Thinking Mistake #4: Emotional Reasoning
You think your ideas are true even though objective evidence says not.
"Since I feel like a failure for having strayed, I really must be a failure."
"I feel like I just have to have something sweet right now."
How are you doing with your emotional reasoning?

I am never a failure. I just have some moments where I don't make the best choices but I usually get right back on plan. I never have to have anything other than water. Tiredness, however, may give me a lapse of memory and I will eat things without taking the time to consider what I am doing. That is how I get into trouble.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

When I hit the pause button on this thought and take the time to figure out what caused this feeling, I can put a stop to rationalizing off plan eating. Typically it is stress or as jamescat1 noted, I am tired. Trying to fix either of those situations with food is where I will stumble from time to time. Having a strong resistance muscle is really important for this thinking error.

Ah, the pause button. That's the key because if I take time to think about my choices, I usually make a good choice. Yesterday, I baked my first batch of Christmas cookies. I had been putting it off because I doubted my ability to stay away from them. I did eat 2 cookies but tracked them and moved on. I'm happy that's all I had and I feel stronger to resist today. I'm not going to bake anymore cookies which is a huge drop for me. Stress is a big factor for me too as is lack of sleep.

So many good ideas, love the "pause" button. I think I need one of those.
Colleen: You reminded me why I should be working on why I'm feeling the way I'm feeling right now.
Linda: Good work with the cookies. Still haven't gotten into the ones I baked for my husband. Do have a few the neighbor gave us. Am having one of those at a time and that is working out.

Hello everyone
I do this if tired or stressed. Tell myself I need food. Getting better at this but still fall into this thinking at times
I am doing well at tracking. Today is day # 5. Back into the swing. 😀😀
Linda - thank you for your opinion on the Regis Beigh tile. The big piece looks great. Great job with the cookies.

I don't normally have a big problem with this but today we were doing a lot of running around and it was around 1:30 so we decided to eat lunch out.I had more than I normally do and felt comfortable afterwards but then we came home and I went for a walk and it seemed the farther I walked the fuller I became.I did cave in to 3 bites of a homemade cookie DH brought me from the bank.I don't remember sugar tasting so sweet.Anyway I'm good for another yr on the cookies. We ate so late neither of us are hungry and if I do eat it will be a light healthy snack.
Have a great weekend all!

If I can delay just long enough using whatever strategy, often a temporary distraction, I can usually work past it. Delay and distract.
I love jamescat1's belief that "I'm never a failure" - just moments when I don't make the best choices.
Happy Holidays!

When I am stressed or tired (like this week!), being hungry does not make things better. Of course, neither does overeating. I have to use hunger cues, and the clock to know whether or not it is appropriate to eat. But under eating only adds to the tired and stress feelings.
I do need to put some thought into:
"Since I feel like a failure for having strayed, I really must be a failure."
as I do tend to be hard on myself, not just with respect to diet, but also in other areas.
