Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read.Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Brrr! It is 36 degrees to start the day here, and windy. Right now we have clear skies, but later scattered rain. So our warm temps are gone, for at least the next 7 days.
Gareth, your walk was like mine, yesterday. But my goodness, by around 2:30 yesterday afternoon that wind sure kicked up! Sad that the nice warm temps are gone. I think I was used to it, I got up this morning, and had to turn the fire place on! Thanks, about my DD. She seemed to be feeling a ton better yesterday, she thinks the prednisone is helping a lot. Sounds like you are getting used to working at home. I feel bad for my DSIL, as he is working from home, and the only place for him to work is in their basement. Their basement has not be redone, but they have 1 area all fixed up for the kids, so he had to get another part of the basement fixed up for him. He said the thing he misses the most is being able to talk to his coworkers whenever he wanted, now it is a chat online, which is just not the same thing.
Carol, the lack of testing in Houston is the same here. Everyone I know that has gone in to get checked, while sick, was not given the test. So I do not know where they are getting the numbers for the confirmed cases. I would hate to think if my DH or I had to work from home too, it just wouldn't work. It would have been hard too, at the old house, except at the old house, we had the basement all fixed up, so we could have used that. My DD does have kids, they are 12, and 10, so if they get sick, at least they are not real little. So far the rest of the family is doing good, and DD is doing way better, being on the prednisone. Yikes, I feel bad for you, if you get a freeze!!! I have not heard any warnings here about a freeze, yet.
Pinky, this chillier weather is almost too hard to handle, after the last few days!! I miss it already. I miss the days of putting sheets out on the line; I was not able to do that at the old house, all those years, as with the way the back yard was set up, with the woods so close to the yard, and the big mound system taking up so much of that yard, there was not a good place to put the clothes line. I was so unhappy about it when we first moved in, years ago, but got used to the fact that I could not hang out. The bad thing about nurses and others in the health care field getting laid off, and people saying they should be reassigned, that is not so easy, as most nurses that work in the hospitals are specialized as you know, and most of them are not trained as to how to work a ventilator. This pandemic has shown the U.S. the major flaws in our system. Thank you, about my DD, she is getting better already, so I am pretty sure it is not covid.
Robin, Happy Passover!!! I am not sure if you will stop in here, but if you do: I truly loved your table setting! It is so sad you and your family can't get together like you usually do, for this important holiday.
Anngie, as for the pumping of gas, I have not gotten gas in my car in at least a month, lol! Whenever we go anywhere now, which for me is maybe once a week, I go with DH in his jeep, so he is getting gas, and when he does, when he is done, he uses his hand sanitizer that we have in the vehicles, then when he comes home he washes his hands. Like someone on here said, even with the hand sanitizer, you still want to wash your hands the minute you come in your house. Thank you, about my DD, yes she is better, almost totally. As I mentioned earlier, a lot of nurses are specialty trained, so they can not do lateral moves within a hospital. Hence the lay offs.
Marsha, Happy Passover!!! I loved your table setting, as well. I did not know Passover needs so much tableware! I don't think I would have the room for all of that, that is needed.
Was able to walk 2 miles yesterday, and as last week, I had to push to get it done, I really need a good training program, but that is not going to happen for awhile. Glad I went when I did, as an hour later the wind kicked up so hard! I would have not been able to walk into that wind.
DH has been having good luck fishing everyday, he is going today also, but knows today will be the last day in awhile, what with the weather changing, I guess the fish won't bite. So my days here alone will be over.
With my order at the grocery store I used to work at left open till I pick it up tomorrow, I have been adding to the list all week. It is actually pretty nice to have it like that. But the bill!!! Yikes!!! And it will take us awhile to haul everything up to the apartment, then clean what needs to be cleaned first, before putting it all away.
Need that 2nd cup of coffee, have a nice day and stay safe!

Karen, our weather this morning is almost identical except we're at 38º It's sunny so looking out it looks nice. I debated about walking outdoors until I saw how our flag was whipping around. Good news about your DD! So glad she's feeling better and it wasn't covid-19.
Robin, your table setting was so beautiful.
Marsha, your table setting was beautiful too.
Anngie, any news on Jon?
Pinky, your weather doesn’t sound great either but better than a couple of years ago though huh?
Carol, you're having crazy weather too. In the 90's and then a freeze this weekend. That is crazy!
Finished The Address by Fiona Davis which I really liked. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a good book. I'll listen to The Secret Mother next.
Applebee’s have 1/2 price hamburgers this week so since theirs are my favorite we'll get takeout for lunch. Looking forward to it since it's been awhile. They have my favorite french fries too. I just hope they don't get soggy doing takeout.

