Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read.Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Another great weather day today. Pure blue sky to start, then up to 80. My computer must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed today, like I did the other day...it did not want to copy and paste at all. But I won that war!
Marsha, I rarely find things to watch on the weekends, on TV, what would you watch, if you just sit and watch TV all weekend? The most we watch is the local news in the morning, then the Nascar race, but that is not on till Sunday. I forgot to mention DH name was drawn for 4 Packer tickets....guess the joke is on us for this year! (I truly do not think there will be fans in the stands). We have no idea as to which game those tickets are for, or even if the tickets are all for 1 game or what. Later, after personals I will go into my experience with a Nurse Pract. I do not have much faith in them. That is what we are paying a doctor for, that experience and knowledge. Getting your headstone is a common practice. Go walk through Fort Howard Cemetery and you will see a lot of stones in place, with the year of birth but no year of death. It is just part of preplanning. Congrats to your DS about the puppy! I hope they have not bitten off more than they can chew.
Gareth, some days I have laundry every stinking day. I do try to have the weekend off, but most of the time that does not work. I like to keep my loads to 1 load, so that means, in order not to have more than 1, I have to keep doing it, most times daily. I kicked myself afterwards, at the diner that we did not leave right away. I hate to admit, but it did not dawn on me, that they did not have masks on, till it was too late. I am being more aware now, as that experience put me and DH in danger of getting the virus. Not happy about that! We did some running yesterday, but had our masks on, and everywhere we went everyone was masked.
Carol, those nurses are fine to see for normal, everyday things, but there are so many times that a doctor is the only way to go, for advice, and guidance as to what is going on with us. I will touch on that later, after I am done with personals. Lol, again, I am right there with you, on going to the movies with just DH. The last time I was at the theater, was with the kids, for kids movies. Now that I think of it, as to your DH having his BP checked at the dentist, in all of my years of going for so many different dental procedures, I have never had my BP taken. Glad to hear your DH BP is good.
Robin, don't these nice days really help our moods? It seemed our late winter/early spring, when we were fully into the lockdown, our weather was a bit dreary. Nice to get the summery weather. About going out to dinner, we have now gone to 3 places, inside. Except for the other day, we have felt comfortable at those 2 other places. But I think, other than going to DD house Friday, we will cut back on being a bit looser on our social lives. Wisconsin is doing so good right now, I would hate to add to an upward tick on the virus. Are there any plans for your DH for Father's day yet?
Hi to Anngie and Pinky!!
My experience with going just to a Nurse Pract: when I had appendicitis, all I had was a NP, who I saw for the the symptoms and she basically blew me off. She even suspected I had it, but did nothing about it. The next day I had DH come home from work to take me to ER. Sure enough, the darned thing was ready to burst. DH and DD2 gave me the riot act about seeing a NP about that, and insisted I switch to a MD. So from that day forward, I see a doctor, not any kind of NP. And, as a side note, a couple months later, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 lung cancer, and I do not even want to think how that would have gone, if I had just seen an NP!
We are starting to hear more planes now. We are in the landing pattern for the city airport, and that was something we had to get used to when we moved here, and then in March with the pandemic, all those big planes quit coming here, so we got used to it being quiet, like at the old house....lol, the other day DH and I ran to watch out the window, as a "BIG" plane flew over head! (Every now and then a small, private plane will fly overhead, so those don't count). There still is not the normal amount of commercial planes flying here yet.
Am reading what I did not think would be a good book, but is surprising me, as a very good read. The title is I Eliza Hamilton, by Susan Holloway.
Have a good day everyone.

Beautiful morning again for my walk. Not too windy yet but from the forecast it'll pick up again today. What's with all the wind lately?! Running short of time. I have a zoom workshop to work later this morning. Things I need to do before then.
Karen, you're lucky that everywhere you went yesterday everyone was wearing masks. It sure isn't that way here. The only place I go to is WM and HyVee and both places less than half the people are wearing masks.

Good morning everyone. The weather is beautiful here, sunny and no humidity- until tomorrow! Then is could last for four days or so.
Three retired friends from work and I decided to have lunch together after not seeing each other since February. We went inside wearing our masks and took them off once we were seated. The server also wore a mask. I noticed they removed some tables so the tables left were quite separated. Only three other tables were being used. It was fine and I have no worries about going. It sure was great getting together and catching up!
We had our school district voting yesterday by absentee ballot. According to the paper they resume counting ballots today. Can you imagine doing this on a national level?
Karen, I’ve seen headstones with no dod on them. It’s really a good idea in fact DH brought it up once - getting the plot, etc. I just don’t want to do it!
I’m with you on NP’s and PA’s. I wouldn’t see one unless it was for the simplest of ailments.
Marsha, I hear you - we always worry about our kids no matter what the age. But you know, I’m sure we did things our parents cringed over too, and we also survived! Colleges are going to have to come up with a plan soon for the fall. I’ve talked to parents who are really concerned about paying a lot of money to colleges only to have them learning remotely from their home bedrooms. Some are considering delaying that first year and taking online courses through their community college.
Gareth, I laughed at me too! But hey, who knew!!!
Carol, good news on DH’s BP!
Robin, I’ve heard nothing at all about our local schools getting back in September. What a nightmare it must be to coordinate all of this and still give the kids a good education. What I do feel, is that they MUST find a way to do it as the kids need to be back in school. Online teaching, throughout the nation, won’t cut it and the kids need to return to some similarity of normal.
Hi Pinky, hope you’re feeling better and stronger each day!

