Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read.Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Not too chilly, 42. Pure blue skies, but it won't get warm. Looking for a high of 55.
Gareth, it was nice to be out walking yesterday, but of course there was a wind, but not bad till a little later. Not sure about today though. And they are talking frost for the next few nights. I agree, about having something on your head, for awhile at the house I was wearing a cap when walking, then I lost the hat. But yeah, it would take some getting used to, having that on my head. But between real and synthetic, that is what I would need to find out, which is better. I have been reading things on line. Of course you can order online, they even show you how to measure your head, to find your size. But this is something I want to do in a wig store.
Marsha, your poor DS, sounds like he has a way to go to be on his own! Sounds interesting, how the Governor will let the beauty salons open up, if and when we get that far, if it is anything like your mother's state, or Carol's. I am going to go back to the one up in Abrams, as I did not like the cut I got at that place my DH goes, so I am sure I will be a low man on the totem pole, as to when I will get in, as I did not have a appointment scheduled there. And if it is like how Carol's is, it will take forever to get to the point of taking new customers.
Pinky, I used to not like things on my head, but as us women in the family started doing the big hats at certain parties, I found they are not bad at all. And from how they have the nylon caps to go over your hair, to put the wig on, I think the wig may fit so well you don't notice it is on. (That is what I am going to believe in, lol) I really like the wigs out there, for older women. Of course I would stick with styles close to mine, but they would look fuller. I am shocked at how thin my hair is now. Lol, I too did bed sheets yesterday morning.
Carol, I would prefer your cooler temps, than ours. Tomorrow our high is to be 42! Brrr!!! But yet, if and when we go somewhere tomorrow, we will see people out jogging/walking, in that chilly weather. I am a fair weather fan, it has to be warmer than that, and normally with no wind. I have googled wigs, and by doing that, I learned a lot about them. There are some styles I am really interested in, such as the pixie cut for women our age. I have no interest in long hair wigs. That would be too drastic. I look at the pictures and wonder if the wig has to be styled all the time, or if it keeps the style, pretty much. We saw our grand kids a few weeks ago, and yes, it was so hard not to hug them! It is easier to stay away, than see them and not get a hug.
Anngie, I won't mind waiting in my car, for my hair apt. Did you have to wear a mask? I wouldn't mind that either, it is what it is. I saw that the Indian reservation, which is very close to us, extended their Safer at home till June 11th, so I have a feeling our Governor will do something like that also, so I guess I better get my courage up and try to trim my bangs, they are so bad. Our state is closed till May 26th, so even if he opens then my hair is in tough shape. I am reading so many comments, in the evening against this 2nd mandate, that it is against this, and against that, it makes your head swim. I am starting to lean towards letting businesses open, if they want to take that chance, let them. Then we have to decide if we want to take a chance and go out there, and risk it. I think it should have been that way for awhile, instead of leaving everything closed so long, and people loosing their business. I understand that in the beginning is what about not overwhelming the hospital systems, but you don't even hear of that anymore, the state governments are looking at not spreading it, which is unreal.
Robin, I know what I am seeing, and it isn't good. Way too many open spots, where you can see scalp. I would cringe when I saw women with hair like that, I am not going to be one of those. I have seen so many women wearing wigs, and they seem so normal, like there is nothing on their head. I think they must make them really light weight. I just wish those wigs shops could be open now, so I could get started checking them out. Your figuring of the food for those lucky people sounds pretty exact. What Marsha mentioned is what we go according to when have a bigger sized party. I think otherwise, you have all the bases covered. When did you say you are dropping the food off? Good for you for doing this!
Wow, I am dragging. Could not get to sleep till after 3 am. Then of course my body wakes up automatically at around the same time everyday, so I am up and half asleep. I am glad we really don't have anything to do, but run to go scripts from the pharmacy. I have all the house work done, yay! Going to take chili out of the freezer for our dinner tonight so that is easy.
Have a nice day everyone.

