i have elementary age school children (2 of them) and my ex and i have discussed it at length. we will send them back if the state decides they can reopen (not if trump decides, which he cannot much to his dismay to dictate every little sadistic wish he ever fantasizes about). but we will only send them back if they modify the schedules and structure. in los angeles county, that is exactly what they plan to do. they want smaller class groups, staggered schedules, and masks if the student is old enough. mostly middle school and older, i believe. they want one way hallways and lunch can no longer be an entire grade or set of grades at one time. they will get their lunch and come back to the classroom (or it may be delivered to the classroom door). recess will only be with the small group of classmates and no physical education. not sure if they will allow the playground to be open to the kids or not.
so i'm on board to send them back if the state health officials give the green light. if they don't, we will just continue the distance learning as we did last school year. it's not ideal, but i will do whatever is recommended by the health professionals. not by some guy who lies to our faces and says it's no big deal.

I think it's a terrible idea. Grownups can't even stay far enough apart with or without a mask and we expect children to do it?
It's not just children in those schools. It's grownups too. Janitors, lunch ladies, bus drivers, nurses, teachers, office workers, grounds people.
Those children hang out in malls after school, visit their grandparents, and other relatives, they hang out at a friend's house who could have a sick relative living with them.
What's the rush? A healthy economy wont stay healthy if the people who support it are too sick to support it or dead.
Bad, very bad idea.
Not a fan of putting lives at risk to make the economy or the ghoul in the WH look good.

I don't know what other states are planning, but here in Texas, it's "if 1 person tests positive, the school is closed for 2 weeks to see if it's spread and for top-to-bottom sanitization of the school". I can't see this being anything even remotely possible. The schools will be open for a few days, then closed, then open, then closed. For parents, this will be a nightmare "will my child be home or at school". There's no way they can go back to work not knowing from 1 day to the next if they'll need to stay home for 2 weeks. IMO: shoot for a January opening, give it several more months and see what's going on, gives the schools time to plan better, etc. birdgal , absolutely! All the experts are saying that kids seem to be more resistant (though that's changing) to getting really sick, but they're excellent spreaders. I can't see kids social distancing, and with schools overcrowded as it is, I can't imagine cutting back on class sizes either. Editing to add: I'm actually having some anxiety about the school thing, for sons sake. With about 1/2 of "his" kids being school age, if they go back to school, it will mean more potential for exposure to him and his co-workers, too. (not to mention the pre-school age kids at the center).

No kids, so I don't have a dog in this fight about school openings other than the students spreading it around among themselves and infecting folks at home, and the health of vulnerable teachers. I feel for people who have to work outside the home and have children they cannot leave at home unsupervised. I have no idea how they are dealing with this.
Good news: SCOTUS said president is not above the law, in the abstract. Bad news: no information on DT's finances until after election, as they kicked the actual cases back to the lower courts.
ETA: In DT's latest tweet storm "I have done more than any other president in my first 3-1/2 years!" Yeah, to screw things up.

Our city started in-person summer school on Monday for the high schools. At one of the high schools a person who has since tested positive was at the school on Monday so school has been suspended from yesterday through Friday. Six people who had contact with the infected person have been asked to quarantine for two weeks. The person with COVID did not have symptoms during the day Monday but developed them Monday night. They were tested on Tuesday and had the results Tuesday night and contacted the school. Wonder how they got their test results so fast.

Does anyone know if this ego maniac has ever started a sentence with any other word besides "I"?
It's frustrating and alarming that so many people still cheer on this deranged, pathetic little man.
If it wasn't for daddies money this guy would probably be walking behind a NYC horse and buggy with a BIG shovel all day long. He would be good at it too. He's had a lot of practice handing people a load of poop.

Bbbear, those results were really fast. We were tested at an urgent care center that is offering free covid testing by appointment. We got the results in 4 days.
Maybe the place they got tested does everything themselves.

birdgal, Could be. The newspaper ask how they got the results so fast but didn't get an answer.

This is true. All he had to do was hold up a bible and that sealed the deal. They are putty in his tiny little hands. Silly foolish people.
I can't imagine their God would be proud of them. He warned them about wolves in sheeps clothing. He specifically told them to be aware of people like that and not to be fooled.
Oh well. You can lead a believer to the truth but you can't make them see it or believe it.
None are so blind as those who will NOT see.

He is our version of Jim Jones. People who are mature enough to know the difference between sincerity and BS had his number from day one.
The other people praise his unholy name.
