Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read.Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Chilly start, at 27, but the sun is out, and the strong winds have died down. High expected of 32. We are going backwards for the week.
First, I must say, CONGRAT Robin!!! Or should I say, Grandma Robin? A perfect size, girl, and her name! Love it! Did you know before hand her name? Have you figured out what day you get to meet/hold/snuggle her? We will expect a lot of pictures on FB!!!
Gareth, isn't this cold weather awful? That wind yesterday was horrific! We just went out to drive our garbage over to the dumpster, then go check mail, and that was enough for me! I could not believe I saw 1 jogger out, and 1 walker!!! No thanks. Leftover scalloped potatoes and ham was so good last night. Probably as good as your leftovers! DD1 had the surgery, and also works for the school system. DD2 is the one that seems to be chronically sick, and works at the promotional design company.
Marsha, glad to hear about your Seder going so good. The other night I watched most of the video that Jason Alexander hosted, with other actors, and others, which was a comedy about Seder. It was so good and funny, but ran long, and as it was after 10 pm when I found it, I couldn't finish it. But it was also very enlightening. Do you have a sewing machine, to make the masks? My DD got us some from a woman that is making them, and we each wore it out on Saturday, so I washed them Sunday and was not happy how they turned out. About the cough, she said they are saying it is bronchitis returning. Very interesting about that cough going around. I know that a couple weeks ago DH had it pretty good too. He is such a big baby when sick I sure do not want that to return to him!!
Carol, I am starting to doubt the wearing of masks, there are so many conflicting stories about them. Then last night I was reading horror stories about grocery shopping now a days, with me going there sometime today, I am almost afraid! But every time I do online ordering, I keep having missing things, with no warning that they do not have it, so I am left scrambling. So I am going today to try and finish the shopping from last week. The stories I am hearing are about the senior citizens shopping time and how rude all the seniors are. I talked to my brother, who is still down in AZ, and the stories he was telling me! So many people down there not doing the social distancing, and he is being quite vocal to these people, he has me laughing so hard!!! I guess that is what we should be doing; speaking up to people, when we see them hauling their whole families into the store, not distancing, things like that. We do not want to be holed up forever!
Anngie yikes on your winds!! Hope you didn't loose power because of it. That is one of the things they had warned us might happen, this past Sunday, but we were fine. Speaking of WM, I decided to see yesterday, if I could get most of what I need now, online at WM. At the checkout, it came down to; I could get certain things yesterday, with curb side pickup, some things today, as curb side pick up, and 1 other thing, at the store, tomorrow!!!! Well if that isn't crazy, I don't know what is! I cancelled the order, and will go today to one of our larger stores, closer to us. Fingers crossed I find what I need. DD is calling what she has, as the bronchitis that she had, returning, also, they still won't test her for the virus.
Pinky, yes, I am just like you when it comes to fishing boating. Thank you, about my DD, I have not heard anything recent, about her job, I am curious how they took it, that she could not come into work. I can't imagine them being happy. I do not sew either, so that is why I was happy that DD got me a few. Those are the tie masks, I wish it could have been the elastic ones, but I guess elastic is hard to find.
Got my check in the mail from my DB yesterday. I called to thank him for it, and he was so nice, he thanked DH and I for getting that money in the first place. He is so funny to talk to, he has a comical take on all this that is happening, such as the seniors going shopping, and all the people that can not figure out how to social distance. I had heard that the price of gas around here has gone down below $1.00, and he was shocked to hear that, as there in AZ the price is still over $2.00!!!
Lots to do today, as DH has a skype doctor apt follow up with his back surgery doctor or PA. Then we have running to do, with the checks going to the CU, then the store, then the pharmacy. Will need to put the bird feeders back out, as we took them down in the high winds yesterday.
Have a nice day everyone, and stay safe.

