Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read.Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Brrr! 33 here this morning, but it looks like the winds have stopped. High of 43 today.
Pinky, about my DSIL, yes, he his married to DD2, who turned up sick earlier this week. I had sent the gift card to him, by way of the eatery/brewery, early, so he could decide when he would like to use it, maybe as a nice take out dinner for him and my DD. So I was a bit surprised when he sent that message. I know he looks to us as parents, but still. He is a great guy, my DD is so lucky to have him, he does most of the cooking, which he loves doing, and does his share of cleaning. Also does the grocery shopping. He actually likes doing all those things. I read Summer of 69 and I had that problem also, it took me forever to actually get into it. Happy Birthday to your DGS. My one and only DGS will be 13 in July, and I feel he is a tad immature for his age. He is a sweetheart, but he just seems a bit younger than his age. Maybe that is just how he presents himself around us. Speaking of taking a drive, I was going to go with DH to look at a boat tomorrow, which would be around an hour away. I was fine with that, till he said yesterday his best friend offered to go with him. So I said, fine, go with him. I was looking forward to taking a ride, but I think his friend would be able to offer more input about the boat, than I would. (They would both be wearing masks.)
Gareth, thank you, sounds like something we will fit in today!
Anngie, glad you will have a nice holiday weekend, we will have a nice Saturday, but Sunday!!! Oh my, here comes the snow, with it starting Sunday and going into Monday. Seems to be getting to be a habit here, to have an April snow storm. Thank you! Yesterday was so blustery and snow showers off and on, that I walked a total of 35 minutes around the apartment. As to Easter, I have a small ham I need to take out of the freezer, so we will have that, and scalloped potatoes, and green beans. The grocery order we are picking up today has carrot cake cupcakes from their very good bakery in it, so that will be dessert. A simple meal. What are you having?
Robin, being in the upper, we have not had the furnace on for so long, what I like, is if it is chilly in the morning, I turn on the fireplace and it's heater. That takes the chill out, and maybe an hour or 2 later we are good for the day. I know if we were still at the old house, we would have that furnace running a lot! ($$$$). Oh boy, I have a DH so much like yours!!! I have learned, that unless I am on my death bed, he will never go to the grocery store alone!!! Lol. Yay, on your Zoom Seder!!!! How was last night? Good luck to your DDIL!!! Hope she goes quick and has an easy, delivery, and all is fine. (I have never heard of the procedure, had to google it.) All of your food sound so good!! I could go for a slice of prime rib!
Carol, yay on the freezing gone!!!! That would have been bad. We are all so unhappy up here, about the talk of the snow storm coming Sunday. But as I said earlier, it seems to be a pattern for the last 2 April's. Very depressing. About your DH having off today, I have to keep reminding myself that today is actually a holy day, being it is Good Friday. Just so weird! When I was in grade school, going to a Catholic school, we had off of school that day, but were required to go to church that afternoon for the Stations of the Cross. I came to hate that. Did that work out ok, with your DH working from home, as you said there really isn't a place he can go for privacy to work.
Yesterday, the weather was so weird. It would be sunny, while the day was so windy, but every so often we would have big bursts of snow. It did not stay, it melted.
Running to do today, delivering to DD2 porch a bag of peanut butter cookies I made, we just don't need all those here. I did freeze a few. Then on to the Credit Union to withdraw $$$ for DH, in case he ends up buying that boat tomorrow. Then we will be picking up our curb side grocery order. This is a big one. Glad I read yesterday that we do not have to clean all of the groceries you bring home!! It's bad enough that we have to haul it all upstairs! Then we have to go look at a storage unit for the boat to be stored in. I am looking forward to all this, as I have been in the house all week, except for the couple walks outside.
Have a nice day and stay safe!!! Let's flatten that curve!!!

A cloudy morning here but mild temps once again so I will take it.
Robin--this is what healthline says about stripping membranes: It involves your doctor sweeping their (gloved) finger between the thin membranes of the amniotic sac in your uterus. It's also known as a membrane sweep. This motion helps separate the sac. It stimulates prostaglandins, compounds that act like hormones and can control certain processes in the body. Another spot I googled says average delivery after this is 4 days-----you are going to be a grandma soon--so excited for you. Also see where this can't be done until at least 1 centimeter dilated---things are right on track.
Karen--guessing you were looking forward to the drive, but nice that DH can spend time with a friend too and you get that alone time. Hope that boat works out and your DH will be able to enjoy that. Will you go out in it with him? We had your yesterdays weather on Wednesday---these snow squalls would come through and almost look like a blizzard at times. It never accumulated to anything but really weird. Right by garage door a little bit blew up to it and they were just like little styrofoam beads.
We ended up zooming with DGS last night for his birthday and both DS's families joined in to. We all sang him Happy Birthday and then we watched him blow out the candles on his cake. All in all he had a very nice day. The firetrucks of their town all drove by there house last night with the sirens going and the first truck on the loud speaker told him Happy Birthday. DD videoed it and sent it to us. Very cool!
As Karen said, it seems really weird that it is Good Friday and Easter weekend is upon us and we have no plans. I have a ham steak I think I will make for DH and I for Easter dinner and most likely baked potatoes with a dinner salad and probably corn. Although it is going to be a very different Easter for all of us and has been a different passover for others I do wish everyone an enjoyable quiet time of celebration.

