This is a thread devoted to those in their 50s & 60s and beyond who don't have children or grandchildren but live rich, full lives. Please feel free to join our stroll thru life and come back often for support and to share. **************************************************** It is the summer solstice on June 20 in the northern hemisphere, the longest daylight of the year, when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. For some, like is, it marks the beginning of summer. For others, it marks the middle of summer. Wherever you are, enjoy the summer as much as you can in these trying times.
Sunday, June 21 is International Yoga Day, a day to promote health, harmony and peace. We sure need that right now.

110 week coming here.
having recurring dream like a candy crush type game except the candy to get rid of is virus and there is too much of it and I have none of the bonus or bought tools, so I keep losing.
Whole county is mandatory mask but no teeth in law.
overload on news between AZ virus spikes, politics, and HUGE fires ,especially NE of us. Scary photos and no control in sight.Brain refusing to process.
think it is book and puzzle time.

Chele, thanks for the summer solstice reminder. It's mostly sunny and 91 here, so a typical summery day. We were supposed to get heavy rain today, so I don't know what happened to that. We sure could use more health, harmony and peace. I took some groceries over to DM's house and then drove around a bit to run the car. Her sister is coming over for lunch this week and she says they will keep their distance.
Denise, I may have to turn my sprinklers on this week if the rain doesn't come back. Sounds like your weather is as hot as ours right now.
Linda, I've been trying to avoid the news today, but I did see that Trump cancelled plans to talk to the overflow crowd at the rally since there weren't that many people there. The inside isn't as packed as they were expecting either. Hopefully, it will be the same at the rally in AZ. I don't know if there's any teeth in our mask law either, but I think it at least makes it easier for businesses to require them. Ugh on the candy crush virus dream. No need to interpret that one.

Thanks for the start Chele. It may only be the first day of summer but it's already been hot and humid here for 2 weeks.
Linda That's too hot for me.There are 8 counties in Texas that will have mandated face masks next week and several have recommended face mask guidelines but my county is nowhere to be found in either list.Stupid leaders. Here they can fine the businesses and if bars aren't following the guidelines they suspend their liquor license for 30 days I think on the first offense.
Kathy I read where 6 people in Trump's campaign there to set up for tonight tested positive for Covid. They immediately quarantined them plus any others who had close contact with them.
We have a friend who we have named as executor of our wills and he came out to get the documents and a key to our safety deposit box.He came bearing more gifts. There was homegrown yellow squash and tomatoes for Kenneth. He brought me a plastic bag full of cucumbers and cantaloupe. We will probably share the watermelon he brought but Kenneth doesn't care for cucumbers or cantaloupe.

moonriver, Denise, you had the same idea as we did. We watered the plants this morning. High heat (for is northerners, anyway), low humidity here, no rain. I hope work goes well tonight. Linda, that was an unsettling dream, I’m sure. I hope the book and puzzle took your mind off politics, fires and virus. Kathy, nothing wrong with the ladies lunching if they take precautions. You have to have human contact. I may be making a hair appointment soon. I have always had a sensitive head and hair bands and scrunchies give me a headache after about an hour, so I desperately need a cut. Waving to the rest of the crew. We went to the market and everyone behaved. Then we went to the Middle Eastern deli and one neighborhood woman did not have a mask on and she kept getting too close. We just moved away from her. She finally got the message. We always get our EVOO from the deli because it is better quality (made in Lebanon), and is a better deal than we can get even on grocery brands. We also got some falafel mix. We bake it instead of frying. I made some garlic Parmesan potatoes from an Eating Well recipe this evening. Meh. Not a keeper. I have a recipe for pita bread and I may give that a shot next week. It looks like a lot of work but we’ll see how they turn out. Have a good evening.

