Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Raining and a chilly feel, with the temp at 60. Rain for the whole day.
Pinky, what the heck, with the paper products??? The other store I shop at, which is quite a bit bigger than the store I used to work at, which is the one I was at the other day, anyway the other store, I am almost positive they have all the toweling I would need! That is why I was confused as to why there were empty shelves at the store. I always get the impression that whoever is in charge of ordering dropped the ball and didn't order correctly. I did that many times when I first started in Floral, and I would run out of certain floral displays. I think I asked where you go to PT. That is how it used to be with the people who live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, north of Wisconsin; they would come down to the Green Bay area for their health care. I think they have nice medical facilities up there now. I am sure you are doing excellent, with your therapy. How much longer do you have?
Marsha, I think the thing with college's is I am sure in the dorms they don't wear their masks. That would be like us wearing masks in our home. I look forward to the day the virus has the vaccine, but then there will be so many people that will refuse to get it, so will it ever end? What is Challah? I am sure it has been discussed here, before, but nothing is coming into my old lady brain. According to my phone calendar, your holiday is next Saturday. Is that a holiday that goes all weekend? You are a better woman/mother than me! I have to say, I really don't think I would make all that food, then haul it down there to his house. What a lot of work! But I guess, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do!!!
Anngie, I do feel guilty when I finish my post, to see it so long!!! Here it is a thread for booklovers, and 9 x's out of 10, my post has nothing to do with books! Here, there are a lot of procedures they do not give the time for in advance, what happens is patient scheduling calls the patient a day or 2 before the procedure and tells them when to be at the hospital. As with the shelves in the stores, with that and everything else we were doing prepandemic, I wonder if we will EVER go back to normal, or will this be our normal? About fried green tomatoes, my DH was raised on them, when they lived in more southern states (army brats), and he loves them. I have never had them, never made them, so it has been years since he had any. I am afraid to make them, that they would not turn out correctly.
Gareth of course we do understand how it is such an effort for your to type up a post! I am surprised that you have not stopped. I am not sure you mentioned it, but when do you start the shots, or did you already? We too are expecting 70, I think maybe 72 one day next week. But the whole week will be warmer than last week, at least 60 or so. I think the cold at night, plus rain, will get the leaves to turn faster. The symptoms were: slurring his words, not alert, hands jerking, sleeping a lot, then the urine being milky, and stinky, then finally the fever. The day I took him to the hospital, he could hardly get down the stairs, he was so weak. But along with that, with his lab work, it showed his is very anemic. All of his tests that have to do with anemia, (iron-iron binding, and ferritin, and trans ferritin) were all very low. Sometimes that is an indication of bleeding somewhere in the body, but most times just very anemic, and very dehydrated. And he does take iron and b12 pills. Strange, about your DH doctor.....does DH have any symptoms, or in any pain?
Anngie, I too was at work on 9/11, just got to work for 8 am, and we were all standing around a boom box in the lab reception area, just in total shock. Then we all took turns going down to our breakroom to watch it on TV. By noon time we were all up in the what is called the Kresge Center, which is an auditorium, for a prayer service. The auditorium was filled to overflow. I think what everyone was thinking, as we watched the attacks, was, was it over, or was there more planes to come, and maybe attack somewhere else in the country? Awful time for the US.
Carol, oh my, to have your mom die on that anniversary date, how sad. I think the thing with the gas stations was because everyone thought our gas would be cut off, so with everyone being in shock, that is the only thing they could think to do right away. I remember, my son in law, who was not my DSIL yet, furious, and wanted to go join the army right then and there, to go kill all those people. My DD had to do a lot of talking to him, to talk him down from his anger. I watched an excellent story yesterday, about all the boats that were needed, right after the first tower came down, to get all the people off the island. It was an amazing undertaking.
Robin, unreal how so many people you knew that would have normally been there!!!! Fate stepped in and saved all those people. I spent hours yesterday watching different shows about it. I finally had to turn it off, as I wanted to quit crying. I truly believe it, about you becoming a doctor. Did you ever have the urge, at this time in your life, to go back and get your medical degree? Oh my, I hope you found your Kindle. I would be lost without mine! I remember just a year or so ago, my kindle dying, and I was desperate, was trying to read on my cell, which was hell!
The doctor was waiting for DH urine culture result to come in, so they would know which antibiotic to use on him, then they would give it to him by IV. So he is still there, and as of last night, still not feeling the best. They get the fever down, and then a bit later it comes back. I am not even counting on him coming home today.
I should have been doing apartment cleaning yesterday, but spent way too many hours watching TV, all about 9/11. There were different perspectives about it that I hadn't seen before, so it was very informative. May do cleaning this morning.
Have a nice day everyone.