Gareth, our temp here is still in the 30's...38 to be exact, my goodness, and the wind is howling, just not happy with this, lol!!! The weather guy just said that Sunday our fun weather will start as rain, and switch to snow, and it could go all night and into Monday, and, he said it looks at this time like it could be heavy at times!!! Yes, I am ready to cry!!!
I read The Address too, and also LOVED it!!! A very excellent read!!! I wish now, that I hadn't read it, so I could read it now!!
I had not heard that about Applebee's! Is it through the weekend? Or just through Friday? I think that would be a good thing to do for us on Saturday. Thanks for the tip.

Good Morning!
Karen--glad your DD is feeling better. Your mention of your DSIL reminded me of a comment you made a few days ago and pretty sure I didn't respond to--not even sure it is the same DSIL---But what I thought was so sweet was that he wanted to wait to use the gift card you gave him for his birthday until you could all go eat together. What a great guy!!!
Gareth---yes sunny here too but windy and cold. Only 30 degrees here and looks like the high will be 36 for the day---BBBRRRRR!!!!! Right at 50 tomorrow and almost that on Saturday. Then in the lower 30's come Sun-Tues. Going to be a cold Easter and they are talking snow on the western side of SD in the Hills and Rapid City. I have had The Address on my TBR list for sometime, thanks for the reminder.
Marsha and Robin---Happy Passover!!! I know it will be a different for you with no extra guests but hope you enjoy your small groups. We will be doing the same on Sunday with our Easter, just DH and I!
Anngie and Carol---hello
I am still listening to What Happens in Paradise--not very far into it yet. I really liked the first one Winter in Paradise. Between being in the shop and office more with seed orders and just not being in the mood for reading or listening. It appears so many of us are feeling that way right now---I need to get back to it, as it should be a distraction from whats going on. With not being in the mood my Summer of 69 went poof again, it has been hard to get into that one so not sure if I will try for it again or not. I think that is why I went for Winter in Paradise when it came up as I knew the first book I really wanted to be listening to it all the time. That was before COVID became such a nightmare in the US so makes the difference too.
I was surprised to see that on Tuesday afternoon I recommended Hidden Valley Road through my overdrive and yesterday I received an email that they had it for me if I wanted to borrow----WOW I must have had some pull on that, probably because it had all been mentioned on CBS Tuesday morning was the drawing card but I must have been the first one to recommend since I was first to get it. That has happened to me twice before this also and I think those other 2 books had been mentioned by a few of you here or on the FB booklovers group. You gals helped me with getting them. Hope this new one is good or I might get on their naughty list.
I called DGS right away this morning to tell him Happy Birthday. He is 11 and of course is very aware of what all is going on in the world. I feel so bad for him that he doesn't get to celebrate in his normal way. DD is off of work for today and DSIL is a teacher so of course he has been home with the boys everyday. They will have a good bonding day at least and gets to spend his day with his family---which probably isn't much like any other day right now. DD works 4 days a week which is her norm so she had requested today to be her day off this week. He is so mature for his age both physically and mentally. DH and I have mentioned driving up there just to go by their house and honk or maybe even stop and sing Happy Birthday to him through the window but not sure if that will make his day or make it worse that we are there but can't even stay. Plus it is the 5 hour round trip that makes us question it also with not getting to even spend time with him. Although I think DH and I could use just a drive to get out but then there is the what if we have to stop for bathroom or something and who wants those convenience store germs.

Karen, Applebee's 1/2 price burger special is through Saturday.
Pinky, that's a long drive to sing happy birthday from your car. How about face timing or zoom with the family instead?

