Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read.Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Today is to be our best day of the week, with sunny skies, temp to aprox 61, light winds. Then our week gets not so nice.
I hope you all check yesterday's post, as I checked in during the afternoon. So I will start off with Robin, as she was the only one I missed yesterday. Robin, how nice of you to volunteer for dinner for a group! Do they give you some kind of aprox head count to follow, such as you know you are making dinner for so many people? That must be a big under taking. Then you have to haul it all over to where it needs to go. Yes, DH did not shoot a turkey, he was too busy falling down, in the woods. He really needs to stay out of there, I guess men just can't get it into their heads that they are not in the best shape to be rooting around in thick woods, with so many things you can't see, that can trip you up. Thank goodness he is doing hunting now, till fall. I wish he would just give it up totally. Lol, I know...I do not mind at all, him going fishing!!! Then while he is gone today, I can finish my cleaning, and take a walk outside.
Hi to all.
DD2 is trying to set us all up with Zoom to do a virtual happy hour possibly this Friday. I told her, when she asked if we would want to participate, that we should have everyone on this, that we would invite to the 6' party, then we could plan it while doing the cocktail hour. She has not replied yet. She still has to hash that all over with her DH. As it certainly looks like our state will be locked down till the 26th, the date the Governor mandated, and possibly longer, maybe all of June, we have to start looking at ways to work around that, without getting into trouble. And with the dire warnings that more people could die this summer, I do not want DH and I to be part of those numbers.
So do any of you ladies have any experience with wigs, that you could pass along? I have my mind set on getting one, but as I was googling them yesterday, I see there is not so much human hair wigs advertised, as synthetic wigs. Wow....I would have thought human hair wigs would be in more demand than synthetic. I am also thinking of a pixie cut wig, to stick to mainly the way I wear my hair. There are some good web sites out there, I even found one showing you how to measure your head, to see what size it is! I can order one online, now, but I would rather go to a shop and have some hands on help with it.
We had an oriole land on our feeding station yesterday. We do not have an oriole feeder, so now DH wants one. I think the bird is just passing through. We shall see how this turns out.
Have a nice day everyone. Most likely I will stop in later today, again.

Beautiful, sunny morning after all the rain yesterday. Such a nice morning for my walk. It's another busy day working from home. Then I'll have a couple of days off.
Karen, I wouldn't like a wig since I can't stand anything on my head. I'm sure when it comes to wigs you get what you pay for not that you'd need the most expensive. I just wouldn’t buy the cheapest.
Waving hi to everyone. Gotta get ready for work...

Robin - ds' training consists of 9 weeks of studying and test taking. That may go longer as testing centers are not operating at full capacity. His next test should be 30 days after the first one but he can't get an appointment until August, meanwhile he will study and keep checking for an earlier test time. After the tests there is office time and some period of time - 2 months? - where he shadows someone. Then I think they cut him loose to develop a business. so about 20 weeks of training before he is expected to start selling. Why not order several small baby toys from Target to have in the house and take one with you every time you go to visit dgd?
Karen - sorry, no experience with wigs.
Gareth - have a nice day.
Not much going on here. DH didn't go to the grocery store yesterday so I had to look through my 2 week dinner menu to find something I had the ingredients for and ended up with fried rice which was toward the bottom of the list. He said he'll go today. If he doesn't we'll have leftovers. There is fried rice and I noticed some Mexican lasagna in the back of the fridge. But he has to go by tomorrow. He also wants to go to Costco as he is out of the sandwich rolls he likes and he will try to get more tuna as they limited him to one last time. A friend of mine in Detroit said she got a huge bag of yeast at Costco for the price we pay for a small bottle so I asked him to pick that up if he sees it. I'll freeze it and have it for a long time. I don't bake bread like I used to anymore but with dd home sometimes I do, plus I use it for pizza crust.

