I drink quite a bit of water with lemon juice between meals. It seems to fill me up and then I don't have the craving anymore. Also going for a walk or going to Curves helps me.I feel satisfaction because I've done something good for myself instead of giving in to the craving. The author does mention that a bite or two won't satisfy a craving but I feel that 1 bite of something my DH is eating will satisfy my craving and I track that bite so I don't feel guilty for not acknowledging the craving.I also know a craving especially between meals is not an emergency.

My cravings are typically for things I no longer keep in the house. Strangely, I also get cravings for ethnic foods for some reason. A hot beverage can do the trick. If not, going chores or calling a friend works. Cutting back on sugar has lessened the frequency of most cravings.
An about-face distraction seems to be my best weapon against any craving that is really powerful. Interrupting the thought before it becomes obsessive is key for me.
Becky what a great new pic!

I guess I think the best response to cravings is sheer will (won't?) power. I try to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. My current drink of choice is diet tonic with a squeeze of lime or lemon juice. I really should try to eliminate carbonated drinks though. Sometimes a few pieces of Hormel turkey pepperoni help. It's spicy and has lots of flavor. Sometimes I just don't want a piece of fruit, but I'll have a Cutie or Halo and that's easy and it helps. Sometimes just one bite of something my husband is eating as long as I don't have continued access to that food. Just walking away from the kitchen or food source is my main plan of attack on cravings.

I like the idea of labeling it as a craving. That seems to acknowledge it for what it is. That might also help to deny its hold on you. I drink coffee (black) or water with lemon all day long. Like Becky said, thinking I need to eat between meals is not an emergency. Getting out of the kitchen and onto something different distracts me and often the craving disappears. Some days are easier than other days. I'm trying to eat more at my 3 meals which satisfies me longer.

Thanks doordie50. linda72,Are you eating more protein at your meals to keep you more satisfied? The worst time for my eating is between dinner and bedtime.I have found out that if I eat a hard boiled egg when I'm giving my dog her snacks at that time the protein in it is usually just about right.

I haven't had any wild cravings in a while. I did buy pecans today because I decided I wanted them but they will be part of my measured/planned daily snack of nuts. Usually I just have a general urge to eat lately not a craving for something specific. Like Doordie said staying away from sugar and refined carbs helped to cut back on my cravings. My problem right now is portion creep.

@beckyw2016 Yes, I've increased my protein a little. Last night, we had grilled chicken and I used to measure out 3 oz. Now, I do 4 oz. Not sure it actually is enough to make a difference but in my mind I think it's more. I've recently noticed I'm very hungry after my body pump class and I brought a small serving of walnuts to eat after the class and it helped. I think Tammy mentioned eating protein after her run. I think I eat enough fruits so I'm trying to skip that for an afternoon snack. Becky, I think your after dinner snack is mainly a habit, don't you? I do the same thing. I just like to have something at the end of the day. I'm not hungry, it's only been 2 hours since dinner. I just like to eat something then. Kind of a reward for making it through the day. Your bit of protein sounds perfect for you.

linda72,I guess you could say it's mostly habit but I don't snack between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner so I think part of it is to get most of my SP in.Even with a snack I rarely get my 30 SP in.

That business of calling it what it is -- a craving -- works for me. If I can push the pause button long enough to think about what I'm doing, I tell myself that nothing good comes from caving in to a craving. I advise myself to get the hell out of the kitchen and go do something productive. Like Doordie, I mostly don't have craving foods in the house. When you want something specific, substitutes just don't do the job.
Thanks for the comments about the new picture. It's from the embarkation photo from the cruise. I liked that quick assembly line pose-and-shoot photo better than the formal gala-night portraits.

My cravings can be so impulsive that i at times realize it after... I do notice having protein will keep blood sugars level, and much easier to keep cravings under control.
