Day 34 Solve Problems
The first step in solving a problem is to identify the problem and in some cases the “real” problem. I don’t know about you but sometimes things are amiss and we need to do some mental and emotional sorting to get to the bottom of things.
Side note: Do you have any suggestions for figuring out the problem.
Beck says that once you’ve decided what the problem is to identify the negative thoughts running through your mind and use to Seven Question Technique to respond to your negative thoughts.
Seven Question Technique:
1. What kind of thinking error could I be making?
2. What evidence is there that this thought might not be true (or not completely true)?
3. Is there an alternative explanation or another way of viewing this?
4. What is the most realistic outcome of this decision?
5. What is the effect of my believing this thought and what could be the effect of changing my thinking?
6. What would I tell a (close friend or family member) if he/she were in this situation and had this thought?
7. What should I do now?
Beck cautions that you can’t solve every problem but while you might not be able to solve a problem you can change you attitude and outlook.
We covered a lot of this on Day27 when we discussed the Seven Question Technique.
How do you go about solving problems/working through things?

I solve problems by thinking things through and working things out in my head. I'll also discuss things with my friends and my husband. One thing I do is keep an open mind in case a solution comes along for an open problem I can recognize it. Also I have depression and anxiety so over the years I've had to learn to figure out if the problem(s) are problems or manifestations of my depression and anxiety.

Sometimes I solve problems by working through them and other times the solution hits me hard...like this morning.
I SAY that I know I have to record in my journal to lose weight so I write in the foods but don't always put in points/calories if it is higher than I know it should be. This morning I decided (again) to weigh, measure and record honestly. Writing it down without that information is just writing down a menu...not really tracking in the way I must to get the weight off...
Anyway...lunch is recorded along with all the details and 30 minutes of walking is also recorded. Now to figure out lunch and dinner meals that will see me OP and within points for the day.

I have found I do better by not putting pressure on myself and letting a solution come to me in its own time.

I find solutions to my challenges once I embrace all the components that are involved. That’s when I can discern the portion that I can actually control and I can develop a strategy. Sometimes it turns out that it isn’t something that I can solve but I can limit my exposure to it.
