Now the thugs are saying the elderly guy tripped. But the video shows he was pushed down by a thug.
I'm surprised they're not saying the video is a fake.
Disgraceful.

birdgal , it was both -but "if not for" the fact that the cop shoved him, he would not likely have tripped on his own. I was appalled by the fact that the cop that did it just looked back then walked on.

They initially claimed, right off the bat, that he tripped, then the video surfaced. Now they are saying he was a "major instigator" and was inciting the crowd to riot. You don't push him down and fracture his skull. The standard for using force is self defense, being in fear of your life, in my understanding.
DH makes me crazy. He operates from a bias towards law enforcement. We were watching the video and he said "the guy was poking him with his cell phone." So? So?! DH is a kind person as a rule, but it's like a switch flips in his head for these types of things. He is one of those people who say "if people just followed the police commands, if they weren't engaged in anything sketchy," and so on and so on, this behavior by the police wouldn't happen. Then he will complain that they show the victim's graduation picture and say "they make the guy look like an angel." What does that have to do with any f*king thing?
This is a guy (DH) who seeks out every educational program on PBS, history of Reconstruction, history of Asian Americans, he is passionately incensed about the genocide of Native Americans, and then he will pop off with these stupid statements. What is it with people? I have lived with him for 30+ years and I can't get him to get it. And he's not stupid. Grrrrr. And he gets along great with POC and always has. It's a puzzlement.

I've seen the video multiple times, and the main "pusher" was the fellow who started to check the 75 year old out and was pulled back by another officer. Not that that matters.

I've experienced obnoxious thugs in cop uniforms my whole life.
I've sat with women in the ER who had broken bones and black eyes from being beaten by a man who was much stronger than her.
The cops did nothing! Shrugged their shoulders and babbled something about a domestic dispute. That's just one example.
Nope. Not a fan. They don't like their job get another one.
Respect is a two way street. It also needs to be earned.

lani, I agree. 99% of police officers are fine, upstanding people who are there to help and enforce the law. The 1% that isn't "spoil the whole barrel" and the good cops are the ones out there trying to keep the peace. I can't even imagine trying to stay calm in the face of 100s of people screaming at you, name calling, threatening, etc. I would agree itās scary to be shouted at by hundreds but in many cases these were peaceful protests and the aggression by many many eyewitness accounts is that the aggression was instigated by the police. Instead of banging in the peaceful protests they should be quiet and observe. Be present to oversee but donāt be a dick for the sake of throwing your weight around. And if they see a bad actor then go after that person. Not the whole crowd of those there to genuinely protest and not cause harm to anyone

Lani the way you describe your husband is how Iād describe my BIL. My exās brother is very kind and gets along with everyone. My ex and his brother were born and raised in Queens NY and had friends that cover the whole spectrum. My BIL never finished university but loves to read and self teach about a wide range of global issues. My ex is university educated and Iāve watched the two debate many an issue and my BIL can match knowledge for knowledge with my ex. So heās extremely bright. However he too has a block against acknowledging the issues of race as it relates to police brutality and is a constant denier of systemic racism. My ex wonāt even discuss it with him because he doesnāt want to get sucked down a vortex. I have debated it with him and he literally doesnāt get it. He says growing up in Queens as a white man he was strong armed by the police just as much as a black person. I said yeah one difference. Youāre still alive to tell about it.

Some are total racist assholes. Some just lose the plot and do dumb stuff. On a somewhat unrelated topic, there was an incident yesterday a few miles away from me where a right-leaning tea party person (according to his FaceBook page) got armed up with home-made bombs, assault rifle. Someone saw the stuff in his car and reported it. The cops investigated and two got shot, one dead, one hit by shrapnel from an IED. The bad guy when apprehended said he was sick of police violence and brutality and was going to do something about it. So you never know who is going to do what. It was an unbeliveable big deal with 130 police vehicles from many districts, a bear cat (armored vehicle) eventually arriving. Helicopters overhead. Our BLM protest was cancelled due to the chaos. They will resume today. It is organized by our high school students. Go, kids. ETA: I am in a little, podunky city of 10,000. The pop. of the town in which it happened is 6000.

finreporter, see, Mr. Lani totally believes that there is systemic racism, he just gets this knee jerk reaction when police are involved. Too many Law & Order episodes? Not to make light of anything, but it's got to be some cultural influence in his subconscious. Also, he gets tired of the one-way narrative from both sides of the political divide. Since I tend to fall one way, he will play Devil's advocate for the other side.

luanne , Good one. How did you get it from Facebook to here? To get a pictured from Facebook to here what I have to go is click on the photo in FB to open it, then right click on the picture. Usually when I'm copying from FB I can just click "copy image" and then I can paste it. However with this site that doesn't work. So after I've right clicked I click on "View image information". Then I copy the address (the url). On this site click the little icon above for image and paste the url in there. That should copy the picture over.
