Beck Week 3 Day 17 – End Overeating
Today you are supposed to put extra food on your plate for a meal and then don’t eat it. The idea is this will help you stop eating even when there is food on your plate. I must admit I’ve never done this although I do it when we eat out. When I’m served my dinner at a restaurant, I make a mental note of the maximum I will eat. I either box up the rest or let DH eat it.
Carol says,
STOP OVEREATING
* The Thin Person is NOT a member of the Clean Plate Club
* The Thin Person is NOT a human garbage can
* The Thin Person eats until no longer hungry, and then STOPS EATING
* I want to remain a Thin Person, so I do what a Thin Person does
Thinking that you are a Thin person can help you realize that goal.
Listening for "the sigh" (the feeling that you have had enough food) can provide a clue as to when you should stop eating. It took me awhile to hear that but now I stop as soon as I hear that.

I've never filled my plate with more than I want at home to test this out. Of course at restaurants the plates are almost always too full. It's hard the. To know when to stop if the food is quite delicious. I try to watch others eat in restaurants. Sometimes I see thin people clearing their plates. Sometimes I see thin women pick at their sandwiches and French fries and leave 3/4 of the meal on the plate. I do not know how they can do that. Sometimes my husband, who is fairly supportive, will start commenting when I only eat half my meal that I haven't eaten anything. I have thought that I should ask for a container at the beginning of the meal, but I never do that. I have a hard time hearing "the sigh". I need to think like a thin person!

This is a good exercise and I've done it before at home and will do it later today. I'm pretty good about eating only half at a restaurant and bringing the other half home. Sometimes though I have to negotiate with myself to stop eating.

I have to talk out loud to myself as I approach a restaurant to remind myself that it's OK not to eat everything I'm served. The folks in the kitchen don't know whether I am a Thin Person or not-Thin. They dish up enough food to satisfy the not-Thin. I need to eat like a Thin Person.
When they bring the food out and put it down in front of me, I know right then whether it will be too much to eat. I ask right then, at the very moment they put the plate down, to bring the to-go box. Usually I joke about it with the server. They have never given me the stink-eye for making this request. Be brave, Jan. You can do it.
At home, I only cook as much as I'm allowed to have because I don't deal well with leftovers.

I'm with you gals. I always ask for a to-go box for half of the meal and at home we make just enough for that particular meal. If by chance we make a dish with many ingredients, we will make double (because its just easier) and freeze the other portions for another night.
Happy St. Patrick's Day Everyone!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! doordie50, I think the problem with the ice-cream-ish thingies is the type of sugar, not the fat. Not all sugar is created equal. A glass of skim milk is actually an acceptable solution for a diabetic whose blood glucose is too low. If the food comes out, and it's like "Wow, too much." Then I will make a mental note about how much I'm going to eat (ie. 1/2). For me, stopping is not a problem at any point if I realize that I can "save for later". For me, "save for later" is a great solution: the food isn't wasted, I don't have to make more food, I do better eating more frequent, smaller meals, and it allows me to stop eating.

I have never tried this exercise at home b/c I have already tracked what I plan to eat and I don't go over what I have tracked for a certain meal. When we eat out I normally eat a grilled chicken salad of some kind.Today we went to Whataburger. It has been awhile since I have been able to eat the whole salad.Sometimes I eat 1/2 and other times I ate 3/4 of it b/c I had only had 5 SP for breakfast and I knew I needed more.I knew going in I would leave part of it.By having salad even in a fast food place I don't mind leaving part of it.My DH has been super supportive and he has never said anything about me leaving part of a meal.If it's something I can take home to our dog I will get a to go box.We have a local diner and I usually end up getting the veggie plate so I know I'm not overeating.
I do think on the salads I make for myself I may have been making them a bit too big b/c by time I have my raspberries which I need for the fiber sometimes I'm a little past feeling comfortable but not stuffed. We may be having pork chops tonight and since they are so thick DH and I always split one and there are 4 in a package so it lasts longer and I know it will be a lower point meal.
With my IBS acting up so much this week between the constipation and the diarrhea and feeling bloated I have been thinking today about maybe eating smaller more frequent meals.I can't eat a smaller breakfast since it's only 5 SP and less than 200 calories.I need to decide how and how much I need between then and dinner. The problem in my head about the smaller more frequent meals is I'm thinking I will start thinking about food and thinking I can eat all the time and go back to overeating.
I know Carol talks about watching thin people eating. We were in our local diner the other day and I had my veggie plate and there was a rather noisy bunch of ladies at the table across from us which is what brought my attention to their table. There were 2 younger looking ladies who couldn't have had an oz of fat on their stomach and when we were leaving the waitress brought their food the 2 small ones had both ordered a big hamburger and fries.I was asking myself how they could do that and not gain weight then I answered my own question. They don't do it all the time.I have to get it in my head I can splurge once a month or so on a special event but not do it all the time.
