4. Better bone density Weight-bearing exercise such as walking or jogging can help increase the strength of bones and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures. According to The National Osteoporosis Society, one in two women and one in five men will break a bone due to osteoporosis.
5. Reduced risk of developing dementia Being sedentary in later years can increase the risk of developing dementia, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. The study, which analyzed more than 1,600 older adults over five years, found that those who did not exercise were more likely to develop dementia than those who did.
Comments? My weight bearing exercises are walking and dancing. What are yours? Exercise seems to be so good for so many things, helping reduce the risk of a lot of different diseases plus well being of body and mind. What are your main reasons for exercising?

Currently, weight bearing exercise is walking.
I tend to look at exercise as something I'm supposed to do because it is good for me (and I do agree it IS good for me!). The question reminded me it would be helpful to me to look at this in a different way. One of those things I can try harder to be thankful for what I'm able to do, phrase it as "I get to"...walk, dance, stretch...etc. I continue to remind myself that I now have lots of time in the day - I really don't have to give up anything else in order to exercise.

I walk...have used elliptical and weight trained in the past. I exercise to be fit for walking when on vacation or in the USA or with family again!

I have several reasons for exercising. I guess the main one is to build up strength so it is easier to get around and do things. I also do it as part of being healthy and keeping my bones strong. It is supposed to help with the stiffness of arthritis, although I'm not sure I see much difference there. I guess it does help some. The weight loss has helped too. Anyway I want to do everything I can to be able to live out here where I do.

Cherry, I took a page from your book & danced the while I was doing a bit of housework yesterday. Listened to Chubby Checker's "Twist" & a few other dance tunes. Also, did a few leg lifts before bed. I am really trying to get back in the game!

My main exercise is walking. I see it as a enjoyable thing I do rather than a have to thing I do. I walk out through a protected wetland area and see lots of birds. Currently I have been seeing bald eagles and herons in the area. Herons are pretty common but the bald eagles are a real treat. I think the walking made it easier to transition from a desk job to a job where I am on my feet all day.

These are both disturbing…
During the 1960s when I first married, I was on the pill for about five years. It wasn’t the very first version of the pill, which (if I remember correctly) contained 10 whatever-the-measurement was of the hormone; the one I took had 5. It was a big improvement according to what I read at the time. However, I was warned not to take it more than five years (which was approximately the length of time I did) plus that there was an increased chance of developing osteoporosis in my later years. Moreover, my mother, who never took any kind of hormone, fell a few times in her later years (I have no idea whether she ever asked about osteoporosis). So here I am in my senior years, wondering about the strength of my bones. I've mentioned that I hav’n't been walking much at all since the pandemic…
About being sedentary… I teach and tutor on Zoom. I attend morning services (7:15 to 8:00 Monday through Friday) on Zoom. I go to a study group 8:30 to 9:30 on Zoom. I register for online classes. I sit in front of my computer almost all day long. Sedentary? I dunno; if you look it up in the dictionary, is my picture there? I don’t want to develop dementia. I have an active brain; I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose its functioning…