Thanks for the solstice start, Chele. Glad that people behaved at the farmers market but sorry about the woman at the deli. Nice that she finally figured it out. Good luck with the pita bread. Does it make enough that you could freeze some and make it worth all that work? I guess I'll have to be sure to do my yoga tomorrow.
Linda, what an awful dream! My brain isn't doing too well right now either and we don't have the fires to contend with. We do have virus spikes, however, and our county and all surrounding counties experienced upticks since yesterday. I did get my mind off the world by participating in the Mother Earth News Fair online version that went live today. As they say in the conclusion to every episode of Garden Smart, "even if you're a master gardener, there's always things to learn." Keep cool!
Isn't it a little early for you to have to water the grass, Denise? What's it going to be like in August? I've done regular yoga for years but have never done much chair yoga. Glad you enjoy it.
Kathy, I totally agree about getting rid of the other house. We got the contract a little while ago ad have returned it. Not thrilled with the number, but we can live with it. I don't know how people with vacation homes do it. One house is more than enough for me.How's your humidity? We are kind of sticky and I think it's only going to get worse. I heard something today about Saharan dust. How badly will that mess with your weather? I haven't watched much news today but did see some scenes of the crowd waiting outside the arena and there was one person wearing a mask and no social distancing. I figured he would have an overflow crowd, so I'm happy to hear that the crowd wasn't what they were expecting. There are some sane people in the world.
You definitely have had lots of cucumbers,Becky. I hope the cantaloupe will be a good one. I bought a sugar baby melon on Thursday and it's still sitting on the kitchen counter. Maybe tomorrow....I know it's hot and will only get hotter as August approaches. It sounds like there are a few consequence in some places there for not wearing masks. They aren't mandated anywhere here. And the cases keep rising. Our county and every surrounding county increased in cases since yesterday. Sevier County has almost quadrupled in the past 2 weeks. Gotta love those tourists!!
Liz, I hope you're having a good weekend. Did you get that rheumatologist appointment made?
We heard back from the RE agent after we submitted the paperwork online and these people are apparently very anxious about the house because they have lost out on two of them already. Hopefully their enthusiasm will continue. There is some kind of regulation in NC related to covid that we have to have a 45 day window to closing, so we won't officially close til August. I think the due diligence period ends in a couple of weeks. Maybe something will change and it can move faster.

Karen, congratulations on moving the house even if the number isn’t what you wanted. It will be a relief when you don’t have to worry about it any more. I thought about you when we got our salad turnips. I think we will pickle them this week. With Iggy around there will be no freezing of pita bread.
Becky, I hope the cantaloupe is better this time around. Enjoy those cucumbers. You and Linda can keep your temperatures right where they are.

Thank all the gods you sold the house! A real stone around your neck. we have neighbors With a cabin in the high country...that humongous fire has not got that far, but every summer with fires I would be nervous. The fire has shut down the main highway to get up there. if the wind shifts air us going to be very bad here.
Not much here. Working on the weird puzzle you sent...the one that is character's wish on cover and reality in puzzle...so cannot go by the box..Using some language to myself after couple hours...
meat loaf , potatoes and veggies tonight.
picked cucumbers from my water reservoir pot, and one Japanese Eggplant and a snack ripe bell pepper. Not bad for a four pot garden.

Becky, that was nice of your friend to bring all the fresh produce. Chele, I'm sure the ladies will enjoy their lunch. My aunt got a perm a couple of weeks ago. She's gotten them forever and nobody can convince her that she doesn't need them! She likes her curls. People are getting in heated arguments here about wearing masks. They still don't seem to get that it's to protect others in case you have the virus and don't know it. Karen, congrats on getting the contract on the house! You'll be glad to be rid of it and not have to deal with the repairs. I think it's hard to really get your money back on repairs, plus there's so much time and hassle with doing them long distance. I thought of renting out my first house, but decided I didn't want to deal with it. They did mention the Saharan dust the other day, but I'm not sure how much it will impact us. We're supposed to get some rain tomorrow, but we didn't get much this weekend, at least not yet.
Linda, those fires would make me nervous too. I hate to see that they've started already and hope the winds don't bring the smoke your way. We had a summer where we just didn't get any rain and fires started everywhere. Some of my friends and coworkers had to evacuate and fires blocked the roads on my commute on some days. I'll take our normal rainy season over that any day.
Liz, hope you're having a nice weekend.
Denise, how was the chair yoga?

