Day 7 – Arrange Your Environment
This is about avoiding environmental triggers that might encourage you to eat especially at the end of the day when you are low on mental energy. Beck believes in the “out of sight, out of mind” adage. This can be applied to your home, your work, or any other environment you are in for a period of time.
For changes at home she suggests:
Remove your personal temptations. Throw away give away food that might tempt you. Food you can’t dispose of and is a trigger store out of sight.
Use smaller utensils and dishes.
Work with others in your home to come up with solutions to you being able to avoid food/drink triggers.
Beck suggests being proactive at work about the food/drink environment to try to change it.
How have you changed the environment in your home, at work?

The biggest thing I do is keep sweets out of the house to prevent me from triggering on them. I also keep the foods I need in the house.

I think if it’s in the house I’ll eat, so I need to not buy trigger foods, but of course I sometimes do.

Environment Changes:
I think one of the biggest changes in the house that helped most was not having children in the house when my son left for college - I focused on me in the empty nest and reached goal weight. That was years ago, though. BUT not having others to cater to with food makes a difference.
We do have plenty of fresh produce, do not have sweets in the house, I make up dry beans to have for quick meals, when I really want something that is a "treat" I have to go out and get it to have it and often will have it while out and have one serving only.
I have been doing this long enough that snacks, sweets, soda and such have not been in my house routinely for decades!

I keep tempting foods out of the house or only allow them in small quantities so they'll be gone quickly. Wine with dinner has become a trigger for salty and sweet cravings so I had to keep the wine selections to a minimum. I've found that without wine I have no desire for chips or chocolate.

luvvinlife , yep, that wine will lower inhibitions in all areas. I allow myself wine on Friday and Saturday only. The only junky food items that I keep on hand are snack bags of potato chips. I allow myself one on Friday. Mr. Lani likes to have them more often. I am not tempted. I have an ongoing cheese limitation battle, but I'm willing to engage because I can't imagine life without cheese. Everything else in the house is healthy.

How have I changed the environment in our home? We are retired so work is not a problem.
Good topic today as a reminder that I can't keep some foods in our house. I don't buy junk and bring it home, usually only some treats for Mr. Mac and they are stored in one area of the pantry, I know I can't have these foods.
The problem for me came up when the pandemic started and our studio class meetings were closed as I kept wandering into the bakery when grocery shopping and started buying small cakes that I love, then I gained three pounds which put me ten from my goal. Not sure what this was all about that I felt I had permission to buy and eat junk. My plan:
* So back to the old rule, no wandering in the bakery or buying junk, all whole foods as I'm doing now. If I want a treat occasionally I buy it outside the house and eat it there.
* I cannot eat any treats stored in the pantry that are for Mr. Mac.
* Make sure I have whole, healthy foods in my pantry, refrigerator and freezer.
Judy, question. May I change or add to day 1 posts we made concerning Advantages Of Losing Weight?

Not sure what this was all about that I felt I had permission to buy and eat junk. Maybe because we might die? Only sort of kidding.

I know that I cannot have too many chips/salty crunchy snacky things in the house because I cannot monitor myself well around them. During the beginning of lock down we had chips and pretzels a lot but we're dialing that back a lot right now because it's just not necessary. I try to keep a lot of fruit in the house for snacks, and for desserts I have either fresh fruit or an Italian Ice cup.