Good Morning----cold start here too, but it does look like the sky will be blue. Still a little windy but not at all like yesterday. I heard Montana has a winter storm warning going on there---we could have showers tomorrow again but nothing said about snow---keeping my fingers crossed.
Karen---glad you received your check. Sounds like your DB was very happy to share---I like that!!! Hope your DD feels better soon, they must be pretty sure of her having bronchitis. Stay safe on your outings today---nice to get out but scary too. I am thinking I am going to go to a little town about 12 miles away tomorrow to pick up groceries, I go to that store quite often. This town is our county seat and I am feeling pretty safe in going and I will go inside. We have had 1 positive case in our county and that person has recovered about a week ago so I feel pretty safe in going there. They have shields put up and wearing masks I understand so think that is the way to go. That way I can pick what I want if something is missing.
As I mentioned to Karen about shopping in the nearby town----the two towns/cities that I would go to normally for Hyvee each have in the teens amount of positive cases so I just feel safer going to the little grocery store. Not sure if you have all heard in the news about the huge number of positive cases in the county where Sioux Falls is. Smithfield is a pork plant located in Sioux Falls and they have over 200 cases just in this plant so they have been forced to shut down. Sioux Falls has over 400 cases total and over 1/2 are just at that plant. Makes me wonder how many of these workers have been out and about and that is why so many others have contacted it as well. The county statistics overall at Sioux Falls has been growing by leaps and bounds this past week. Surely not going to Sioux Falls anytime soon. SD really would not have many cases if it were not for that situation there. I do think a lot of Mexicans and others with low income situations work there and many probably live together so we wonder how many more cases will show up yet. They have also been announcing that in Sioux Falls at 2 different Walmart sites there has been 1 employee at each site that has tested positive. Anyway they have noted the dates these employees have worked and if you visited the store any of those days you should be alert to the situation. With so many workers at Smithfield no doubt many of these workers have been at WM or other businesses so very worried how much worse this can get down there.
I have been listening some to What Happens in Paradise but just can't really get into listening and reading right now. I wish I could shake that as I have so many in audio that are ready for me or soon ready---Hidden Valley Road, American Dirt, and I let Giver of the Stars go back as I see it was in ebook form and not audio. Looks like I am #1 and 2 on several more so yes the flurry of books is here again and I am not in the mood.
Have a great day friends---stay safe and healthy!!!! And Robin---I am just so dang excited for you, Congratulations again!!

Karen - I do have a sewing machine. Before kids I used to do a fair amount of sewing, when dh was in sales and traveling all the time I liked to have projects to do. Of course that was before we all had iphones and cable to suck up our time. When ds was little I sewed Halloween costumes, but when dd was little I realized sewing was more expensive than buying and I haven't done much sewing since. I want to make a few masks but I don't want to have to order materials and pay shipping so I'm using some scrap Packer fabric from when I made a bandanna for the dog before Mitzi. That's all I have that will work. And I don't think my sewing machine is working the way it used to. I guess that's what happens when you don't maintain it for years and years. Probably needs to be oiled. and I think some electronics may be shot. It wasn't zig-zagging when it was set to zig-zag. We watched about half of that Jason Alexander seder. It was funny but got long.
I agree it's not a good idea to haul the whole family to the grocery store, but since the kids are stuck home from school some people may not have a choice but to bring them with. Not like they can call a babysitter.
Pinky- I don't think it would be possible to be 6' apart in a meat processing plant so I'm not surprised it spread so quickly. There was a kosher chicken processor that shut down for 2 weeks after they detected the virus there. I don't know if it reopened. Fortunately before Passover we placed a large meat order (as we usually do, nothing to do with the pandemic) so we are all set for a while.
BFF's brother's book is good. It's a thriller? set in the white house and Afghanistan. Maybe along the lines of a Jack Ryan type story. Called Sandblast by Alan Pessin. I'm almost halfway through and I'm ready to recommend it. It's probably not available in the library as it just came out and he's a new author. I recommended it to our library.
I'm making cauliflower crust pizza for dinner. I haven't made a cauliflower crust in a long time so I hope it comes out, and I have to make pizza sauce. Anyone have an easy pizza sauce recipe? I usually use the canned stuff.

Been busy all morning so time now for a break. Another cold, blustery day but at least the sun is shining. I don't sew and all we have is a half dozen disposable ones. I'm wondering though if they couldn't be reused if they were put somewhere and not touched for maybe a week or so or lay them in a sunny place to sanitize them.
Karen, you have me hungry now for scalloped potatoes. Will you share your recipe? I've never liked fishing but I do love to be out on a boat. Not a fishing boat though! It's so relaxing to cruise on the Mississippi on my sister's pontoon. Such beautiful scenery.
Robin, I'm anxious to see pictures of that new baby. Not as anxious as you must be to see and hold that precious bundle.

I've heard stories about the seniors shopping, too. Rude to the store employees and to each other. Do people really think being rude to the store workers is going to get them better service?
It's 43 degrees, but, again, no rain or winds. Part of Oklahoma north of us had a chance of snow and sleet. I haven't heard if they got some or not. Terrible about the tornadoes over the weekend. I can' imagine trying to deal with that and all the Covid19 restrictions.
Robin, I love your grandbaby's name.
I used to sew quite a bit. My mother made sure my sisters and I learned how to sew so we were sent to the Singer Sewing Center for lessons. I remember making Halloween costumes and made dresses for DD when she was younger. There are fewer place to find fabric these days. Back in the day even the department stores like Pennys and Sears had fabric. I found some elastic and I think I have some fabric I could use for a mask. I just may get out my machine and try though my machine needs a good cleaning.

