Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. A little cloudy today, with high of 67, 50 right now.
Gareth, I have not heard anything of a pumpkin shortage. I know all the local farmers are pushing their pumpkin picking times, sounds like they are ok with their crop. I do not know about the canned stuff. Have you noticed any trees/leaves changing by you? We have a few trees in the woods here across the field that are changing pretty nice so far.
Robin, just want to mention, about the violence and looting, back this summer, which you said were white people, that is not true for what happened in our little city. It was a majority of black men. And to be fair, I am certain it was not even BLM, I think it was just local thugs, but for sure they were mostly black. In the peaceful marches, in GB, were mixed races.
Carol, oh that poor woman at your church, I feel so bad for her. That is a good idea of your DD to get DGS into water at a young age. I bet he will really take to it eventually. About the players and their show of unity, I just kept the TV off till I knew they had started the game, but did turn it off for awhile, so I could take my walks.
DH did not come home yesterday. With some of his blood work still low, the doctor was trying to figure that out, and then DH got sick. Nauseous, vomiting, and had the sweats. He called me last night just a mess. The pain was so bad they gave him morphine. So, I really, really do not know what will go on today. He said last night that he is coming home today, but I told him I do not want him coming home till this is all straightened out.
Something happened to me yesterday, that I am pretty sure has never happened, while doing WW. By the time I was done with my little supper, I had 6 points left on my dailies. I was able to use 4, and just let WW roll the others over. I am on the Blue program, so I get 23 points for my daily points. I have started, from watching a page on FB of a woman who puts on there her eating plan, her WW daily food, plus she counts calories, so I started doing that also. At first I thought she was a freak, and had too much time on her hands, lol, but as I kept watching her page every day, it makes sense, as you probably all know, we can eat a lot of 0 or low point food, but eat a lot of calories. Good thing I am retired, or I would not have that kind of time to sit and do all that.
Hi to all, hope you all can make it back here today, from, I hope a very nice weekend.

Karen, I was only talking about in NY. There were 7 who had pictures in the newspaper, they were young people, one who supposedly had a lot of money she was spending. Sorry to hear about your DH still not feeling well. I hope they can figure it out.
I have not read about a pumpkin shortage yet. I guess I must have skimmed one of the posts, I missed that yesterday.
My cell phone is ringing upstairs, I must go up and see who it is.

Beautiful sunny morning. It's a little hazy the weatherman says from all the fires out west. Amazes me that it can affect our atmosphere here too from so far away. Looking forward to walking when DH gets home.
DH loved the baked spaghetti I made yesterday which really surprised me. He doesn't really like lasagna so I thought he'd think it was too much like it. It was really good. I'm looking forward to the leftovers today.
Karen, it was canned pumpkin I was talking about. Yes, I've noticed some trees changing color already. Too soon for that! Your poor DH has sure been through it. Why can't the Drs figure out what's going on? Have you thought of going to Mayo clinic? They're awesome and bet they could get to the bottom of it.

Karen, so sorry your DH is still feeling bad. I hope the drs. find out what is going on soon.
DH watched part of the Cowboys game, but I didn't. I'm not really interested.
I'm reading The Glass Hotel. It is by the author of Station 11 which I love. This is different from it, but it gets you hooked.
The women's Bible study is going to start tomorrow. I'm not sure about it. Probably I will go and see what sort of precautions are in place. Some of the women have been going to the church services and I am not sure how seriously they take the virus. If masks aren't required or if there is not social distancing, I will leave.
I haven't heard of a pumpkin shortage either, but we are not pumpkin fans.

Hello all. I actually had a fairly productive weekend. On Saturday dh and I went to the store we like for produce and it is next to a JoAnn’s so I ran in there and found some fabric for masks. I wanted to make some black ones and I found a few others that I will make also. I also made a batch of my holiday challah. Sunday morning I got up early (of course, because why would Mitzi let me sleep past 6?) and made another batch of Challah. Then I spent the afternoon making masks. I made 3 black ones for me, a blue one for dh (who still isn’t sure he likes the cloth ones), and when I was at the store I saw some fabric with Stars of David so I made one for each of my former Rabbi and her husband who are our good friends. We dropped them off last night and they loved them. I don’t think I would wear them, it’s a bit too much advertising for me, but who better to wear a blatantly Jewish mask than a Rabbi? By then I was sore from hunching over the sewing machine so the other fabric will have to wait. I have black with colored polka dots and a neutral beige pattern. I wish I had bought more solid black.
DD had a good time at the bachelor/bachelorette party but she has an appointment for a covid test on Tuesday that she set up before she left Madison, and she is thinking she should have a follow up one in a week after that just to be sure. She said masks were worn when they left the house but not when they were at home, and they went to dinner at a restaurant, the girls went to a wine tasting, and the guys to a driving range so there were all kinds of possible contamination points. DH said I hope nobody gets it. I said if they all get it then we won’t have to worry about them having it when we go to the wedding at the end of October – they will likely be over it and still resistant at that point. All of dfdil's sisters were there and a bil and a future bil, and one bil was there just for the driving range, so if anyone gets it it will probably cover the whole family.
We talked to ds last night about this weekend’s dinner and I think that the logistics of what he is thinking for Saturday aren’t realistic. They are driving 3 hours each way to go look at their venue (and they plan to leave the house 6am) plus time to walk around, plus they will have to stop and eat, then when they get home dfdil is still planning to see her seamstress. I don’t see them being ready to eat before 7pm and that means a dinner that is not relaxed because we will still have a 90 minute drive home. So we suggested Sunday and he is working but he said until 4pm. DH told him if he can commit to finishing work by 4pm we can do it then, we’ll come down and eat a little earlier and have time to relax and visit and still get home by 9 or so. So he’s checking his calendar and will get in touch with us hopefully tonight.
Karen – I think in Madison the quarantined dorms are supposed to wear masks when they leave their rooms, and they are only supposed to leave their rooms to go get food (and I imagine go to the bathroom and do laundry). Whether they are or not is another story, it probably depends on the R.A. Which is kind of funny when you think about the fact that most R.A.’s never did anything and boy aren’t they surprised that this year they have to work!). I am cooking the same as I would cook if we didn’t see ds for dinner – I have a stockpile of soup in my freezer, perhaps I made an extra batch of Challah so I can bring a big loaf down to him, but the brisket and dessert I’d do anyway. This way hopefully I can get them to do potatoes and a veggie so I will actually have less work, or maybe I will make it with dfdil before ds comes home from work.
Gareth – I saw plenty of pumpkins when dh and I were at the store on Saturday and I also saw them last week at the grocery store, so I don’t think there is a shortage here. Oh you meant canned pumpkin. Hahaha. Sorry.
It seemed to me that the BLM protests were all peaceful, the riots came after and were opportunistic. Think about Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X. Two advocates for civil rights at the same time with the same goal but different methodology. Now we revere MLK, but not so much Malcom X.
Re the national anthem – I did not see the opening of the Packer game but I read that the team voted to stay in the locker room for the national anthem. It sounded like they were going to sing the anthem but did not want the distraction of taking a knee, but it was a show of unity them all together in the locker room.
Karen - oh so sorry dh is still not doing better! When did they start his antibiotic? I hope he shows improvement today but I agree, he should stay there until he is better, otherwise you will just be bringing him right back. Gareth had a good suggestion about Mayo. Or maybe Froedert.
Carol – I liked Station 11. I’ll have to look for The Gladd Hotel.
Books: I'm really liking The Testaments. Much more than I thought I would considering I was a bit ambivilant about The Handmaid's Tale. Also almost done with the Vince Flynn audio - I think by the end of this week.