Beautiful, sunny start to the day. 50's now but will be in the high 60's later. I'm waiting to walk with DH later morning. Freeze warning for tomorrow night. 30º predicted.
The Tyson plant here reopened today. I see the opening was even covered on the Today show this morning. Our governor is reopening more of the state starting here today. It won't change anything for me though as I don't plan on going anywhere for quite awhile unless it's for groceries. I will venture out for a haircut though as soon as I'm able to! I'll feel safe there as I know they'll have plenty of safeguards in place.
Karen, a wig is something I wouldn't order online either. I'd want it professionally fit and their advice as to style and color etc.
I gave up on Too Close and returned it yesterday. Now I've started a Kristin Higgens book Life And Other Inconveniences. Anyone read it?

If the point to opening up the state is to promote the economy, why are the state parks and beaches the first thing that opens?
If I have to reschedule my haircut again I'm going to change it to cut and color. In fact, I'm thinking of sending him a text and telling him to reschedule me with a cut and color. At this point he wouldn't be able to get me in for that until the end of June anyway. Right now I have a haircut June 2. I'm fairly ok with not getting the cut as my bangs are now pretty much gone and my bob is now shoulder length but still a bob so it's ok. So glad I don't have short hair anymore. That must be tough.
I just ordered 10 more masks for my employees. The 10 then 10 more that I put out are gone. My friend was originally just making them for friends and for some health care organization to keep herself busy and not charging but I told her we would pay. I feel pretty good about being able to put a few hundred unexpected dollars in her pocket.
The fabric finally for the baby blanket I'm making for my mother's former neighbor. They leave AZ for Colorado every summer so I texted her to see when she is leaving, and turns out they are leaving on the 15th. I will have just enough time to make the blanket and ship it to her. I'll make it this weekend and send it Monday fedex.

Oh yeah - we are about books - I finished News of the World. The writing is beautiful but I didn't love the book. I started The Things We Cannot Say this morning over breakfast. So far I like it.

Karen, I agree that I would want to go to a store to get a wig. My DDIL's DGM, I found out, wears a wig. I thought her hair looked so much like her DD's that it must be natural. It turns out it is not, but it looks great. I have no idea how it feels on though.
Gareth, we used to watch the Today show but not any more, so didn't see that story, but I am sure I will hear about it later. I hope it doesn't keep things spreading by you.
Marsha, I think employers should be out masks for their employees. Nice of you to offer to pay the person who makes them.
Today it's a nice day here and it will get into the 60's, but tomorrow we will have rain again. Which doesn't always mean rain all day. It's actually good for the lawn, and I have not turned on our sprinklers for the season yet. Not sure what is happening to my seeds I planted. It is hard to get the right amount of water on them, and I might be letting them dry up to much, so it might be a total failure. We'll see.

Robin - our purchasing person has been trying to get the disposable masks since this whole thing began. She told me yesterday she spends about 1/2 hour every day trying to find someone who has them and has not found any yet. We don't require masks to be worn here but we put out the masks for people to take home and use when they go shopping or whatever.

Marsha, interesting because plenty of stores around here sell them. I think I have even seen them on Amazon. I am surprised they don't make people wear them to work. If one worker is a carrier, they can give it to the others.

Perhaps you are seeing the difference between what is available in New York and what is available in Wisconsin.

Windy and cool here but at least it’s sunny. Guess what - flurries Friday night!
Karen, would it be possible to contact a cancer center and ask if they have a contact they could give for wigs? I went to my appointment wearing a mask but removed it so she could apply the hair dye. I felt perfectly safe while there. I’m so glad she made the offer. Most of her customers and friends she didn’t even call. I’m so appreciative I’m thinking about picking up a small gift card and sending it to her.
Gareth, what do the majority of people in your area think of the plant reopening?
Marsha, have you made many quilts over the years?
Robin, OMG did you read where there were 4,900 more nursing home deaths due to partly/mostly bringing in Covid-19 positive patients? According to the report, the governor was specifically asked if they could be moved out and he refused the request. AND if that’s not enough, just to thank all the medical people coming from other states to help in this emergency, he’s going to look into deducting income tax from them!
So far The Duchess by Jude Deveraux is pretty good.

