Thinking Mistake #3 -- Overly Positive Fortune Telling
You predict the future too positively, without considering other possible outcomes.
"I'll be able to eat just a little bit of this food I crave, feel satisfied, and stop."
"It's okay if I just estimate the amount of food I'm supposed to have instead of measuring it. I'll still lose weight."
How do you handle overly positive fortune telling?

From Tammy: I loved how someone in the group once pointed out the relationship between overly positive fortune telling and overly negative fortune telling. I suppose it is also combined with all-or-nothing thinking. For example: 1st thought: I'll lose 20 pounds a month and get to goal in no time! Then, when that doesn't happen. 2nd thought: I'll never get to goal.
I believe that this person's theory was that the overly positive fortune telling always preceded the overly negative. Before that statement, I did not think that I did overly positive fortune telling. But this made me realize that I do.

I do overly positive fortune telling. I'll tell myself that I can eat more and be okay. If I do it too often I end up having a weight gain. I work on talking back to the thoughts reminding myself how I really don't like having to lose weight.

These thinking mistakes really resonate. Overly positive for me means eating out/taking out is ok and in reality itβs better less often or not. Over positive thinking is also winging a daily food plan, which never works. Staying on task thru vigilance is the best thinking for me.

I agree. It's a slippery slope from cutting myself some slack, like when I go off plan, and overly positive fortune telling, like when I say "I can have desert, I'm sure I'll make up for it tomorrow."
I think the ARC keeps me in the right frame of reference and a few "No Choice"/ Helpful Rules keep me from going off the rails too far.

Overly Positive Fortune Telling:
I like the positive-negative look at this...and the way you tied it into all-or-nothing thinking. That taken into account, I do this. I setup charts to see how much I would weigh if I lost pounds at a certain number per week ->> to see when I would be at goal weight and when those milestones are not met think about throwing in the towel. I am better at not doing this sort of thing BUT after two over-the-top calorific intake days I decided to change the diet and not change back to working the plan I had chosen for this month. I dropped the first day counting points (instead of core) and feeling overly positive after the second day (this morning) stepped on the scale to see a scale increase from yesterday. At that point (really last night) I decided to stick with Core till the end of the month and see how I do. All of the eating plans work if I do the work and all will fail if I stray from the plan.
So...even keeled and ready to work Core till the end of August...then reassess.

I used to do this with overeating my DPs and then I'd make a deal with myself that I'd work out more the next few days and/or eat less the next few days and it would all even out. Of course I'd never actually do that and so it didn't work. But I've done this long enough that I don't rubberband into Negative Fortune Telling re: weight loss because I know I am the only one who can make this happen for myself, or not. It's up to me, and me alone, so no point in engaging in Negative Fortune Telling.
I have tried compensating now, and following through on it, and that seems to work, so IF I need to, I know that extra exercise or whatnot WILL counterbalance any big off plan eating and I do that.

I used to have about 5 different ways that I would be overly positive fortunelling. But since doing this last review, I am down to 1. I can't tell myself that I can continue eating as usual because "I have enough points left to use." Now I compensate for high-point meals by having low-point meals afterwards, regardless of how many daily points I have left. Most times, it balances out rather predictably.

In the grocery store, in the frozen food aisle: "OK, Self. You were unable to refrain from snarfing down the entire half-gallon of premium ice cream in one sitting the last 20 times you bought ice cream. But this time it is going to be different. This time you will measure out one pitiful little 1/2 cup serving and then STOP. You can do it!"
Right.

The latter comes in little cups and is utterly delightful on very hot evenings, cools you right down! Or sorbet, which is significantly better for you than ice cream!

May I suggest sorbet or Italian Ices I have sampled sorbets and Itailian ices. They are significantly lacking in fat-laden creaminess with a swirl of caramel goop and little chocolate truffle bits.