Re the online learning, ds switched to being a full online student when he had about 3 years left to finish his degree. He got every bit as much out of his education as he would have in the classroom. We could tell by his comments that he was getting a lot out of his classes. That being said, remember that it took him 8 years to finish school so he was a more mature student by the time he made the switch, and he said that in order to be successful with online learning you have to be a disciplined self-learner. I think most college freshmen would struggle with that. Plus by then ds was no longer looking for the "college experience" and really only looking for the degree.
DD seems to be doing ok with the online classes. She likes the flexibility afforded by the classes that upload the lectures for the students to watch on their own time, and the ability to pause and rewind those lectures if she needs to. Her Organic Chemistry class this summer has an interactive discussion section so they do emulate the classroom experience to a certain extent.
NP's and PA's. When my ob/gyn retired I stuck with the PA that I'd been seeing. I liked her better anyway. I think it depends on the practitioner and the practice.
Karen - too bad about the packer tickets! You have season tickets, don't you? Jews don't place the headstone until after the mourning period ends (8 days) and sometime within the first year after burial. Perhaps that is why I have never heard of the practice of having a headstone over an empty grave.
Not much to report here. Quiet evening. DH didn't go to the grocery store yesterday so we had leftover butternut squash lasagna from the freezer. It didn't heat up too well. I hope he goes today as my milk was sour this morning so I'm drinking my coffee without milk. If he goes and if he gets hamburger buns I'll grill burgers tonight. I told him not to get a while package of 8. before the pandemic I was able to just get 2 or 3 if I wanted them but I don't know if they will repack them for him now.

I read where some colleges are going to try to start on time in the fall. Activities will be cut back. They will not come back after Thanksgiving and have the remainder of their classes on line. I don't know about athletics. DH is hoping some will decide to go to the community college so their enrollment will go up. It really is a good idea. Students could live at home, save a bunch of money and get a head start on their basics which are transferable to any state school in Texas. Of course, some kids are looking forward to leaving home, the sooner the better.
Karen, that's terrible about the NP and your appendix. That could have been really bad.
It's hot here so I'm staying in the house.

Karen, good that you are going to think more about the places you go. I don't like the idea of wearing a mask, but I do it, and am happy that everyone else does.
Marsha, I think it is probably good for your DD that she knows here DB did most of his learning online. I do hope that she can get back into some in person classes, I just don't think the idea of a few hundred students in a lecture hall is more beneficial than online. What I said was that if my DS was in a class of 400, he would be sitting and wondering what the other 399 were thinking.
Anngie, I feel more comfortable with friends outside, distancing from each other. Dining at tables, even outside, is really meant for people you live with, not everyone. But, seeing as the incidence is very low, we have to assume that you are not going to get anything from your friends, but who really knows?
Carol, I heard that about ending at Thanksgiving also.
Gareth, I can't remember what I heard last night about Iowa, but there was some report about something there. My mind is mush sometimes.
We also had our school election by mail in ballot. The have counted, the voting was much heavier. Here on LI the budgets, or what I heard so far anyway, all passed. In our district someone ran against the school board president. I was concerned about the mail in that this person would get a lot of votes, but that was not the case. He won by an overwhelming margin. I have my mail in primary ballot ready to go.

The Chancellor at UW Madison sent out an email detailing plans for fall. They will start on their normal start date. They will hold all over-100 student and most over-50 student classes online. they will move the under 50-student classes to the larger classrooms to social distance (with cleaning supplies in the classroom). Students (and faculty and staff) will all wear masks. Everyone will go home Thanksgiving and finish the last 9 or so days of the semester and finals online. The dorms will be 2/room with rooms set aside with private bathrooms for quarantining any dorm dwellers who are sick or exposed. Cafeterias will move to more grab-and-go options and more room between tables. No mention of the communal bathrooms.
This is what we expected and I think it's a good plan. DD agrees.
So now dd's schedule will change because when they move classrooms to accommodate social distancing they will have to rejuggle class times, and we don't know when those details will be available. Also no idea about the sorority or extra curriculars - like the Equestrian team, which was financially struggling already - and things like internship fairs, etc and sports. I suspect the internship fairs will be cancelled. No idea what will happen with sports. Maybe play with noone watching?