Karen, I do have to say, especially because you have said they are not testing people there, you should go with your DH, not his friend. Here in NY, we are not supposed to be with anyone who does not live in our household, so unless they are going to drive separately, and stay at least 6 feet away from each other when they get there, they should not go together.
Pinky, I did read up on the membrane scraping. I am hoping it works for her. I haven't spoken to them today. She looked tired last night when we Zoomed. She had walked up to the doctor in the morning, but was very excited when she came back.
DS does a lot of the cooking, and they were eating the chicken dish he had made the day before again. Everyone loves it, and the full recipe that I sent him calls for 2 chickens so that is what he made. My other DS also cooks, and he made brisket. I have both my brisket and prime rib left over. I am wasting away the day here. I am trying to decide whether to load up the dishwasher with pots and pans, and waste a Dishwasher detergent packet on that load. That is what I am going to run out of, not toilet paper or paper towels.

Karen, this morning we were colder than you. It was 27Âş when I got up. 51Âş is the predicted high. Yesterday was so windy. Still pretty breezy today but nothing like yesterday. We had what the weatherman called graupel. I'd never heard of it. Googling it said it's also called soft hail or snow pellets, is precipitation that forms when supercooled water droplets are collected and freeze on falling snowflakes. Accumulating snow is predicted for us Sunday night. Latest I heard we're on the edge of it so could only get an inch or two not like what they'll get north of us. Hope things don't change between now and then. I wondered the same thing too as Robin about DH's friend going with him. Should he really even be going in first place? No way of knowing how safe it is being around who's selling the boat either. I think masks can give a false sense of security.
Robin, how exciting for you! Almost g-ma time!
Pinky, sounds like your DGS ended up having a good birthday. Isn't Zoom great? I've heard firemen here and surrounding areas have been doing the same for birthdays. Kids are loving it.
I'm planning chicken and stuffing in the crockpot for our Easter dinner. I have zucchini I'll air fry. We both love it fixed that way. I'm thinking do we really need dessert so no plans on making anything.

Gareth--will you share your air fryer zucchini recipe with me?

Pinky, I really don't have a recipe. I either slice or cut the zucchini into chunks and put in a ziploc bag with a little oil and parmesan cheese and shake well and air fry.

I had never heard of graupel until a cousin who lives in Idaho posted on Facebook that they had some last week. Someone else asked what it was. They keep changing our forecast. Now it is supposed to be in the 50s and 60s for the next five days except Sunday when it should get in the 70s. It should rain tomorrow. It would take me a while to get used to having snow in April.
Our DSIL does most of their cooking. Our DD does a little. Earlier this week when we were on Facetime, DSIL was excited because he had finally found some yeast at the grocery store and was making a starter for sour dough bread. They take turns going to the grocery store. They had been using Walmart pick up, but felt a little guilty using it so they decided the pick up should be used by older people and others who don't need to go into the store.
I read, too, that you don't need to clean all the groceries. I think there is still a lot of misinformation around like the masks. At first I heard they wouldn't help and now it's everyone should wear them. I read where the governor of Florida was talking about re-opening their schools because no kids had died from the virus. Well, that blew up since it is wrong. Sometimes I wonder about politicians making up facts to fit what they want.
Our church is not having a sunrise service. We will have the regular service on Youtube.
I'm reading A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson. She has a detective series that I really like. This one is rather odd and I'm having trouble getting into it. It is a companion book to Life After Life which I know some hated. For his birthday, DH's sister sent him The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson. It is about Churchill during WW2. Larson writes very readable history. It was on my list to check out so I will read it after DH.
Robin, you must be excited.