Sunny but cold and windy. What happened to spring? Yesterday wasn’t nearly as windy as they predicted. I’m getting a little tired of listening to the weatherman always predicting “the sky is falling”, when they really don’t a a clue.
Karen, congrats on the check! No one more deserving than you! Our gas has been dropping too, but it’s creeping back up. No surprise there. How is DD doing with her weight loss?
Pinky, correct me if I’m wrong, but is Smithfield the company that was sold to China? I thought I just read something on them - or similar company. Whoever it is, they raise the animals here still, shipped to China to be slaughtered or packaged or both and then the meat is shipped back to the US to be sold. The packaging reads “raised in the US”. Of course, I realize one can’t believe everything one reads on FB!
Marsha, how is Mitzi doing theses days?
Gareth, isn’t there a cruise boat that travels down the Mississippi River?
Carol, a friend of mine has gone to the grocery store @ 6am and said never again. I asked her why and she said the seniors just don’t get the concept of one way aisles or distancing. I had to laugh although I realize it really isn’t all that funny.
I’m reading Little Fires Everywhere and can’t seem to get into it. For those who have read it - does it get better?
Has anyone read Barbara Taylor Bradford? She has a series (which I don’t usually get into) starting with A Woman of Substance. Has anyone read that particular book or more in the series?

Busy day here, I did get one thing accomplished, finishing up something for the accountant that I really started a few weeks ago. This is very good for us though, I often get it to her around October 1st.
Madison, or Maddie as she is going to be called, is home safe and sound, with the baby nurse. They needed to get a substitution at the last minute, but by a stroke of luck, they have someone great who is costing them less than the original one. They walked the baby home from the hospital, but remember, in Manhattan a 1/2 mile walk is like you went around the corner. It is not unusually for people to walk a few miles in Manhattan, and now with people not wanting to use Uber, if they need to go somewhere, they can easily walk 1 mile. I walk a mile easily if I am in the city. It's a beautiful day today, we are done with the bad weather from yesterday, rain and very high winds.
I will post a picture on Facebook as soon as I am given the OK. DH did it and they were not happy.
Pinky, the big problem in NY is the areas were there is a large immigrant population. They come from places where they often live a few families to a household, so that is what they do here. We don't have that many Mexicans, but plenty from Central America, and the Carribean. That was one of the things that annoyed me about the book The Nest, they said something about the Mexican neighborhood in the Bronx, that is just not what someone here would say. Dominican neighborhood, yes, but not Mexican. It is smart of you to limit yourself to your smaller local store, that is what I am doing. I know fewer people have it around here, but going to other areas is not as safe.
Marsha, I have never made a cauliflower crust pizza. I once ordered a box of 6 cauliflower crusts online, and they had little bugs in them, so that did away with that experiment.
Karen, I think if I saw a station selling gas for under $1 I would get out and take a picture. Not happening here. I have to take a look how much it is, I haven't noticed. The thing about masks is it is not protecting you, it is protecting the other person. My smaller grocery store is not letting people in without a mask and gloves, and they are handing them out if you show up without them. They also are only allowing a certain number of people into the store, but so far I have only had to wait a very short time to get in.

Robin- my mother's former next door neighbors had a baby a week ago. I was surprised today to receive pictures of my mother holding the baby. I didn't think they were going to bring the baby over to see my mother for 2 weeks, apparently that wasn't the case. But they are in AZ and their governor did not issue a stay safe at home order until well after ours did. By the time I got the pictures it was too late to say anything about it so I'm keeping quiet. the baby is gorgeous. And get this - her name is Mattie! Costco has a very good cauliflower crust veggie pizza which we've been buying. I'm making the attempt because it is Passover and we are desperate for something not meat and potatoes for dinner.

I finally posted pictures on Facebook. After my DDIL napped today, she posted, so I was able to. I am going to put some more into my Facebook photos. I think I can do that without posting them all.
Marsha, I will have to look for those Costco ones. DH rejoined Costco, but I never got a card. I am certainly not going there now to get one.
Karen, I only passed one gas station today, and the regular was $2.09. I am sure if I go around enough I will find one for under $2 which will be as low as I have seen it in years.
I just realized I should probably get gas tomorrow. I shopped for some things for DS. They forgot that they needed food for the nurse. I am going to drive in tomorrow morning and drop it off. If I am lucky, I will get a look at the baby. I have to time it right. I should be able to make the round trip in an hour.
Here is a funny thing I heard today, you used to say you would not touch someone with a 10 foot pole, now that's the only way you can do it.
