BBR Chapter 4
How to use the Beck Diet Solution
In Beck’s 42-day (6 weeks) program the actual dieting doesn’t start for two weeks. If you aren’t currently dieting or maintaining I suggest you go ahead and wait to start the actual dieting. Those of us who are currently managing our weight can continue doing what we are doing with our food plan but we also need to do the tasks in the first two weeks. The two week wait teaches you skills you need to be successful.
Beck says you need 3 X 5 cards, sticky notes, and a bound notebook. You use the index cards to write up “helpful response cards,” which list your sabotaging thoughts and you helpful responses to counter them. This can be done electronically on your computer, IPhone, or IPad… The sticky notes are for reminders you will leave all over your house (strategic places). The notebook is used for journaling and this probably can also be done electronically.
Will anyone that does their cards and/or journaling electronically please share how they do it.
How about we share how we ended up here?
Reminder: We share our advantages of losing weight list tomorrow.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, July 1st) is the first day of the 42-Day program. The assignment is to list your reasons for wanting to lose weight/maintain your weight. Just a heads-up in case you want to start on your list early.

This is my third time losing weight on WW and my first time maintaining my weight loss. I was on the old WW message boards when I started the program in 2006. It was on the boards that I heard about the book "The Beck Diet Solution" by Dr. Judith Beck. When I read she taught about talking back to your sabotaging thoughts I knew the book was for me. When someone started a thread to do a review of the book's program I joined in. I kept up with the reviews because I knew I needed them to keep following the thoughts in the book. I lost 80 pounds and kept it off for over 12 years.

I did WW 20 years ago and lost 16 pounds to get to goal. In the next 20 years I have slowly gained and lost and gained weight again and am now 40 pounds above goal. My goal is to commit to 5 pds incremental losses.
This is 4th look at Beck program in 2 years. The first two times, I did some of the skills some of the time. The third time was better and I’m hoping to continue to improve this time too.
I use an electronic journal sporadically called day one where I record exercise, eating and drinking, with text and icons. The more I record, the better my accountability. I have my “cards” on my phone, but I’m thinking about using notecards this round because I tend to breeze over the phone reminders.

I did the notes on color note in my phone BUT it seems that at some point all of the cards I had disappeared. Not sure what I will do this time. I obviously didn't refer back to them or would have thought to save them...hmm...Not sure I have post-its or 3x5 cards, either. I guess checking in here and on other threads are what I do instead?
I am not sure how I found this group. I think someone on another thread mentioned a review would start and I thought, "Why not?" and so I did. That was awhile ago and I have learned but still have not found the book or had someone buy/order it online to read on my ereader so really DO learn from all of you and then sometimes check the topics out some more online.
As for my weight hx * 1984: joined WW after being evacuated from Lebanon with one suitcase, my husband and two very small children - lost about 30 pounds and kept most of it off for about two years
* 1998/9: Someone brought the Points information to me in Lebanon and I did the original program and lost about 50 pounds to get to goal weight again - took up weight lifting and walking - kept the weight off about 2 years * lost about 20 or 30 pounds a few years ago (2014?) and it came back before I reached goal * Been dabbling BUT recommitted about a month and a half ago and am under 200 and though pounds are coming off slowly they are going down. I am happy with my eating and am exercising and focused on increasing strength, indurance, etc while getting lower on the scale.

I first joined WW at the age of 19 and lost about 30-35 pounds. I was always a normal weight until I moved away from home at 18 and became depressed and isolated, and ate as much unhealthy food as I could, and mostly worked and sat around my apartment. I moved back home after 18 months and joined WW, along with my father who had a tendency to gain. As he was 6'3" he had to eat a lot in order to gain. Same for me, I've always had an efficient metabolism. I really have to overeat consistently and be sedentary to gain. But I can do that.
I went back and forth for decades, mostly being an OK weight, wanting to lose maybe 10 pounds, no more. Then in '96 I developed ulcerative colitis, was hospitalized, lost a lot of weight, mostly muscle. Went on a heavy dosage of steroids and gained. Ended up 20 lbs. over a normal weight for me.
I started Beck more to manage the UC. Any weight issues were a bit secondary. I first did a review in 2014 on the old WW message boards and have done more reviews than I can remember. My weight is great and I am symptom free from GI issues. The only thing I have to watch out for is keeping the alcohol consumption down.
Thank you Dr. Beck and Judy!

lani, You're welcome. It is nice to hear success stories. It is interesting that you used Beck to manage your UC.