What a rainy day today is! However, the weekend looks nice.
Gareth, Jon was discharged yesterday. They told him it’ll be awhile until he‘s better but they said they think he’s over the hump. I sure hope so! Thanks for asking. I’ll check into The Address.
Karen, wow, good job on the 2 mile walk! Until I have this procedure done, I can get through two stores but that’s it for walking. Glad to hear DD is better. What will all of you be doing for Easter?
Pinky, wow - you must rate - getting that book so quickly! My DS2’s birthday is Saturday and it’ll be the first time we didn’t get together for dinner and cake & ice cream. He’ll be 33 - not sure where those years went! I’ve always baked my mom’s cake recipe throughout the years. Oh well.
I can’t seem to get a handle on when this Coronavirus will even start to subside - spring or not until summer? Then, will it come back in the fall? I guess we just play it well by week!
I hope Marsha & Robin are enjoying the start of Passover. I’ll bet their tables were beautifully set!

I guess everyone has a lot of free time, lots of reading, but I will have to come back to read the posts.
Karen, the crazy thing about the weather here is that it goes from warm, so the house heats up and I need to put on the AC for a bit, then it gets cold, and we need heat. Now it's raining, so heat for the day.
Here is my funny story of the day, only not so funny because I am ready to kill him. My DH decided the gefilte fish I served last night was terrible. It comes as a frozen log that you cook. Some people consider that home made, but he is spoiled and wants real home made. I told him to go to our local neighborhood grocery, but neglected to tell him he should buy what they sell in the deli, because although not exactly like what our mothers made, still very good. First, I will say, they will not let anyone in the store without a mask and gloves. He bought a different brand of fish in a jar, masks, so that was good, then 2 boxes of Passover cookies, 1 Passover cake, 2 tins of macaroons, and jelly fruit slices. The problem with this is, I don't buy the prepared cakes or cookies because they are so expensive, I don't buy the macaroons because no matter what they say they are made of, he will not eat them and I will, and I had just showed him the jelly fruit slices I already bought! Serves me right for letting him go shopping.
Onto good news, our Zoom seder last night was fun, we will do it again tonight with our DS's and DDIL's - they did last night with the DDIL's family. And, my DDIL was at the doctor this morning and she is 1 centimeter dilated, so it will come! They did some kind of membrane scraping, which sometimes makes them move along further. I will have to see what that is, never heard of it.
Thanks about my table. I am thinking of using a different set of dishes for tonight. I just have to remember which cabinet they are in.

Gareth---yup we skipped the drive, however being home so much the drive sounded nice. Had it been a nicer day weatherwise it would have made for a better drive. Yes we have used facetime a couple of times with him already today and plan on a Zoom meeting again on either Saturday or Sunday. Saturday was the day we had planned his family party for and of course Easter is Sunday and we will remain apart all of us, so should work well to do one of those days as we should have all been together those 2 days. Anngie--glad Jon is doing better, sounds encouraging for him. I'm sure even though your DS is going to be 33 the fact you can't be together and always have been is just hard. Robin--yoohoo on the dilation even if small. I think the scraping of the membranes can go either way. DD's second baby they scraped and things happened so fast she went directly to the hospital and delivered in 2 hours. Her 3rd baby born last August they scraped the membrane and both she and DSIL were like you are sending me home? ? Doctor said no problem and I think it was 5 days later before she went into labor. I have either forgotten or don't think to ask why they do that these days. Anyways I am excited for you---it is getting close!!!

Robin, that is exciting! Getting close to having a grandbaby!
It's a little cooler today. They've taken the freeze out of the forecast, but we will get cooler and should get rain.
Pinky, hope your GS gets a party soon.
DH has been working from home some this week. He had asked for tomorrow off as a vacation day. He said he wasn't going to work so I don't know what he has in mind to do-maybe yard work.

Pinky, and everyone else, we used Zoom for our Seder, I think Marsha used that too. It is nice to do it for us because we read through everything and say the prayers, I don't know if you have something similar you can do, like a short service, maybe plan some hymns or psalms to sing. Thanks for telling me your DD had the scraping, I had never heard of it. So far, not in labor! But, she looked tired tonight.
Long 2 days, and I am tired, a lot of work for just the 2 of us. It is not like just cooking dinner. But, we did open 2 very good bottles of wine from our favorite vineyard in Australia. The ones we went on the Alaska cruise with. At least I ended up with lots of leftovers. I have 2 full containers of cabbage soup, and I left almost all the meat for those 2. We made a prime rib tonight and each only had 1 slice, and I didn't even finish mine, and I have brisket from last night, so a very heavy meat week, but that's fine.