Just a quick check in---A sunny but cool morning after a little over an inch of rain yesterday. I'm sure it is to yet to go in the field for our farmers still planting but guessing it will be busy with guys wanting to pick up so they are ready when it is dry enough. Although it does sound like rain tomorow again so who knows.
Karen--I know nothing about wigs, but I think I would be like Gareth as I hate things on my head too. DH always gives me a bad time about not wearing a stocking hat when it is so cold out. It just makes my head itch---I will pull up my hood if it is windy but I don't like that either. I am worried about your DH---hope he decides to check things out sooner than later. Hoping your DD1 feels better today.
Gareth---Hi--thought of you when I put my sheets in the wash this morning. Just waiting for the dryer to beep and put the bed back together. Hoping that can be done before a customer stops by.
Hi to everyone---!!!

It's a little cooler today. Tomorrow it should be in the low 80s, then Friday down to the sixties again with a chance of rain. Friday and Saturday the lows should be back in the 40s.
Not much going on here either. DH went in to work today, but shouldn't have to the rest of the week. I need to go through the frig and pantry and make a grocery list. I'm going to try to do a menu plan so I have everything I need. I know this is the way to go because I hate having something in mind to fix then find out I'm missing some ingredient or another.
From what I've heard, wigs make your head hot. I'm sure you could google them and find out more about them. Thinking about it, I don't wear hats much at all. I use the hood on my jackets when it is raining. We get snow so seldom that I don't have a hat to wear when it does.
I don't think the licensing board for hairdressers is going to go around checking for people breaking the rules about having shops in their home, but there are people petty enough to report people about that. Hair and nail salons are supposed to reopen on Friday. The woman I know who went to Oklahoma for a mani/pedi needed it for her DD's wedding. She figured the Texas places would be too busy this weekend. I think they are having a small family wedding. I know several people have done that and plan to have a reception later on in the summer.
I don't know if I could stand being physically close to GDS without being able to touch him. I think we will stick to facetime.

Well, my hair appointment is for this afternoon and I’m going. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I don’t have any experience with wigs, either, but I think I’d first try a hands-on experience, though. The thing is I don’t know where one goes to try one on. They’ve got to be out there, though, because some chemo patients will choose to wear a wig. Robin, we live in a county just outside the “Capital district”. However, the doctor I will see for my procedure does them in two counties that have not yet “opened”. It’s a large medical conglomerate called Ortho NY. I’ll hear next week if it’s postponed for the third time.
Just started a new book called The Duchess by Jude Deveraux. It’ll be a nice, easy read especially after Normal People.

My hairdresser just called and she has started making appointments so I will go next week. Yay! She said the state is supposed to issue guidelines for them tomorrow or Friday. She is only doing 1 appointment in the morning and 1 in afternoon and wipes everything down between appointments. I never thought I would ever be so happy about a hair cut.
Our county's numbers of positive cases are going up. They think it is because more testing is being done rather than relaxing some of the restrictions.

Karen, I will bet that only you are seeing the thinning hair, or it is just like other people's. I always had thin hair, but when my hair is freshly washed and combed out will, it does not look as thin as it sometimes does. The picture DS took of me from above holding the baby showed so much of a part in my hair that it looked like I had gray growing in, which I don't. It is so hard to figure out exactly what to do with this whole COVID19 thing, go out, not go out, see people safely, who knows.
Anngie, I hope you get to have that appointment sooner rather than later.
Marsha, I hope your DH goes shopping today. Good luck to your DS on getting started in that business, but there is no time better for him than now, when he is young, even with the new house.
Pinky, I forgot to ask you yesterday, does your DH ride a horse also when he works with the cattle, or do they do it all in trucks and things like that?
Carol, glad you are going to have your haircut. I think you are right about more testing being done, but opening up too early can be a problem too, especially when they are seeing that with more testing, there are more cases.
In our county they are saying that the number of cases is going up faster than they would like, but then they say it is in the black and hispanic communities. I will admit, our county is rather segregated, but more so economically than anything else, but that's the way it is. There is one town near me that has a high percentage, mean 4% total, however that is where there is a nursing home that has a lot of cases, and the community itself is small. There is also a garden apartment complex there and an apartment house, so I guess more cases in a smaller area.
Karen, the group home has 9 residents, and 2 staff members. I was thinking it was 7, so thought I would use 4 lbs of meat, but it is 9, so not sure if that would be enough. I have a package with 5 lbs of meat, but I was going to use some of that for us. What does everyone think? I know that I have even had left over making a 1 lb meatloaf for the 2 of us. So maybe the 4 would be good, and I can stick with my plan. I usually add less breadcrumbs, but could add more, so that it holds together better too I suppose. It really is not that much I am bringing over. I am thinking maybe I will bring them some cans of corn too, if they think that what I have isn't enough. The cookie tray has plenty of the big cookies in it, and they may not want them to have more than one.

