How good are on engaging your senses while eating?

How the food looks matters to me but some ways food is plated isn't appealing to me. I don't like a lot of the new ways. I don't have a great sense of smell but I love the smell of food although it doesn't trigger me. Taste of course matters but I tend to like bland food. Mouth feel/texture is very important to me. I love the crunch of my salad every night. I do know that using all of your sense when you eat leads to more satisfaction. Although I'm not that mindful with my eating that I pay attention to my sense all of the time.

Eating is and always has been a sensual pleasure for me. I am invariably and easily focused on the food, sight, smell, texture, taste, all of it. Eating with distractions does not distract me from the enjoyment of and engagement with the food. And, as I always say, I know I am not going to allow myself an unlimited amount or type of anything, so I darn well better enjoy it while I've got it.

I don't usually engage with the food UNLESS it is something I really REALLY want or it tastes really REALLY delicious. When I was in college mom and dad would come out, take me to Marie Callendar's and I would moan over the pie. A good meal at a restaurant (enchiladas or a burger) could also have me moaning. Cafeteria food was NOT as tasty!

I love the entire food experience from the rooter to the tooter. Colors, aromas, textures, temperature, proportion, plating; all of that matters to me. I’ve found that since I stopped smoking 10 years ago, foods are more satisfying because flavors seem more intense.

Loved Marie Callendar's when I lived in California. In the first part of the 1990's I would go from Connecticut to California to look after my father. We would go to Marie Callendar's and have the soup and corn bread for lunch and a piece of pie for dessert. There was also a Polly's Pies in the town where he lived for awhile and they also had good pies. When I started WW back in 2006 I did a calorie count of the meals I use to have at places like that and they came 2500-3000 calories. No wonder I was obese. When I was in California taking care of my father I deliberately overate to manage my moods. Towards the end of his life I gained 10 pounds in one month.

The potato cheese soup, tomato dressing on salad and cornbread slathered in honey butter were my favorites. Back then I weighed 140 and was decades younger so the weight gain did not happen. I do remember a trip to the USA, being there a month and having no check on my intake and coming home 10 pounds heavier from the calories eaten and imbibed. It came off in the first month home BUT it was an eye opener. I am not surprised on the calorie count!

I was a regular at Marie Calendar's. There was an old one in San Jose by the Century movie theaters that we would patronize. A Bob's Big Boy across the street. Yes, I was young and calories were not an issue. That one closed. There was another in Capitola by a huge shopping mall that was open for quite a bit longer, but it finally bit the dust years ago. I'm glad I ate junk while I could. So there.
