I've been stopping in at my studio's virtual workshops a few times a week now, mostly out of curiosity.
A question for those who attend them on a regular basis: Do you see members doing stuff they never would do at an in-person meeting? So far I have seen people lounging in their robes on their beds, running on their treadmill with boobs bouncing, sewing at a sewing machine, knitting, eating sloppily. I think it's a little rude and more than distracting.
Right now I am looking at a woman who is walking her treadmill, dripping sweat, mouth hanging open, panting. It's gross.
Really, I think we should be treating the VW's like we were at regular meetings. Put your pants on, get your act together. It's 30 minutes, for heaven's sake.
And please adjust your phone/tablet/laptop so we don't see the top half of your face and your ceiling fan.
Small rant, thank you for listening.

Mine have been pretty uneventful. We had one person who was driving and listening. A few who didn't know how to mute and were talking to others in the room. A few with loud TVs. One who was on vacation.
People just need to learn to shut the video OFF when in those types of situations.

I haven't seen any of that. Most are sitting at a table or desk or chair in their living rooms. A lot drink water or coffee but no other food has been seen. One has a newborn and she mutes the screen when the baby cries.

We have our mugs of coffee or bottles of water. Sometimes we have folks who are walking (they are asked to "mute" since the background noise is distracting).
Most people have realized how unattractive they look, eating (or they will absent themselves from the screen to do so).
Sometimes we get folks like the Geico commercial (where Mara is chatting away, not realizing/caring that every word's going out to the group).
Our coaches and guides have learned the value of The Mute Button and do not hesitate to use it from THEIR end, always gently stating at the beginning that it's because of background noise. They also state that the workshop will be run the way an IRL would be - successes, NSVs, scale victories, struggles / Three Fast Facts (the quasi-scientific information from WW) / how to work it into one's daily life. Orientation and extended Q&A are offered at the end.
I knit - but I would knit in my IRL workshop and have done so for years. And my hands are below the screen.

People just need to learn to shut the video OFF when in those types of situations. It looks like everyone is now muted when our meeting starts and you need to hit your space bar if you want to talk. This morning something else weird happened. The "speaker view" option was stuck on one member who was not necessarily speaking all the time. It never went to the leader and that one member's zoom square was always outlined in yellow, as the box of the speaker would be. I privately messaged the guide and she had no remedy except to go to "gallery view" which gave me views of everyone, didn't solve the problem, and subjected me to the sweaty treadmill lady. I logged out and in again...same issue. Maybe just a temporary glitch. The occasional sip of coffee or water is fine, I think, but I don't think people realize how distracting a continuous repetitive activity can be when you can't look away from it. Does anyone know if there is a way to black out members who are doing those things?

Initially I likes the virtual workshops. My leader is good and she does present the workshop the same way she did studio workshops. Itβs the members that she canβt control. I agree with its only 30 minutes people. I swear one member was walking around her house last week getting her steps in. So distracting. And another walks around her kitchen with her device, pouring coffee, getting yogurt from the fridge. Couldnβt she do that before the meeting starts?

We have had some discussion on this same subject on the 'My WW Workshop Is Going To Open.' thread.
I can't believe what some people here on this thread stated they are experiencing on the VM they attend. I wouldn't want to go back to a class where a few people are being so inconsiderate of other people. Guess I would have to talk privately with the coach as to why this is happening. I was a middle school classroom teacher for thirty years and I would feel comfortable talking to my coach but I know many people are afraid or don't want to speak up which is understandable.
How many people are filling out the questionnaire at the end? I read WW thinks that members give VM a 97 per cent approval, could it be we are not filling out the questionaire at the end? Where did they get the 97 per cent approval rating when we are hearing so many people unhappy with VM?
One thing that bothers me is some people in our class who tell about their week for ten minutes, it doesn't give other people a chance to share or to talk about meaningful things to everyone.
How do we get our message across to WW that many people are unhappy with classes, the problems we are having?
Your comments and suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

mac, I was thinking that the leader might make a brief announcement at the beginning of the meeting, something asking (telling?) members to please put down their craft projects, sit down and join the meeting as if they were in a WW studio, enjoy their water or coffee, but treat the meeting as if they actually had to get dressed and go out and enter a studio. Gently remind them that all the other members can see them. Mention distractions. I don't know if it would make an impression on the hardcore robe-wearers, crafters, and on-screen exercisers but at least it would be an attempt at establishing some kind of order. Honestly I think it is a little disrespectful to the leader and the other members to not act in the VW's as you would act in an in-person meeting. People DID used to eat and drink at my in-person meetings but the rest of us could look away. Not so easy with the Zoom format. And yeah...thirty minutes, people.

this may have already been mentioned but when you join the meeting are you given the option to not turn your video cam on? any of the zoom calls i've been on, i turn off the camera. i just turn on the audio and mute unless i have something to say.
i wonder if treadmill runner and sloppy eater and yogurt getter doesn't know their cam is on. maybe they don't understand they can opt to not have it turned on? in any case, i agree with fullmahina that a brief announcement at the start of the meeting may be a good idea.
WW may also want to send an email out that reinforces meeting etiquette.

There are times when I stay muted because Arnie the Macaw is in a chatty mood or is taking a bath (he squawks in the bathtub). So I mute and make sure that both he and I are in the video, and the leaders whom I join all greet him by name.

Fullmahina,
Excellent suggestion on the class leader making this kind of introduction to the class each week! I believe this could solve many problems and if people keep acting stupid I believe the leader should ask for a private talk with the person on how they are disturbing the class and explain that kind of behavior has to stop! You have to know how to approach people the right way to get results!π
If I was a leader I would want to know if members were unhappy with my class and I would strive to correct what they were unhappy with. We were talking on the other thread about leaders, how much training do they have, how much training did they have for VM??? I would believe not much for VM because it came up so quick, so is this the problem, but, how do we as members get these messages across to WW???
Strength in numbers, we can make our VM a better place!!!
So, any ideas, suggestions, please share!
Anyone from the WW staff listening???

If they don't know the video cam is on then they are not looking at their monitor/phone/tablet. You can have the choice of two screen modes, either "speaker view" or "gallery view." The speaker view option enlarges the shot of the person who is speaking at the time and the other members squares are minimized at the top and the gallery view shows all members, highlighting the present speaker with a yellow border. If you choose to disable your video only your name will appear in a black square. If you have video on you can see yourself so I'm not sure how the offenders aren't aware of what they are doing---the ones I see are usually at least occasionally glancing towards the direction of their cams. At my meetings the audio is turned off for everyone and when you want to speak you hit your space bar and the audio is enabled or the leader/guide can also enable it. Lots of "can you hear me now" stuff but it works to cut down the background noise and idle mumbling that I saw in the early VW's.