Karen, I think they are doing the right thing with DH. Too often they go from one antibiotic to another with UTI's, because they don't pick the right one the first time. I am sure it is because they don't know exactly what kind of bacteria it is. IV is definitely better for that for the first few days. I never wanted to go back to school to be a doctor. I have a master's degree, but in nothing that I used. I should have gotten that in accounting, but I got it in Rehabilitation Counseling. At the time, there wasn't much to do with that which really suited my personality. Now there are a lot more things, and more kinds of companies that hire people.
I downloaded the Libby app on my laptop, which is a Microsoft Surface Pro, which means I can detach the screen and use it as a tablet if I want. For some reason on Microsoft, the Kindle app is not free, and I was not paying for it. But with Libby, I could read the books I have on my "shelf" in the library, get any available ones also. I am reading The Winemaker's Wife, a book about WWII France, but goes back and forth in time to 2019 and back to 1940.
Karen, I don't want you to wait all weekend to find out what challah is. It is an egg bread that is usually made braided, but for Rosh Hashanah we usually have it round. Whether we celebrate 1 day or 2 more has to do with whether we are orthodox, conservative or reform. We celebrate 2 days. That's the great thing about both my DDIL's, they were both raised conservative also, so we have similar customs. Both DS's are going to the in-laws the first day, coming to me the 2nd. Small family celebrations for all. I would definitely cook and bring too, it is the idea that we want our children to uphold the traditions, and if this is the best way to do it, we do what we have to do. It's like if your DD did not celebrate Easter or Christmas, and the only way they would is if you brought the traditional foods.

And another gloomy, dreary, rainy day. At least it's the last one for awhile. So looking forward to the predicted coming sun and 70's starting tomorrow through the upcoming week. Can't wait to walk outdoors again. I turned the electric blanket on last night and then tuned it off when I went to bed. It was nice having a warm bed to crawl into.
Karen, sounds like a good idea not to rush DH's leaving the hospital. My DH has had no symptoms since it was a very low level of bacteria found so the Dr wasn't all that concerned by it. I had an eye injection already at my first appt with the specialist. I'm so hoping he sees improvement in that eye already by my next appt the end of the month when I have my next injection.
Robin, I'm pretty ignorant of Jewish traditions but from the sound of it they wouldn't be able to eat out like you could for Easter or Christmas instead of having to bring food. That would sure be easier than having to transport food that distance.

Yes, my mom had been sick for a while. She had uterine cancer. It had spread to her lungs. She was getting chemo for it, but it wasn't working so they stopped it. She died about 6 weeks later. It was a hard time. I was pretty miffed the terrorists picked that day to attack.
This is the south so our schools just have the Christian holidays off. I think, though, if a Jewish student or whatever other religion wants to take a day as a religious holiday, they are allowed. Isn't Passover usually around Easter?
Karen, don't worry about your long posts. I enjoy them and we rarely discuss books. I hope your DH gets to go home today. He has really had a time of it.

