Day 10 – Set a Realistic Goal
Beck talks about being realistic goal when you set a goal for weight loss. It is important to be realistic about your rate of weight loss because one of the bigger reasons people quit their attempts at weight loss is because they aren’t losing weight fast enough. She also points out the option of just having your goal being five pounds at a time.
Since a lot of us are at our goal weight this can also speak to us about setting other goals, for example exercise goals. We need to be realistic with those too or else we wear ourselves out and may fall into “all or nothing” thinking and stop exercising at all, could also happen with weight loss goals.
If you are losing what type of weight loss goal have you set for yourself? Do you think it is realistic and how will you handle it if you have set backs?
For those of us maintaining I am assuming that we all have the general “maintain my goal weight” goal. Have you found that goal a realistic one for yourself and the life you live? How do you handle setbacks?
Heads up: Day 12 (Sunday) is “skip lunch” day. You might want to think ahead about that so you can be prepared to do it on Sunday, although there is no obligation to do it if you don’t want to and if you want to do it you can do it any day you choose.

When I was losing WW had your first goal be 5% of your starting weight, and I think they also did 10% of your weight. After the first two goals I just did 10% of my current weight each time I reached a goal. I'm maintaining and it is working out for me. One thing that helps is we don't have an active social life so I have less temptations. As for setbacks I start talking to myself and bring myself around to cutting back to lose the gained weight. Also when I have a setback I also pay attention to the behavior that is causing the less than ideal behavior and work on modifying my thinking and behavior.

If you are losing what type of weight loss goal have you set for yourself?
I think in decades and half-decades. I am not sure why but it seems to work for me SO my next goal is to get into t he 80s and then it will be the 70's, etc.
I have looked at how long it will take to reach certain weights based on half pound, one pound, one and a half pound and two pound per week weight losses...but that is for fun. Last time I reached goal weight (1998/9) I lost what averaged out over time to be 1.5 pounds per week and as I am older figure it should be that or more likely less than that per week - to be realistic.
Do you think it is realistic and how will you handle it if you have set backs? I think it is realistic. I know what has happened in the past and since I am in this for the long haul without a pre-fixed idea of what I will lose each time I weigh I do look at my morning weigh-ins asa something to note, perhaps average in the future if I hit a plateau and don't really worry about it. Yesterday I weighed 194 and today I weigh 190.6...I could have let it derail me but knew it would drop again if I stayed OP...and it did. It seems different this time and I am going with the flow and not looking too closely at what caused the difference

I’ve reached my initial goal weight. However, I haven’t decided what my maintenance weight will be.
When I go over my points I reel it in on the next meal. So far, that works well.

I set a goal that I can easily maintain at five pounds under, at least. So it's really more like a drop dead weight, I guess, but labeling it as a goal makes me feel in control.
I haven't had any setbacks for a couple of years - knock on wood!

I used to look at losing as where I am vs. my ultimate goal, and while I still have that ultimate goal in mind, I'm trying to look at the immediate future in 5 pound increments, so that I can feel success on a more regular basis, which I think is a great motivator.

I like commuting to 5 pounds loss at a time.
