Anyone have experience dealing with gout themselves or with a member of their family or a friend? My husband is having a gout attack in the big toe of his left foot and we are trying to figure out what to do.

I worked with a man who sometimes got gout flare ups but it was usually in conjunction with his prodigious consumption of red wine. There are lists of food to avoid. Good luck to your DH, it's very painful.

MY DH will have an occasional bout. There is a medication that you can take daily but he does not do that or feel he needs that - his only strikes maybe 1 - 2 times a year. He has a medication he can take as soon as it comes on and it relieves it almost immediately. It is very painful I understand Marie

My DH had repeated gout attacks, all in his big toe. Each time the doc would put him on Colcrys (generic: colchicine) and it would clear up right away. Finally she just put him on a maintenance dose, which he took daily for the rest of his life. He never had another flare-up.

I've had it in my elbow, but never in my foot. They told me what not to eat, and to eat a lot of dark cherries. I bought the frozen ones. Haven't had it happen since 2002.

Gout is caused by high uric acid levels. Avoid the following foods:
Red meat and organ meats (liver, tongue and sweetbreads). Shellfish such as shrimp and lobster. Refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice, pasta, sugar). Processed foods (chips, snack foods, frozen dinners). Sugary beverages. Alcohol (If you drink, limit it to no more than one alcoholic drink for women and two for men within 24 hours).