Anngie - I have made this particular baby quilt 3 times (that I can remember) as a gift. someone gave me a quilt when dd was born and I loved it - it was simple enough that I didn't mind using it, didn't worry about ruining it, it was washable, when she was an infant I put it on the floor for her to lie on, when she got bigger I covered her with it, when she was a little girl it was her security blankie. I got so much use out of it that it became my go-to baby gift. It's not a patched/quilted thing. I use 2 pieces of complimentary flannel and some batting. I sew it all together, put some ties in to hold the quilt in place, sometimes I embroider the baby's name or initials in a corner, and send it with a card that tells why I think it's special and I hope the recipient thinks it's special too. I got some beautiful handmade things when my kids were babies that I never wanted to use because I didn't want to ruin them. This is something eminently useable.

Hello Friends---drying up some around here but cloudy again today. We have been rather busy today but not crazy busy---LOL!!! Just doing some catch up things and I just get started and I need to help someone or answer the phone and take care of something else. I am so ready for a Just Me day!!!
On the wig topic--I too would find a local place to shop for one and one that comes well recommended so they can help you decide what is best for you. When I think about it Dolly Parton supposedly wears a wig always and in different styles. With her performing it must not get to unbearably hot or I wouldn't think she would like it. I suppose with all of her money she can afford to get whatever she wants. Who knows she maybe wears one and then throws it away if it gets mussed. I have always heard she wears one because she thinks it is a waste of time to fix your hair everyday. \
I see I have to go---Have a nice day everyone!

It's a pretty day in the 70s, but windy. We may get rain later this evening.
Anngie, I'm glad your hair appointment went well. My DD wasn't too happy with me when I told her I was going to get a cut next week. I told her my hairdresser is only doing 2 people a day and cleans between appointments. I have short hair and I'm at the shaggy stage and it bothers me. Talking about wigs reminds me of a woman at church. For years she wore her hair in the same style. It was long, but she wore it in a kind of bun and had worn in that way for a long time. She works in a doctor's office and I went and she had a bob, but it is a wig. I don't know if she has some kind of problem with really thin hair or what, but it was strange seeing the change. She's around my age. One of the cashiers at Walmart has really thin hair on top. I think I would get a wig if mine got like that.
I went to Walmart again this morning. Like last week, it was not crowded. Most of the older customers had masks, but some of the younger shoppers did not. They were low on household cleaners, but had plenty of paper products. There was one whole section of the freezer section that was completely empty. I'm not sure what is usually there, maybe fruit and some vegetables. They had more bread than last week. Again like last week, there was not a line to check out which was nice.
Facetimed with DGS yesterday afternoon. He had fallen at daycare and had a bruise. Sometimes they put him in the high chair and give him a snack and hold the phone is front of him so he can see us and not walk off.
I saw where there were so many nursing home deaths in NY. I'm afraid that is going to happen here. Our county has a really large population of older people and we have many nursing and assisted living facilities. One nursing home in the next county has almost 100 patients and employees test positive which is lot considering the small size of the town and it is only one facility. Also, they finally admitted some employees of Tyson have tested positive. I don't remember the number
I found some fabric, but haven't gotten around to trying to make a mask.

As far as the nursing home deaths go, as you probably realize Anngie, people are only in nursing homes if they are very fragile, so there would be more deaths. Also, most people who work in nursing homes come from the communities that are the hardest hit, although I do have 2 friends who's sisters work in nursing homes. I am not sure what those who are against it expect, should the people stay in their homes, when they may need nursing care, but not hospital care? What many nursing homes can do is segregate the Covid patients. I have heard that with some they have moved patients from one nursing home to another so that there was a Covid nursing home, and a non-covid, but not sure how that can happen when it is a private business, which most of them are. I don't think there is a right answer to this, and there is no reason why this should become political, which is what is happening.
I have not gone to Target for almost 2 months, and they may have more of the paper goods than my local supermarket. I can buy brands that I don't like, but seeing as they are all charging a lot for it, I will wait until I am really desperate unless I find the brand I use.
Marsha, I keep forgetting to comment about News of the World. I had read it for a book club. It was a short book, so I didn't mind reading it, but it is nothing I would ever pick up on my own.
I dropped the food off at the group home. We weren't very busy in the office, so I left on the early side so I had plenty of time to get it to them early. I am making mushroom ravioli for dinner. I had bought it, now will make a white wine sauce, and some salad. I don't have tomatoes, but I have radicchio and arugala from the salad I made last weekend for my friends.
