had 12 inches for sure if not more, so the snow piles are growing like crazy. The farmers are already getting down on springs work with the wet year we had last year that didn't really ever dry up and know so much snow that will be melting. The wind blew in the night with the snow but by morning the snow had quit falling and the wind went down by 10 yesterday morning. They cancelled church again yesterday as people would not have had time to clear the snow to get out yet. This is the 4th time this winter season church has been cancelled which is highly unusual. I would say once a winter season is average but this year the storms have all come on Saturdays and Sundays so kind of crazy.
Friday night DGD age 7 spent the night with us and then we got up early and headed up to watch DGS play basketball and she went with us. After the game we ate with DD's family and some of DSIL's family was there too so a large group. Came home for a short time and headed out again as we gathered with my sisters and DBIL's to celebrate DBIL birthday with dinner and then cake after at one of sisters home. Once DS#1 got here yesterday morning to do chores and help clean snow I had their 3 kids as DDIL had been gone for the weekend with friends for a scrapbooking weekend. Sh was quite delayed getting home too because of the roads and such. Since DS#2 had been gone for the weekend it took DH and DS#1 quite awhile to do chores and clear snow with just the 2 of them and then by the time they got their yards done as well. They finished up by 3 so DH and I went to Sioux Falls to see the young man (who has a very special place in our hearts) that had worked for us and I had mentioned the surgery he had to remove the brain mass. He is doing good for what he has gone through. They did get most of the mass except for a small margin that had attached to some sinus area and they did not dare mess with that area. For now they will be watching and doing MRI's often to watch for growth again. I just pray all goes well---pretty scary.
Another sad note over the weekend was that DS#2 learned a friend of his was skiing out in the Black Hills and had a skiing accident and died. Not sure of the details yet but very sad. This is a friend DS has had a couple of years as he was from a ways away and came to college in Brookings--SDSU. This young man started working for another of DS's lifelong friends dad. He started playing softball and basketball with our DS and his friends. Such a tragedy---we had met him just a couple of times but he was one of the nicest young men I know of.
Karen--glad to know you are sure of your realtor and your siblings agree. Cannot ask for more than that. Dang on your snowfall total too but I will trade you.
Robin--Smiling at your putting duct tape over your DH's mouth, actually I am giggling about it. Men!!! Your tenderloin sounds wonderful.
Gareth---glad you escaped the brunt of the storm and snowfall.

Weigh in Saturday down 1.2. Whoop de doo!. I was reserving judgement on whether that was “real” or not, and sure enough Sunday jumped up half pound but this morning it was back down. So we will see where it goes from there. This weekend I ate more – 35 and 31 points Saturday and Sunday but it’s a weekday now and discipline returns. Saturday night we went to dinner with ds and gf and I had a salad with grilled salmon but by the time I added it up (candied walnuts, craisins) I think the salad was 12 points. Good thing I didn’t order the fish and chips! Sunday was partially a result of being home all day with the snow storm. I got into the peanut butter. That was the 6 extra points.
As for yesterday's storm, when we went out to clear the driveway last night it seemed like we had about 8". I don't mind a sunday storm when I don't have to be anywhere and I know it's coming. I did my grocery shopping on Saturday and I rather enjoyed being home in sweatpants all day. I got a few small house chores done, not enough of course, and dh did a little vacuuming.
Karen – if you are all comfortable with letting this realtor buy the house then do it. I completely understand the desire to just be done with it, and it makes sense.

I wonder what kind of member I will be after I post.
Saturday we didn't do much. We went to a couple of estate sales which weren't very good. We didn't get anything. One of them had a bunch of books but most were Reader's Digest condensed books. They were trying to sell them, but the library just gives them away at their book sales. I baked a pie and made a chicken casserole for a church dinner. We face-timed with DGS which is always fun. Sunday we went to church, had the church dinner and then went to a family time for a man who had died. He was the father of a friend of ours. He was 90 and up to the last 3 months he had been fairly healthy. All of the sudden, he changed and his house would be a mess and he was seeing things. I don't know if they ever figured out what was wrong. At first, it thought to be because of meds.
Yesterday, it was in the low 60s and rainy. Today it is only 42 right now and more rain is predicted.

What is up with the new names anyway---I don't understand exactly and seem to like the gold, silver or bronze status better---much easier to figure out. However Carol----I love yours, an Epic Member---how cool is that!!! Marsha---I agree I love a snowstorm where you don't have to be anywhere and where whatever you want, but I hate the afterwards of it. Wish it could just happen and then no sign of the snow is left. In my dreams right? !!!!! I came up for Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell in audio so that will be my next book I guess. Will probably get something else for my Kindle to actually read so I have both for our trip. We leave to go to Sioux Falls Wednesday night as our flight leaves Thursday morning at 6:00 meaning be at the airport at 4 am. I hate leaving so early as I am usually tired from the start. With this last snowfall I am so ready to leave the frozen trundra and excited about all parts of our trip. The first 4 days hanging out with our friends from our seed company trip, then just DH and me time as we travel throught the Grand Canyon to Scottsdale and then back to LV and meeting up with our good friends from here for the Nascar weekend and shopping with my dear friend. So much to prepare today and tomorrow though. Finish up tax stuff as we have our appointment for that on Wed. and another appt before we leave. And then get bills paid and stuff in the mail for being gone that many days and of course that many days of figuring out what clothes and items to pack. Which packing is my plan for tomorrow and other things that need done. Yikes---I need to get busy!!

