Day 11 –Differentiate Between Hunger, Desire, and Cravings
This is a biggie!!!
Hunger: when you have fasted for several hours and your stomach is empty.
Desire to Eat: not being particularly hungry but eating because food is around.
Craving: physiological and emotionally intense urge to eat.
Beck reminds us that it can take up to 20 minutes for our satiety to reach our brains from our stomach.
Beck wants us to monitor these feelings for a day before, during, and after we eat.
Tell us your experience with hunger, desire to eat, and cravings and how you handle them.

With hunger it can depend. It seems when leading up to dinner I can let it be knowing I will be eating soon, although I have to watch myself and not get too hungry. Earlier in the day I'm more quick to eat something if I'm hungry.
With desire I'm usually good. I can identify it now. I say I just want to eat to be eating. Since I don't keep sweets in the house I do pretty good.
With cravings it depends. If I have to go out and get something that usually puts it off for a long time. It is usually a sweet and I remind myself I often don't feel to good after having too much of a sweet and that stops me too. I've had a craving since mid-June that I've put off. What might save me in the long run is I want to eat the piece of cake in the bakery/restaurant and I don't consider it safe right now. I might eventually go get the piece of cake and bring it home but that doesn't sound as nice as being in the restaurant and having coffee.

Tell us your experience with:
hunger,
Hunger gnaws at the belly and causes physical issues like headache, dizziness and such. In that situation I look for something to eat and then eat it...if I need the calories I probably won't be fussy about whether or not it is the best option if it is the only option. If it is minimal hunger then I can easily wait.
desire to eat, and
This is usually triggered by seeing or smelling something, remembering the taste and having t hat desire to eat the food triggered. If I am not the least bit hungry and am totally focused on the plan I easily move on and don't bother. I look at the points I have and if I have enough might have a bit or more than a bit and be careful the rest of the day.
cravings and how you handle them. Can occur anytime and anywhere. They can be brought on by reading something in a book, a thought or memory, an odor, seeing the item...whatever. If I have a craving I try to think "what is it I really want" and if it is that item specifically then won't try to feed the craving with something else but will put it off. If it is not in the house then I have to get in the car to go get it and that is usually deterred easily...especially with covid-19 around.

I tolerate hunger well.
Desire to eat I can have randomly at any time. If I have the calories to spend I will indulge.
I don't really have cravings. All the food I do eat is what I really enjoy. I guess cheese would a constant craving. Now, I've got that song in my head...

I can handle hunger well, as long as I remind myself to eat normally at the next meal.
When I desire food at home I do a hunger check. When I’m out with others it depends on what’s available to eat and whether or not I have the points for it.
I crave sweets sometimes after dinner. Usually it can be satisfied with fruit. When I crave something long enough, I choose a day to have it and that’s that.

HUNGER:
I always remind myself that my hunger isn't 'real' hunger. Real hunger exists in places where people are so impoverished that they literally have no food security. So if I'm feeling hungry I ask myself, is it really that bad, it's usually not! If I haven't eaten breakfast or lunch and I AM actually hungry, I get an unpleasant feeling in the pit of my stomach, I feel jittery, I feel short tempered, etc. That's when I know I better eat something soon.
DESIRE TO EAT:
My desire to eat is usually either I'm happy to cook something I know will be tasty, OR more often, I'm really just bored and eating out of boredom. This is something I'm working on.
CRAVINGS:
Cravings are usually I see a picture or get a memory of something and I can't get it out of my head and I just want it until I scratch that itch. It's doing so in moderation and either within my DPs or rearranging my WPs so I can indulge. Last Sunday's pizza and brownie escapade, case in point. If I give in to a craving I need to either have the points for it OR be willing to take the hit on the scale that week.