We’re having a miserable weather day here today. Blustery, flurries and rain. Oh my.
Karen, for some reason I thought DH had bought a boat and was just waiting to pick it up. So I take it he hasn’t found one yet. I think little boys are a bit younger acting than their age - and even more so around the people they love. Nothing wrong about that!
Robin, soon you’ll be posting “she’s here”! Can’t wait to hear her name too! Filling a dishwasher full of pots and pans isn’t wasting a detergent pod, in my book!
Pinky, I remember (way back when) the OB-GYN would do an “internal” to get things started. Maybe they don’t do that anymore. For me it wasn’t an issue because both my sons came three weeks early - to the day!
Gareth, how about pudding or jello? Easy and at least it can be fat free! I wonder if I tried that zucchini and then baked it it would be just as good?
I’ve decided to make lasagna for Easter this year. Never in my 65 years have I had that for Easter dinner! I’ll also have a tossed salad and garlic bread. Not exactly point friendly, but I can at least monitor my portions. I usually don’t eat the bread anyway. We’ve never had an Easter this quiet, either, but we will FaceTime so that’ll be nice.
Hi to Carol & Marsha!

Not sure if I mentioned, but my dry cleaner is having his seamstress sew masks for their customers who give them fabric. The driver just dropped off DH's shirt order that was ready, and I left him 3 old shirts, truthfully they were in great condition out of their cleaning bag, but they always were a little too small in the neck, and got even tighter. I left a note with it that they could make me 4 masks, and use the rest for other customers who don't have fabric.
Lasagna sounds like a great idea Anngie, one of my favorite foods. I know a lot of people make lasagna for Passover, using matzoh instead of noodles, but I never have. It is very windy down here, and gray looking, but after some rain overnight, it has not rained.
Gareth, I have definitely not heard of graupel, you learn something new every day.
Carol, that governor of Florida is just an idiot. I don't know what he is thinking. First he left his beaches open for much too long. When he finally put a stay at home order in he said that they can still hold church services, so I would not listen to anything that he says. Wearing masks does protect other people not yourself, but as long as everyone wears them when they go out, or go into stores, not really in the street, it will make things work. Although NY does have a lot of deaths, the hospital admissions and ICU admissions are flattening out, or even dropping.
We had left over brisket for lunch, so now I want to come up with a lighter dinner. I will have to wait to see what DH will decide he wants. I have a recipe to make banana pancakes for Passover, and could also do something with eggs and potatoes. I have left over asparagus and brussel sprouts, so could do something with them too.

Gareth---that sounds good and easy enough. I know all air fryers are different but what temp and how long do you do yours for a rough idea? I hadn't heard of graupel before either----thanks for the lesson today!!!
Carol---no sunrise service for us either and life streaming a 10:00 service. Can be watched on youtube after the fact. A book by Erik Larson I have been wanting to read is Devil in the White City---have had it on my list forever.
Anngie---Your welcome for the weather---sorry it went your way. To be perfectly honest I don't know what the term internal means either. Both of my sons came 2 days before their due date and DD came 2 days after her due date. Always take the girls a little longer to get ready to make an appearance right??!!!! DH always commented on that when we were waiting for DD to be ready to go somewhere and everyone else was already to go---LOL!!!
Robin---good idea on donating the shirts---a win win---rid of the shirts---have masks---donation besides!!! I am really wondering how many of our coronvirus cases in the young people in SD came from springbreak in Florida. Up until a few days ago our SD statistic chart has had the most cases in the 20-29 age group than any other age group. I think of those early 20's as students that could have easily been on springbreak. Just my own thoughts. That age group is the 3rd largest now with 30-39 years being the highest and 50-59 year olds next and just a couple more than the 20-29 year olds.

Devil in the White City is very good as is Isaac's Storm.
That's great that the dry cleaner is making masks.
Lasagna sounds good. Some restaurants are closed for Easter. I haven't really thought about what we would do. We really need to make a grocery store run, but keep putting it off.
I heard New York hospital admissions are flattening out. That is good news. How will they decide when things can get back to normal, whatever that is. I'm trying not to listen to politicans or newspeople. The doctors seem to be the best bet for accurate information though I did read Trump was consulting Dr. Oz. I don't want to offend anyone, but I think he is a quack.

Carol, they are flattening because it has been a long time already, and as he says, people did what they were told to do. On March 12th they told non-essential businesses that they could only have 50% of their workforce, and there were limits put on restaurants, then by the 22nd everything non-essential was closed and social distancing started. Those states who took too long to make the decision are going to have to ride it out longer.
The reason kids got it on spring break is because the governor of Florida refused to close down the beaches. Although they said it statistically hits the older people harder, the reality is that many more cases are in the lower age groups, they just can ride it out without getting hospitalized.
I am having a great time right now listening to a Billy Joel Concert on Facebook.
