Thinking Mistake #3 -- Overly Positive Fortune Telling
You predict the future too positively, without considering other possible outcomes.
"I'll be able to eat just a little bit of this food I crave, feel satisfied, and stop."
"It's okay if I just estimate the amount of food I'm supposed to have instead of measuring it. I'll still lose weight."

That's like playing a rouletter wheel. Sometimes you may win and maintain but most of the time the odds are against you. The best thing we can do is to keep doing what we should do, forget about the fortune telling and realize even if we may not gain tomorrow the scale will catch up with us and it won't be pretty.

This is a thinking mistake that for me is ever present. I like to negotiate my eating so it suits my immediate need be it a craving, hunger or if something shows up that looks really good. My best defense is to ignore this thought and tell myself that that whatever looks good now will definitely show up on the scale. It is also unbecoming when I whine about the scale number as if it goes up on its own.

I have a tendency to have more negative fortune telling but, I can see the pitfalls of this kind of thinking too. Hope everyone has a good day.

Colleen: I also whine when the scale goes up and end up having to work through all sorts of reasons for it that I come up with, then I settle down and admit what is happening and do what I have to do.
I often pull this when I go our to eat. Think that this "one" meal won't make a difference, but it does, plus it leads me to a weaken resistance muscle.

I do this all the time. Justify eating off plan. Most of the time I am ok but times like this when I stop tracking is when weight creeps up.
Today is day #3 tracking. Boy have my eyeball portions been wrong in a few cases. Doing well at tracking again so far. Feels good to be monitoring it again.

I also do this when eating out. I under estimate the amounts I'm eating or I justify it with the idea that it's just one meal. True, but over eating is still over eating no matter when it is. I still think it's okay to enjoy a meal out but I need to be more honest about it.

I had a big explosion of this yesterday. We received one of those Harry & David Tower of Treats via UPS. DH opened it all up to reveal chocolate/caramel corn, chocolate truffles, mixed nuts, candied cherries, and at the very bottom some of those delicious pears. Since yesterday was the day before weigh-in, I promised myself just a taste of each of those goodies. (Except the pears, which I put in the fridge.) Much later, after way more than "just a taste," I knew I had to get this poison out of the kitchen. I bundled it all up and put it upstairs in DH's reading room by his recliner and shut the door to the room.
This morning at weigh-in, guess what!!!! I was up 2.3 lbs!!! Who would have seen such a thing coming!! I couldn't even whine. Today I have been strictly strictly on plan. DH tried to bring me one of the truffles and the last bit of mixed nuts, but I sent him away with that stuff.

ladymajky Oh, Carol, I'm so sorry. Don't you just hate when that happens. I've not made the 2 Christmas cookies this year because I'm afraid I'll be so weak with them in the house. I don't feel strong about them being around this year. Not sure why. Just remember, Carol, you are a thin person so you've had your taste and now you're done.

I tend to underestimate more when we go to a buffet and there aren't exact servings.Kenneth will offer me a bite of his food at home and I have been taking a crumb or small bite and think it won't hurt me.Today I was able to resist since the scale has been up a little since Sunday.