First, DH is staying through tonight at the Hotel, I mean the Hospital, lol! He is so anemic that they are giving him, in his words; a big bag of iron, by his IV. Plus the antibiotic that they must have figured out. So that is good, as the other day, taking him to the hospital, he could barely navigate the stairs, he was so weak. And of course, something like that, I can't help him.
Robin, I do too, as I do not want him at home if they are not sure what will work. Once you started describing the challah, I remember you and Marsha talking about it. How is it eaten, can you put a spread on it, like jam, or does it have to be eaten plain? I can think of all different ways to use it, but it might be against the religion. Are the better halves coming with your sons, to your house? Isn't that nice to know that Maddie will be raised in your religion? I feel sort of bad now that our DD's were raised in no religion, but I had them baptized in the Lutheran religion, since I turned against the Catholic religion. We joined the Lutheran church out by our old house later in life, so at least all the grand kids are baptized in the Lutheran religion. I worried that they did not get baptized, so the girls caved on that. DH was raised in the Nazarene religion, which is where we were married, but I decided I did not care for that religion, a little too different for my taste.
Gareth, a miserable day here too today, but I don't mind, since I am not going anywhere. I have all my fairy lights on, and the fireplace lit, but not heating. It is 63 here, I have the patio door opened and my bedroom window, as it is humid too, and doing my walking around the apartment I am very warm. I hope you start seeing some kind of improvement in your sight very soon. I used to think that with old age, we need our brain, and teeth, but I can add eyes to that, right? I am kind of surprised your DH does not need some kind of antibiotic, but hey, I love when the doctor says I do not need a med! The less we put in our body the better!
Carol, your mother sounds exactly what my mother went through!!! Wow. My mother had uterine cancer, which of course spread. She had radiation at first, and thought the doctor told her the cancer was gone, but I did not believe it, and sure enough it had spread. She ended up in a nursing home because my dad could not/would not care for her. That was in September. Their wedding anniversary was October 18th, she lived through that, and passed on the 25th. I am just amazed that both of our mother's had the same thing!! She passed in 2002. I think I am finally getting over the urge to go pick up the phone and giver her call, to chit chat. Here in the Midwest, we are the same as you, down south, with the schools just closing for catholic holiday's. Well, Christmas. Of course they don't close for Easter, as that is on a Sunday. I am not sure, but I think they close for Good Friday. And with your schools, I think the kids could get off if they asked for a Jewish holiday off. Fair is fair! Right now the in thing is giving the blacks off for their culture holidays.
Well I am in between my laps around the apartment, so far I have 50 minutes in, am pushing for a total of 80 minutes, so I better get going. It is very quiet today, and I am not feeling like cleaning, so I will probably stop back in later.

Gareth, some people do go out to eat for the holiday, assuming they are not Orthodox. Around here there are certain restaurants that serve a traditional holiday meal for both the New Year and Passover. There aren't as many in the younger generation that do the kind of cooking I do. Yes, my DDIL's are coming on Sunday, with Maddie. I am very happy they will both raise their children Jewish, that is a real bonus when that happens. My older DS is leasing a car, but I don't know if he will get it before the weekend, but it would be great for them if they could. I am happy for them that they decided to do this, it will give them much more freedom, they can visit us, their friends, and not be tied down to when my younger DS is available, or they can take his car.
Karen, for Rosh Hashanah, it is traditional to have honey on the Challah. We eat the left overs for breakfast, and it is great either toasted with butter and jam, or made into french toast. I try not to have it around too often because it is much too addictive. Sorry your DH has to have the iron too, I guess extra red blood cells. When my DH donates blood they usually spin it and take the red blood cells because he is O negative, and they can give that to anyone. He can only give every 3 months.
Carol, usually Easter and Passover are at the same time, but every once in a while they are not because the Hebrew calendar has a leap month, so they end up spread apart. Our schools close Good Friday, and also, not that it is a holiday, but they say "Easter Monday", so people who are visiting family don't have to travel back on Easter. There are 2 reasons why our school year goes until the end of June, one is that we don't start until after Labor Day, the other is that we get all those holidays, not only then, but also President's Week. which was the week we used to go away with the kids. I know from our cruises we went on that the only schools that took off President's Week were NY/NJ, Massachusetts, and Michigan. Don't ask me why, but those are the ones. We do not have spring break in March, unless it is the end of March because that's when Passover is.

