Do you think depression, how you feel about yourself such as self-esteem, self-confidence affect your eating and body size?

From personal experience I've had depression affect my weight and body size. For years I was too depressed to get myself organized to lose my excess weight, being depressed can lead to me eating more. I get winter depression and over the fall and winter I seem to get hungry more and want the comfort for food more. As for self-confidence I'm sure how confident I feel about my ability to maintain my goal weight affects how well I do.

I think mental attitude is the game changer. The body follows the mind...not the other way around.
Your reality is your truth so...
I know that my emotions impact my food choices. They are not the ONLY thing that motivate my choices but they are a big part of it. That said...good and bad emotions/feeling/thoughts/situations are equally able to have me eating off plan. I can overeat when celebrating or despondent.
So, for me, it is having my mind "in the game" to be able to succeed and to stay positive/happy/making wise food choices.

I have had bouts of depression from clinical to post partum to Seasonal Affected Disorder. They absolutely have had an impact on my weight journey. I donβt usually overeat during depressive episodes but I cannot focus on weight control strategies during those times. Medication helped with all except the SAD. The game changer for me has been the BBR. It forced me to focus on the tools, the tools helped me focus on my credits, prayer, meditation and the tracking the behaviors that I can control. Oh yeah. I hit my highest weight when I was depressed and isolated after moving away from home the first time.

I agree that depression does play a role in what we weigh. The worst time for me is winter, not sure if its SAD but easy for me to gain weight because of being inside all the time with shorter days and comfort food. Wondered if anyone uses a special light for SAD?
Look what happened to a lot of people during the Pandemic when we had to stay inside for weeks, many people I know gained weight which was probably tied in with depression because of what was happening at that time.

mac, I bought a big "sun" light sometime before 1995 and used it up until this past spring when it broke and couldn't be fixed. I now I have a small one I use that I found through Amazon. I know the big light worked. When I first had it I used it all day and then I wouldn't stop talking so I know it affected me. Eventually I started to use it all year around because my SAD starts in mid/late August and I would forget to set it up in time. Whether this smaller one will also work I don't know. Really don't have a way to measure it to compare my mood with/without it (or I don't want to bother to set up a test). I have it on the table where I sit and eat, read, and am on the computer so it is a number of hours a day. I don't turn it on after four in the afternoon because of concern its use might keep me up at night. The bright light is nice to have around in the winter. I got a verilux HappyLight Touch, model VT32. I like it and it is easy to use. It's called a LED Energy Lamp. On Amazon search on "natural lights." That will also work with Google although you will also get hits about light beer.

bbbearsmom, Thanks for your information. Years ago Mayo Clinic encouraged their patients to use a light and also sold them, I haven't seen them in a while up there so I wondered if they were still being used. I have to be real careful with bright light as it gives me a migraine.
