Day 23 – Counter the Unfairness Syndrome
Beck points out that life is unfair, dieting is unfair and some people use the unfairness they see in the situation to sabotage themselves by not doing what they need to do. She suggests that you admit that some situations are unfair or seem to be unfair and then use “Oh, well” and move on. She points out that there are worse unfair situations out there than us not being able to eat all the cookies we want and lose weight.
She guides us in putting our ideas of things being unfair into perspective.
First step is “Remind yourself why you decided to diet in the first place.” (Advantages Response Card) When you decided to diet the disadvantages of not dieting were stronger than the advantages to not dieting.
Second “Make a mental list of the advantages in your life.” Now compare your advantages to how other people live all over this country and the world.
Third “Create a Response Card.” If you have problems with feeling dieting is unfair make up a card and talk back to yourself with a helpful response remembering that the greatest unfairness in this is not making your goal or not maintaining your goal weight.

I don't have feelings of unfairness in that I had to work to lose weight and work to maintain my weight loss. So many people are overweight and obese, and then there are those working on their weight I know I'm not alone. Also I taught myself to overeat so it is all on me.

I don't feel it is unfair. Each of us has one thing or another that is more difficult or has to be overcome. Not everyone has weight issues but everyone has an issue of one kind or another.
I am not "dieting" right now but am focusing on healthy choices at each meal. Some meals are easier than others. Not having much but the basics in the house makes healthy eating a lot easier. Sweets tend to be the homemade jam made from our fruits, candied orange rind from our oranges and carob molasses usually mixed with tahini and eaten with bread. So...perhaps not point friendly but tasty and sort of healthy.

I don’t feel that it’s unfair that I have to control my weight. If I was in a situation where no matter what I did, there was a physiological reason that I couldn’t lose weight then I might consider THAT unfair. People have all sorts of things going on with them that they didn’t create and can’t do anything about. I’m grateful that my weight is something I can change.

I never had issues with unfairness. I gained weight when I was overeating unhealthy food all the time. It was all on me.

Yeah, some people can eat all they want and never gain a pound. Others eat less and gain easily. Those same skinny people can also have heart attacks and strokes and whatever even though they look 'perfect' on the outside. So I don't feel any unfairness at this point. Some skinny people I know are miserable - would I prefer to be skinny and miserable? Nope. I'm fine as I am and if I want to lose weight it's on me and me alone to do the hard work needed.
