I just saw EDIE on Amazon Prime. It is about an 83 year old woman who was once, in her words, a 'wild child,' She used to have great adventures with her dad but married a controlling man for whom she was the caretaker for years after he had a stroke. He has passed and now she wants to climb a mountain in Scotland that her dad had pointed out to her. On the way she bumps into someone who is going to help her get there. At first for money, but later for friendship and because her persistence and bravery inspire him. The star is a Shakespeareab actress and she says more with her face and eyes than with the words she utters. The scenery is breathtaking. When I was going for my last degree my husband used to tell me to imagine myself climbing up a mountain, reaching the top and waving a flag. I think I will think of Edie from now on whenever I think a task I am facing is a difficult one.
The film did not get great reviews but it was perfect for me tonight. Slow moving, gorgeous vistas. I don't know if anyone else would enjoy it but I did.

I'm going to watch the 2019 version of LITTLE WOMEN tonight. Hope I am not going to hate it.

Connie: That film was filmed almost literally in my back yard; it was filmed near our farm and at Fruitlands in Harvard, MA where we visited often, beautiful spot. My youngest DD was married there. We haven't seen it yet so I will be interested to hear about your reaction.
We watched Rocketman for a second time last night....at least I did, others floated in and out of the room. I found it very moving and such a happy ending for Elton John to finally have a family that loves him for who he is.

I loved both LITTLE WOMEN and ROCKETMAN. Ann, I think you will enjoy the former. I like what the director did with the story, emphasizing even more the strength Jo had in the face of attitudes towards women. And such fun to see all of those places I knew well...not quite as well as you. Do let us know what you think, Connie!

I just saw a very different kind of movie. FRANCES HA. It is about a young woman in her late 20s, an aspiring dancer, who is kind of drifting in her life in general, and also in where she is living. Made in 2013, it was co-written by Greta Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach. Gerwig, of course, was the director of LITTLE WOMEN as well as of LADY BIRD. I am one of her fans. This film is kind of like an abstract painting, without an obvious structure. Adam Driver is in it, as well as Meryl Streep's daughter Grace Gummer. It seems somewhat autobiographical as Gerwig also wanted to be a dancer and went to an Ivy League college. Her parents in real life are her parents in FRANCES HA. I had to look the latter up because Gerwig and her mother look so much alike. Both Frances and Gerwig were also born in Sacramento. An interesting diversion for me.

We finally watched Knives Out last night. From somewhere I had the idea it was a comedy. Nope. But it had a great cast and was an intriguing story. It's a little odd.
Someone was asking about a thought-provoking series. Netflix has Orthodox which is quite interesting and thought-provking. I know very little about the Jewish religion. There is so much here. If anyone has referenced it, I don't recall.
We broke a heat record yesterday at 96 and I think we're breaking another today -- it's higher right now.
We saw Frances Ha when it came out because I wanted to. Bill went kicking and screaming. I liked it.

I thought ORTHODOX was excellent. You probably already know this, Karen, but the sect depicted in the film is not the type of Judaism followed by most Jews. When I was growing up, there were three synagogues near me. The most observant was the Orthodox, the middle ground was the Conservative, and the more liberal was the Reform. But even the Orthodox temple near me was not as radical as the group depicted in the series.

I loved LITTLE WOMEN 2019, it was just right for an early evening entertainment.
In the years after the Civil War, Jo March lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while her sister Amy studies painting in Paris. Amy has a chance encounter with Theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to Jo but was ultimately rejected. Their oldest sibling, Meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister Beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together
Just a little bit of the story, I did get the girls mixed up at first but didn't take long to figure them all out.
Meryl Streep was really good as Aunt March and does speak her mind as always. Laura Dern as Mary March. Looked as young as her daughters Emma Watson was a beautiful May March. and Saoirse Roman was wonderful as Jo March.
You must watch this movie for light entertainment that is not like a Hallmark movie but a lovely period piece.

I think Joon-ho Bong (PARASITE) is a genius. I just watched another of his films on Netflix, OKJA. Once again, the director is criticizing something terrible in society in a totally preposterous way that is somehow right on. This time the focus is corporate America and the food processing industry.
Okja is a computer-generated 'super pig,' one of many that have been created under the auspices of the CEO of a corporation. (Tilda Swinton) These animals are totally GMO but were sent to be raised in different countries and hailed as completely natural, fed organically.. Okja grew up in Korea, raised by a farmer and his orphaned granddaughter, Mija. The girl and Okja are very close. Mija discovers that Okja is going to be brought to NY to be celebrated as the best of the best, then will be slaughtered, along with the others. Mija sets off to make sure this does not happen. Jake Gyllenhaal is in this in a slapsticky role as a vet. Somehow it reminds me of ET, where a youngster develops a caring relationship with a non-human character and stands up for humane treatment of this 'other.' I found the film very moving.

Did any of you see the one-woman show ANN on PBS starring Holland Taylor as Ann Richards, the outspoken Texan who ended up as Governor? I remember her so well. I think it captured the essence of who she was. Brought back lots of memories.

We are at the beach and internet is spotty, so I checked out some DVDs at the library before our vacation. Last night we watched ROCK OF AGES. OMG...no one could pull off playing a rock star the way Tom Cruise did (and I don't really care much for Tom Cruise). This movie was funny and the music was great, so we both enjoyed it. Synopsis: The songs of Journey, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and other artists underscore a tale of big dreams in Hollywood. Soon after hopping off a bus from the Midwest, aspiring singer Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) immediately finds herself in trouble. Coming to her rescue is Drew (Diego Boneta), a bar-back at the legendary club the Bourbon Room. With stars in their eyes, the young lovers chase their dreams, but a misunderstanding involving rock god Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) threatens to tear them apart.
Another recent movie that we enjoyed: JOYFUL NOISE Synopsis: Hard times have fallen on Pacashau, Ga., but the townspeople have faith that the Divinity Church Choir will lift their spirits by winning a national competition. The choir has always made beautiful music, but now, its two leading ladies have hit a sour note. Vi Rose (Queen Latifah) believes that a traditional style is the key to victory, but G.G. (Dolly Parton) thinks tried-and-true means tired-and-old. The two singers must find a harmonious chord or risk losing everything.
