Thanks for the recommendations of MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN! I had thought about seeing it.
You mentioned PARASITE, Anne. I am so into Korean films now. Tonight I watched THE HANDMAIDEN, directed by Park Chan-wook and based on a lesbian love story set in Victorian London. This film version takes place in Korea in the 1930s. Warning: it does have some explicit love scenes between the two women and is in Korean and Japanese with English subtitles, so it may put most people off. It is ingeniously done. It reminds me of a Hitchcock film with twists and turns that no one could expect. There are three parts, each part from a different perspective and adding to the story. I want to see it again.

I had that on my list, Anne. Something to be said for light, uplifting and guilty pleasure. That is why I am watching CHEERS. And no, my new reading group has not started yet. The friend who has been a member of the group and I are ready and waiting. The leader does a lot of preparation for these books. I assume that is what is going on.

What platform is it on? I got a recommendation for Detective Montalbano, an Italian series, but I would have to pay an extra add on with Amazon. No way I am paying more for anthing right now. (I could get a free 7 day trial and try to binge it, but how much do you want to bet, you push one button for the free trial, while cancelling it will be super tricky.)

We started watching Coming Home, a movie version of the novel by Rosamond Pilcher. It was a favorite of my DDs so we thought the girls would enjoy it and we are all enjoying it. The story is set around the time of World War II. The main character's parents and younger sister are in Singapore and Judith, the older daughter is sent to a boarding school where she meets Lovejoy, the daughter of a wealthy family. Judith is integrated into their household. The girls are early teens when they mmet and the story continues through their marriages and the war. Good story for all ages. The movie has two DVDs and there is a follow up, Nanchero, which is the name of the estate Lovejoys family owns.

We own the DVDs of Coming Home and Nanchero. My girls watched them a couple of times a year for years! I would try the usual places, Amazon and Netflix.

Annesanse- Keep meaning to share with you. I also like Thrift Books. The books usually arrive in good to excellent shape, only one (so far) has arrived in "dump it" condition. Didn't look bad, but smelled to high heaven of mold. Was not taking any chances on keeping it in the house or donating it. Didn't want to send it back,I just absorbed the $$. $1.98 won't break the bank...lol And they are a great source for the books I have been wanting to read. lani, you got me started on the Mary Renault books. Thank you.

WOMEN IN LOVE (1969) I got this movie from my Amazon DVD by mail membership.
Two sisters are courted by two very different men in the D. H. Lawrence classic Women In Love. Gudren (Glenda Jackson) is pursued by Gerald (Oliver Reed) a tough coal miner, while sister Ursula (Jenny Linden) is wooed by the school inspector Rupert (Alan Bates). One couple enters into the union with timidity but their love endures with time. The other couple engages in a frenzied, lustful flesh feast eventually ending in tragedy. Both couples honeymoon together as love takes it's often rocky course. Hints of homosexuality arise when Gerald and Rupert have a wrestling match in their underwear. The act is implied rather than graphic There are the obligatory nude scenes that many films from this year seem compelled to present. Ken Russell won an Oscar for Best Director while Glenda Jackson won the Best Actress Award for her sublimely subdued performance.
I liked the film but hated the one sister, she was so rude and down right mean to the man she marries. Started out liking her but then the film went on.
'Now I have Parasite to watch tonight. It came today.
I love a hard cover book and a new one. always have. The smell of a library is awesome one of my favorite things to do. But then some of you already know that by my Reading Thread. Musty, moldy and smelling like cigarette smoke turns me off. I know they are not all like that and have tried thrift books by another name but was not impressed, Books are my one viceI am afraid and am very lucky to have 3 friends who feel the way I do and we share books.
I love old movies, the new ones usually don't interest me and when I find a good one I usually have to tell every one about it. LOL I don't get the comedy and don't like everything taking place in the dark. Like to see the room, the clothes etc. Can't even enjoy the dialogue, drives me nuts.

We have been enjoying the Prime offerings. They do change up regularly, don't they? DH is the movie scanner and picker. Last night we watched "If I Were You" which I thought was going to be a light romantic comedy, but was a tad heavier than light, but was an interesting thought-provoking plot. It starred Marcia Gay Harden who I haven't seen for a long time. One male actor we'd seen in a TV show and liked him there. "A woman tries to outwit her husband's sexy young mistress and achieves unexpected results." That's a line about the show. So, for something a little off the beaten path I recommend it.

Yes, Gail. It is British. The second DVD moves too quickly because there are so many plot lines to tie up. It is a good story and the book was wonderful. I love Rosamond Pilcher, love the Shell Seekers and all of her books. We haven't watched Nanchero, yet. We got into a heated game of Train Dominos last night. Oh, Connie, I would love to see Glenda Jackson and Alan Bates in Women in Love! If I Were You sounds good, too. We need to watch movies that teenage girls enjoy, too, at least for the summer. We have Joy Luck Club coming in the mail from Netflix. I have yet to see Parasite. We actually had it from Netflix, but DD said the girls wouldn't like it.She's not sure I would like it! Let us know what you think,Connie.
Any good ideas for family friendly movies are welcome!
Annavece: I just got a copy of Life in the Garden by Penelope Lively from Thrift Books and I swear it has never been read....$4.95!