Good morning. Rain has cleared out and the sky is blue. Going up into the 70's today.
Robin, that is too bad that you were not able to go into medicine. I think you would have been super in that field. I have been reading about Freddie Mercury, as I think I mentioned I am right now obsessed with Queen, anyway, about Fred, sad that he was one of the first celebrity to die from HIV/AIDS, when now, there is so much help for the disease, you never hear of anyone dying from it. I just saw an ad on TV for a pill you can get to hedge against getting it. You never know, you could have gone off into one of the fields of medical research! Yay for your DH for donating plasma! I tried once, about 10 yrs ago, but they would not take me, because I have only 1 kidney.
Hi to Gareth, Pinky, Carol, Anngie, and Marsha.
DH called last night, sure that he is coming home today. I will wait for his call, then go up there. I think he wants to get home before the Packer game at noon. I have mixed feelings about the game. I am happy the season is finally here, it does seem surreal, to have them playing, both because nothing else is normal, and because there was no preseason, to ease us into the season. I do not like the players doing the unity thing right before kickoff, as they are getting paid to play the game, nothing else. If I was at my old job, and did that on the clock, I do not think my boss would take kindly to that. Just my personal thoughts, PLEASE! Nobody beat up on me for that.
Have a nice Sunday everyone.

Finally a beautiful, sunny morning! It's a cool 50ΒΊ though getting into the 70's later. We like to walk first thing but we'll wait and walk later morning when it's warmer. Yesterday afternoon the sun kept peeking out and was nice so we did get to get out and walk. Nice walking outdoors again.
What's with the pumpkin shortage now? Everyone has been talking on FB about it so I looked for it. Not a can to be found in HyVee or WM. I usually always keep a can in the pantry. Checked this morning and see I do have one so think I'll make a crustless pumpkin pie later. I'm also trying a spaghetti pie recipe that sounds good.
Karen, my DS is such a packer's fan. He feels the same as you and says as much as he loves football he doesn't even want to watch football anymore after they're all doing that. Glad to hear that DH is better and coming home.

Looks like it will be a nice day here for the baby shower, once I get there I will see how long I will stay.
Karen, DH just remarked that if this were a real home game, we would already be in the car on the way to the stadium. And, we end up getting home at 5:00, so a really long day. As far as the unity thing goes, I think it's the right thing to do. There are just so many black football players, and they are not advocating violence, maybe seeing them showing unity will help. There was an article in our newspaper about how those who ended up doing the damage of store, breaking windows, in Manhattan were all white. I know that wasn't necessarily the case of what you saw in California, and I have no idea about other places.
I have errands to do on my way home today, and things to get done before I go. If I am home early enough I will cook my brisket, although now that I am thinking of it, maybe I will throw it in the freezer, take it out at the end of the week and make it, because I like to slice it cold, then reheat.

There is a sweet woman at church who is going through the exact same thing as my mom. They said she was cancer free, then found some more and had radiation. She had been doing really well and now there are places on her lungs. I, of course, have not said that is what my mom went through. It just tears me up inside because she is such a good person. I hope she gets more time. Yes, when things happen especially with my kids, I wish my mom and dad were around to see.
DGS started swimming lessons yesterday. It did not go well. He cried a lot. DD said he does not handle new things well. Finally, he got in the water and splashed some. For the first 3 weeks, a parent has to be in the water with the kids, then after that no parent in the water, but one has to be there available. Because of Covid, only parent is allowed to be there.
Karen, I hope your DH gets home in time for the game. I think the Cowboys are playing, but not really sure.
You know, people say the BLM people are the ones who vandalized, but really, do they know for sure? Anyone could have shown up and said they were there for a rally and not really care about it and just wanted to make trouble. You never know. I have no problem with the football players showing unity.

Karen, think I misunderstood what you were saying about the football players. I thought you were talking about taking a knee during the national anthem which upsets my DS.

Gareth, that is not what she was talking about, but I think one of the teams did walk off the field for the anthem, and I think that is wrong.
Carol, I wasn't saying these people were not BLM people, it's just that they were not black. Most of the people marching in NYC were not, in the peaceful marches.
