I'm curious how others have dealt with feeling discouraged right at the outset?
I know I need to take this first of a thousand steps, but it feels overwhelming. Looking forward to getting to know people on these boards!

I am one of those people that has been around for a good long time, but I've never hit goal. Lost a bunch of weight, just never to goal.
However, I have learned a bunch of new, good habits. Tonight I pushed a 1/2 full plate of absolutely delicious food away because I was full. Ten years ago, that never ever would have happened. I check the nutritional info for everything. i rarely snack anymore - other than a piece of fruit or a cheese stick. There is always a tumbler of water next to me. I put my fork down while I'm eating, instead of inhaling my food. And so on.
I celebrate the good habits, not the scale.
For a long time I was in one of the daily support threads, and made some good friends, and it really helped. That group fell apart (for a variety of reasons that are unimportant) although i remain friends with many of them. Start on the General Discussion board - there are daily threads that are very welcoming and supportive. Introduce yourself, and jump into the water.

em welcome!! Five pounds, that's all you have to lose is FIVE pounds, you can do that right!?! Just keep focusing on five measely pounds. Each time you lose that 5 pounds, celebrate it. ( I did charms on a charm bracelet.) Like Rad said, the habits you learn along the way are invaluable, and the tips and tricks to keep the momentum going will get you through it. Sometimes you just have to "fake it 'til you make it" and go on auto-pilot. Hop on over to the General Board ☺️

em I weighed over 300 lbs when I first started WW online 10 years ago.I have lost around 150 lbs and have kept it off for 3 years.I did not lose it overnight of course and in the first year I didn't lose every week. Some months I would only lose 2 weeks, maintain one week and even have a slight gain one of the weeks.Like Deb said think about it in 5 lb increments. I was bad about when people complimented me on my WL anywhere I was in my journey I would say thank you but I still have so far to go.Finally a woman told me not to think of how far I had to go but take the compliment and think of how far I had come. I am going through periods of slight gains but the difference now is I know I won't gain back all the weight like I used to be scared I would do.I know there's no way I ever want to weigh that much again and I have lots more tools which you will learn than I did when I first started WW and know how to put the skids on the brakes. There is a wealth of information on this site from people who have gone through it and they will be glad to help you.

Welcome em! For the overwhelming feelings about how much weight I had to lose and how long it would take to do it - I still remember some great advice that I found on the old WW message boards - just focus on staying on plan, and the scale will take care of itself. For the overwhelming feelings about how to do this whole weight loss thing and get on board with the plan, it helped me when I came back to WW for the millionth time with all of my lost weight regained plus some, to start out very slowly. First week or more I just tracked what I was eating without worrying too much about points. Later I added drinking water. Later I added trying to stay within my weekly points. What helped me a whole lot to get me going this time and to help me maintain now for years - was Judy/ bbbearsmom's recommendation of the book by Judith Beck - The Beck Diet Solution. Judy works tirelessly to organize a daily thread here to work through the book with whoever wants to participate - see the Beck Book Review thread.

Hi Em and everyone. I am new as well, and feeling a bit overwhelmed. I will check out the general forum. I last was a WW member before 2018 and the program change. I had more points then and I understand there are less daily points now because of the more "free" foods on the list. I am in category BLUE and am confused between the different ones (blue, green and purple). The program seems more complicated now.