Linda, the house is under contract, but remember we had people cancel contracts twice earlier this year. We can hope "three's a charm" but until we actually get the money in the bank, I will remain skeptical. The puzzle sounds like a major challenge. Did you get it finished? I'll bet the Japanese eggplant in your pot garden loves your heat. Mine don't even have one bloom on them yet. I'm growing both green knight and long purple varieties.
You are so right, Chele, about the relief it would be to no longer have to worry about the second house. One of the Mother Earth News Fair workshops from yesterday dealt with container growing root vegetables. So I ordered some Hakurei turnip seeds last night and will see if I can grow my own. Apparently they can pretty much be grown year round. We just had a pretty good t-storm passing through and Arya does not like thunder. Are you expecting rain or just hopeful? We also had fireworks across the lake at bedtime and she wasn't happy about that either.
Becky, how's your pain level today? Any chance your weather has cooled down a bit? Are your cucumbers good? Did you try the cantaloupe?
I see FL covid cases are up yet again, Kathy, and they are predicting you'll be the next large epicenter. Did you see that a leading infectious diseases doc from MN said it won't be a wave but a forest fire? Not good news! They are concerned about students returning to college campuses. Do I remember your saying DN would have oline classes this fall? TN is up almost 700 cases since yesterday, and Sevier County has the fastest growing case count in the entire state. Thanks, tourists! Finally saw some zip code stats and downtown Sevierville and Pigeon Forge are in the lead. Our zip code is about 5th or 6th, so that was good news. They showed scenes from the big outlet mall yesterday and it was packed. Is your weather still hot and humid? After working long distance with the contractor on building this house, we weren't looking forward to managing the repairs being 3 hours away. After the lease-purchase worked out so badly, renting the other house definitely was not something we wanted to consider.
Dale helped me with putting down mulch this morning. We spread 4.5 bags on the landscape fabric I put down last week and then ran out of mulch. Then I fed the container plants and emptied out some pots that no longer had plants living in them and got them put away and their soil dumped into the new large compost bin. Also had to do the weekly load of workout clothes, and that is also done.
Waving to Liz and Denise.

Karen, my zip code seems to have calmed down a bit and is now going up by 10s instead of doubling and tripling. I haven't heard whether or not DN will have all online classes, but I wouldn't be surprised. The median age of positive cases has fallen all the way to 35 which is interesting in a state with so many seniors. One of DN's roommates is working fulltime and got notified that a coworker tested positive. The roommate went to several locations and couldn't get a test since the places were too crowded and ran out. I think he finally got one, but hasn't gotten results yet. DN was going over to DS's place for Father's Day, but they decided it would be better to wait. DBIL also isn't seeing his grandchildren this weekend. DS told him he's getting his dream Father's Day - no kids, he can play video games all day, and can sleep whenever he wants.
Namaste Chele! Hope you get some rain soon. We're still down for the year despite the recent rains. It's hot, hot, hot today and fairly humid.

My county still surging but under 3000 new today. 75% is under 44 including a lot of teens. People just will not stop bar hopping and partying.
Have to get groceries tomorrow...county went masks Yesterday. We shall see.
At least only 6600 instead of 19,600 plus got exposed at Tulsa rally. The kids must have given him conniptions. The photo op in DC with hurting peaceful protesters finished him ...60% Millennials and next one down are now supporting Biden.
Fingers crossed this contract sticks, Karen.
not much here today...Micki got his second walk at 10:30 AM. Even after sunset it is hot. I hate when we get to the end of June dry heaves when it is still100 at midnight. Looks like 111 mid week days. But last couple years it was 115-118. Years ago it was 122!
worked on that puzzle. Ok box shows couple and lab in yard with house and pond and lawn mower bird feeder. So far three landing fliers in red ..one huge , have landed, things are moved, couple is huge, lying on grass, and dog is large and hairy. All faces are goony. I have a lot of pieces to go.
dinner is Chile and lemon blueberry ricotta pound cake...sampled it...oooh. Very good. I think one of you talked about it. www.eatingwell.com/recipe/251419/blueberry-lemon-ricotta-pound-cake/

Karen The thing with cucumbers is you have to pick them every day or they get too big.Our friend's wife had gone out to pick them and didn't take their youngest grandson and our friend said he cried so he had to take him out there so he could help.He is going to make a good farmer one day.The cantaloupe is delicious.Bastrop County isn't mandating face masks either.Travis County recorded their highest numbers ever today with 506 new cases since yesterday. If the businesses don't enforce the masks I don't know what will happen.Trump made such an idiot of himself at the rally saying we needed to slow down the testing and all those people not wearing masks.I hope you can sell the house.
Chele Last time it was the watermelon that wasn't ripe. The cantaloupe is delish and he said the watermelon is riper but we don't have room to cut it up and put it in the fridge yet.It got up to 101 today and still 90 at 8:00.
Karen The soreness had gone away but started hurting on my walk. It's been stiff most of the day.No cool down anytime soon unless it rains.Yes the cantaloupe is great.