Hello all!
Karen, I’m so sorry DH isn’t any better - I was hoping he would be. Maybe delving into this deeper with other professionals is the way to go. I wonder if it has to be by referral. This makes me think of the stories of people having surgery, then never ending pain, just to find out the surgeon left a tool or something behind! Have you ever heard those stories?
About the football games. All I can say is, in all the times I’ve wanted to hear people’s opinions, it was never from athletes or the entertainment industry. I sometimes wonder if doing all these things isn’t further dividing the country instead of bringing it together.
Carol, how many women usually attend the Bible study? Is it in someone’s home or at the church? My two grandsons - ages 2 & 3 are also taking swimming lessons. The first week, one cried the other one didn’t, the second week it was reversed, and the third week they both loved it! Now they float on their backs and can stay under water for five seconds. So far, so good.
Gareth, now I’m going to look for canned pumpkin! I had a can already so yesterday I baked pumpkin bread. I gave one loaf away to neighbors and will freeze slices from the other loaf.
Robin, thanks for the info on Challah. I’m glad I can count on you and Marsha to explain things. Now I’m going to google orthodox, conservative & reform.
Marsha, glad DD had a nice time. I hope it works out for Sunday. It seems DS was at least receptive to the idea.
Hi Pinky!

It's downright crazy around here. DH is getting things ready to harvest--so we are off and running. We did have an appointment with our lawyer this morning as we are finalizing our will. So much to think about with the crop insurance and seed business and then with owning land and all. Think we have come up with a pretty good plan. We thought we would be signing it today but had to make a few changes first.
While we were there I got a text from my DF that her mother had passed away. It was expected but still hard. Then I got a text from another of my friends that the son of another friend has been very ill. He has been tested twice for COVID with negative results. They have finally decided that it is mold from a grain bin he was cleaning out and has affected his lungs. They thought he would have to have surgery but have decided now that he can be treated orally for a lung fungus brought on by cleaning the moldy grain bin. He is 32 years old and been dealing with this for a month now, but finally have an answer at least. While his parents were with him at the emergency room today his mom (my friend) had an heart attack and she was taken by ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital. I haven't heard how she is doing. Also see Karens personal message. Praying for all.
There is been other stuff over the weekend which does not affect me personally but very tragic. Our Attorney General hit a man walking on the road and killed him---its been pretty hush hush so far so do not know the exact details. Also a plane crashed about an hour and half from us and killed a couple. And we had a 21 year old killed in a neighboring town when he was trying to break some corn loose in a bin and fell in. He suffocated by falling into the corn and it completely surrounded him giving him no air to breath. So much sadness and tragedy for a lot of families around here. I feel so bad and can not wrap my head around all that has happened in the last 2 days.
Sorry I am a Debbie Downer today but just so darn sad..

Anngie, if you have netflix, watch the 4 part mini-series Unorthodox. There are those who are as Orthodox as that, but also what they consider "modern Orthodox", that still follow many of the things, but still to a lesser degree.
Gareth, great minds think alike. I read Karen's message before what you wrote, and I also suggested the Mayo Clinic. My DDIL's sister was having major intestinal issues, her father is a gastroenterologist in a big practice, and they couldn't figure it out, so they took her to the Mayo clinic. My grandfather and uncle used to go there from Canada all the time. They were never happy with the socialized medicine there.
Marsha, I hope something can work out for Sunday for you. I bought a black mask from the dollar store, actually 99 cents and up, and of course everything is up, but for $2.49, I would never sew my own.

Oh Pinky, so sorry for all those tragedies, if it's not one thing it's another. I can understand the issues with the business. I have lost track of how many children you have, but I know at least one son works in the business, so that makes it harder. Now that I work in DH's office, I feel like I can write the wills myself, but know that there are often things that are difficult decisions to make.