Robin - isn't the rule of thumb 1/4 pound ground beef/serving? what kind of residents? If they are senior citizens they will eat less, if it is a group home for young strong but disabled, they might eat more. And men vs. women. I can't remember what else you said you were sending, but that would make a difference, too. Bringing the corn is a good idea and they can use it if they think they need more food. Or even just add a loaf of bread to eat with their meal.
DH went to the grocery store, got home just before I was leaving to come back to work after lunch so I was able to put the shopping away. He got most of what was on the list. He's thinking about Costco this afternoon. If not he will probably go there tomorrow.

Marsha, the home is run by AHRC, which is no longer politically correct, but originally stood for The Association for the Help of Retarded Children. When group homes first started, they opened them. My mother had a friend who's son was a resident in one of their first ones, I have no idea if he is still alive or not, but must be about my age, and started living there close to 50 years ago. The woman who I am in touch with about this has a brother who has been in this home for 34 years, so I would imagine he is in his 50's. Most often they do not have mixed sexes in these homes, so I would imagine they are other men, although I have no idea of the ages. That was why I was thinking of more than 4 ounces, and I never really think that is enough anyway. I think a package of rolls would be a good idea to add. I am stopping on my way home for some more things, so will get that too. The bread shelves are pretty sparse, but there should be some kind of rolls. That is something they can always use too.

Rolls or a loaf or two of Italian bread? And/or one of those pre-shredded bags of cabbage to quickly make coleslaw?
I’m back from my hair appointment and it all went well. No one else was there and wouldn’t be until 5pm. I was home by 3:30. I made another appointment but who knows if it’ll be at the shop or her house again. According to her, there will be changes made - such as literally no waiting room, no magazines or coffee, and can’t come early or will be waiting in our cars. What she doesn’t know is for how long will this be. There will be inspections as well. Life is changing!

Robin - if it's all men then 1/4 pound/person is not enough.
Anngie - the pre-shredded bag of cabbage is one of the things dh was not able to find at the grocery store! I wanted it for fish tacos. he got broccoli slaw. Should work.
My mother's stylist called to tell her the salon is opening but she is not going back to work yet. The salon is not allowing anyone to wait in the waiting area, they must wait outside in their cars. My mother and my aunt go together and they don't drive so they get dropped off and one sits and waits. I don't know how they would manage, especially now that a taxi is a really bad idea. Also the stylist said she has to clean her station between clients, although honestly I would expect that they should have been doing that all along. How hard is it to give the sink a spritz and wipe it down?

I was thinking of bagged salad, but decided that would be hard. They can put the bag of string beans in the microwave, but I don't think they do cooking, so not making cole slaw. I bought cans of corn. They did not have any dinner rolls. We only eat bread if we are at a restaurant, so I didn't know if buying a loaf of bread made sense. I was thinking of stopping tomorrow morning, but we are doing another Zoom networking, so don't have time to do that. I think my original plan of the 4 lbs of meat is fine, that's about 6 ounces per person, so should be fine, especially with the other things. If they think it's not enough, they will use the corn, otherwise, I am sure they will just hold onto that. I looked again and there are 24 of the jumbo cookies like they have at all these places, Costco, and I am sure Sam's too.