Yay, I have some quiet time right now, so I can participate. (DH is sleeping in his chair, I am finally letting him sleep, after an incident this morning....he complained of a headache, and is out of tylenol in his bathroom so I told him to take some from my bathroom...of course he did not see the HUGE bottle of tylenol, just the small bottle of tylenol PM...yep! That is what he took!!! HMMMM...since when do you take BLUE pills for tylenol??? Oh my, I could have hit him! 8 am and taking that crap! Of course he will be sleepy! (He is always sleepy anyway!) So since he knew I was mad, he fought off the tiredness, till we ran to a store, so now he is sleeping.
Gareth, we can relate to all the wind so far this year, too. And then, being up on the 2nd floor, we get it stronger than down on ground level. There are so many things I want to put out on our balcony, but we always say, nope, the wind will take it away. Stupid story for us, about mask wearing: we rushed out the door to run to the store for a few things (plus I needed ingredients for bringing the dessert on Friday), that we both forgot to grab a mask. First time doing that. The store we were going to is the one I had to take my mask off the other day, cause I couldn't breath, so there is that, but I felt bad that DH did not have one on, and of course everyone in the store had one on. I felt so ashamed.
Anngie, our heat here has been humidity free so far, it has been great! I think it is supposed to sneak back in over the weekend. We used to be like you, about getting a plot and headstone, but after watching DH 2 siblings die, a few years ago, we wanted to get it done, since we had the money last year, from the sale of the house. Now we just have to finalize the funeral home part, and pay for that. For our voting in April, DH and I had already signed up for absentee voting, and it worked out correctly for us. We are going to do that for the primary, because we do not want to stand in a long line, and in fact we do not even know where the voting will be, if they will have to move us to somewhere else, as everything is up in the air right now concerning voting places, so we were able to sign up for mail in, just for the rest of this year. We are damned if we do, and damned if we don't, this year!
Marsha, I can totally relate to how your DD likes the online classes, I think that would be such a help, to be able to go back and rewatch it again. We will pay half of the season ticket package, once the Packers know what is going on with the fans this season. DB just paid the whole bill for now, but as with everything else, it is still up in the air if fans are even going to be allowed in. Someone on the local news said they heard the stadiums are going to just pipe in fan noise. So if there are no fans, DB will probably just let the Packers keep that money till next season, then we will pay him half. About the tickets that our name was drawn for, we filled out the form and DH ran it back to the stadium ticket office, with the payment, because it was a lottery drawing, and if you didn't pay for it right away, it would go to the next person. So we decided we could part with that money for now, for the off chance that they will allow fans at some point this season, then he would get the 4 tickets, and I see it went through my credit card right away.
Carol, about the colleges opening for the fall, then closing at Thanksgiving....I am not understanding how that makes any sense? Why bother opening for those few months? Maybe wait till Christmas break, then close? Sorry if I look stupid. Yes, about the NP and me, the surgeon said afterwards that the organ was all gangrene. Nice huh? The funny thing is, I worked in the hospital lab all those years and knew for an appendicitis one of the things the doctor does to confirm his suspicions is to do a CBC blood test, as that will show the infection. The NP did not even do that! So I went home all pissed off over that, besides being sick.
Robin, yes, I do not mind at all, to wear a mask, as long as I do not have to walk a long way, like last week at the big grocery store. When the Geek squad delivered our TV's, I asked them if they wanted us to put our masks on while they were here, and of course being young guys they said no, that is no problem. Then when the Spectrum guy came, I asked him the same thing, and yep, him being a young guy, he said no, that is ok, They all said that they are required to wear the mask into people's houses, but they are not worried about us not wearing one. (To me that is their age showing.)
Hi to Pinky.....how you doing today? Hope your therapy is easy!!! What do you have planned for your DH father's day?
I am just loving this weather, nice and warm, but not too warm, and low humidity, which for Wisconsin is shocking. There still is not a cloud in the sky. But the weekend looks like rain.
We are still having a bit of a hard time getting used to HULU, compared to our old cable company. We miss very much, on the program guide, no numbers on the channels. So it is a pain to change channels for us. Some nights, while I am reading, I hear DH in his room swearing up a storm.
Speaking of the devil, he woke up, so off I go, see ya all tomorrow.

Marsha, what about the rest of the year of school? When do they normally go back, after Christmas break, mid to end of January? Have they mentioned anything about that? It sure is going to be a mess, isn't it? I wouldn't be surprised to hear that all extracurricular activities are canceled. Am waiting to hear what they are going to do about the Badger/Notre Dame game at Lambeau, on Oct 3rd. Lol, I had wanted to try to get tickets to that!

Karen - I believe that badger/notre dame game is not being played at Lambeau. I heard if it will be played it will be at Notre Dame because technically they are the home team for that game.
As for the logic of going home from school Thanksgiving and not coming back, it is because flu season usually kicks in in November and they expect the Coronavirus to be bad during flu season. This allow students to leave like they normally would, but then not bring the virus back from wherever they go home. And it gives them a nice long break so hopefully by the time they come back they will be ok. They are trying to control people coming and going from campus. Spring semester starts the 3rd week of January.

Hi to all! I had therapy today so am tired, but just want to check in.
It is windy again today and hot. Suppose to have thunderstorms during the night and then in the 80's again. This over 90 degrees that we have had over 10 weeks and all the wind is getting old.
