How do you handle emotions without resorting to eating?

When I get upset I usually don't think of eating. Things have been pretty mellow lately so I haven't had any emotional tumbles. The virus crisis hasn't gotten me eating.

Long ago and far away in decades long past I would bake...cookies, usually. That began to change over time to butter on tortillas or wine oor something else when I was upset. I still remember the day the US Embassy was bombed and a family working at the embassy were to come to dinner that night - mom was also visiting from the USA. Anyway...heard the boom, called the wife of the man working at the embassy, she could not talk as she was waiting to hear if he was okay (he died) and said they would not be able to make it. Mom found me with my nose in the fridge looking for something to eat or to bake even though I had made a meal for others and had dessert already made. Now it might be a glass of wine but not the sweets that call but as wine has similar less than nutritious calories I try to ask myself "why" then ask "will it help" and find something else to do if possible.

Baking used to be my go-to also. But nowadays itโs exercise or wine. If itโs not too late at night I call and chat with a friend. We usually joke about laugh about life and I end up smiling. My newest antidote is meditation.

By using the Beck tools, mostly. A lot of meditation and self-awareness. These days I'm more likely to think about having a drink than eating. But I don't do that either. So mature...