Happy to join you ladies.
Thank you Judy for all the work you do on these posts, you are an amazing lady with all the places you show up on this board with your help, I can tell you are dedicated to keeping your weight at goal!
The WW program was established in 1963, I started my WW journey in 1964.
I was teaching next door to my teacher mentor, she looked so thin and healthy, one day I got up the nerve to ask her how she was able to look so beautiful, she said WW, want to come to class with me. Well, of course, I jumped at the chance. It took me a long time to lose the 40 pounds and get my LT. I loved being that weight and feeling so good.
Out of all the many classes I've been to one stands out in my mind. We lifted bags of flour, I couldn't even lift 40 pounds so how could I carry it around all day? I've been active in WW for many of the 56 years. There were times when I thought I could do my own plan which lead to weight gain. I was below goal for several years until two years ago when my beta blocker medicine was increased and so did my weight. I gained 30 pounds, returned to WW class, lost 20 pounds but still have 9 1/2 pounds to goal. I am really struggling trying to get this last ten pounds off.
I've heard a lot about the Beck program and have been reading posts just recently since Judy started this ñew round and decided to join the group!

I've been a WW member for 37 years. I reached goal 3 times, the last of which was 2013. I retired and was struggling to maintain goal weight AGAIN! Thanks to bbbearsmom, who invited me to follow the Beck review with her and the group, I did my first Beck Review. I was so impressed with the tools offered that I shared the book with my WW leader and any friends who were struggling with weightloss. Since then I've done the review 3 times. Each time I learn more about myself. The last time I did the review I made a commitment to myself to do all of the tasks and check in daily with the group, reading all of the posts. The benefits have been enlightening to say the least. This time I am here because I have finally managed to arrive at maintenance in earnest and I want to keep it that way. These tools will help me continue to maintain. I finally "get it" that I have to continue doing the things that helped me get to this point. No more going back to the old ways after losing the weight.

I found this group on the old, shitty WW forums though what was then my 'homeroom group', the 'Wendy/Maggie' group. I found them and their use of staggering WPs interesting and it worked for me, so I use that format of PP to this day. One of those members of that group, Tammy ( Tammy) participated in the old BBR group and she recommended it to me and I followed along lurking several times before I started posting. I didn't buy the book for a while, but I fully believe that one cannot do this BBR successfully without reading along with the book because there is soooooo much more content in each chapter than what we can cover here. Once I got the book I realized what I'd been missing and was able to have a deeper and clearer understanding of what the BBRs were really all about!
I did WW years ago for the first time and lost about 16 pounds, and I remember feeling so great about myself. Then I stopped 'doing WW' because I thought once I was at goal I didn't need to diet and I could just wing it and I'd be okay. I always managed to keep off the weight for a year or two, but then I allowed myself to give in to mindless eating or emotional eating, and gain it all back. I lost about 35 pounds or so on Flex, then gained back once I stopped following the plan. Then I got back into WW with their PP program and I really liked that because it got me eating fruit daily again, which I hadn't done on Flex because it took up so many points! PP works for me, so that's what I stick with. I don't subscribe to the chaos of changing my WW plan every time WW decides to roll out a new one - mainly because I think they're money grubbing for doing so - so I stick with PP now. Most of you in this group know that my husband had a life threatening heart attack 3 years ago that caused me to have PTSD, and my therapist gave me permission to not deal wit weight loss until I got that under control. I have that under control and have no excuse NOT to get back on the band wagon and lose the weight once and for all. I want to get to the point where I'm doing this as maintenance, not weight loss. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
PS: I know lani enjoys my marathon 'catch ups'...I hope I've done you proud with this one lani!

Let's see... I started in 2013 after the birth of my first baby. I was up to 233 #. I joined WW PointsPlus, got on the boards, read Beck, and was essentially cured. I lost 53 lbs, was down to 179.9 #. Still had a ways to go to 155. I got pregnant in 2014 with my second baby, shot right back up to the 200's. I rejoined late 2015 and got smacked in the face with SmartPoints and the destruction of the boards. Quit rejoin quit rejoin quit rejoin. SmartPoints, Freestyle, WWMyWay. Anyway, I'm 218# still trying to get the magic back. I'd really like to fit in those 12's again.