Okay I looked up everyone:
Fabled---well known for being of great quality or rarity---famous
Mythical---idealized, especially with reference to the past
Transcendent---beyond or above the range of normal or merely physical human experience, surpassing the ordinary; exceptional
Epic---a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures or the history of a nation. My definition of epic is----just totally amazing!!!
So Karen and Gareth you are famous!!!!

Yes, what’s with our “new names”?!
We for another 3” of snow overnight. And then it rained a little. What a mess.
Karen, I made the mistake of stopping at Walmart Sunday. What a zoo. There was not one empty shopping cart at the entrance I went in. I waited awhile and then nabbed one from a lady whose cart was empty. Luckily she was done! lol I’ll do my best not to go on a Sunday again.
Pinky, sounds like a great time for you and DH on your trip! Two years ago we flew into Scottsdale and then on to the Grand Canyon. Even though we didn’t spend a lot of time in Old Scottsdale, it was a nice time. I’m glad to hear that young man is doing well. It was benign, right? Now, if it does grow back there will be more surgery, or will he have radiation? Sorry to hear of the other young man. We hear, every winter season, of accidents like that because there are so many ski centers north of here. Helmets are worn but that doesn’t always save you. It seems that speed is usually a factor in these sad cases.
Robin, too funny about the duct tape and DH! He must be the life of the party!
Gareth, I love spring as well. We were married in May. It’s just so nice to open all the windows.
Marsha, congrats on the loss! ANY loss is still a loss! Just last night I made an actual list of all the reasons I want to lose weight. My plan is to read that list every day as a reminder. Hey, it’s worth a try!
Carol, we FaceTime with DGS’s every Sunday. They’re so sweet - we just wish they lived closer. We’ll see them again in May.
Jury still out on The Art of Mending as I’m only a third of the way through it. I think the next book will be A Woman of Independent Means by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey.

Pinky, not sure that I think much of those descriptions. Are those the definitions, or something you found on one of these boards? We took a helicopter to the Grand Canyon when we were in Las Vegas a number of years ago. If we had more time, we would have driven and spent more time exploring the area, but we saw the canyon, and that was that. We spent a number of days in Scottsdale about 3 years ago when DH had a conference. I had just read Loving Frank, so dragged DS to Taliesen West, which was very interesting. They also were having a Chihuly exhibit at the botanical gardens, which was excellent. Not sure if I would have liked it as much if it didn't have the Chihuly. There is also a pretty neat Butterfly Farm there.
I am ready to leave the office, I was just waiting for something from DS that I need to drop off tomorrow morning. Will post more personals from home. It is pouring rain here now.

Robin--I just googled Fabled, Mythical etc and that is what googles definition is so nothing from what the proboards said. We did a helicopter tour about 5 years ago also. I was very leery as I do not love heights much, but have to say that may be one of the favorite things I've ever done. I think it will be fun to drive it now and do a part of Route 66 that leads us to Scottsdale and then back up another road to check out Lake Havasu. When DS and DDIL and family were just in Scottsdale the first of the year for DDIL's brothers wedding they went to the Butterfly farm and the wedding was held at the Botanical Gardens. I am hoping to go to Taliesen West when we are there is year.

Marsha, although I weigh myself all the time, I only count the official WI day, whether I am down or up that day. Good for you on the loss. Whenever I eat something out, although definitely salads are always more than we think, there is also more salt in it. I am sure the salmon has more salt than you would ever put on it at home, and for me, that's always a gain. Are you still swimming? Haven't heard you mention it, and I know that is great exercise.
Carol, nice of you to do so much cooking for the church. I think that the best thing for people who die at a ripe old age, not that 90 is quite as old any more, is when they have a very productive and satisfying life until close to the end.
Anngie, the reason I want to duct tape DH's mouth is that often he will just not shut up! As soon as someone mentions something, he will have his own story to tell. Snow mixed with rain is no fun. I hope it is not snowing up by you now, we are having quite a bit of rain.
Trying to decide whether to cook something for dinner tonight, or take beef stew out of the freezer. Tomorrow we are going to our friends' house so they can sign their wills. He is the one who needs the surgery because of the tumor. They wanted to do this a long time ago, got their drafts, but never came in to sign. Now it is crunch time and they need to.
