We listen to the police scanner. They just did a broadcast about a car that was stolen overnight: the keys were in it. In our town and the surrounding towns this happens with some frequency. A week or so ago there was an article in our paper about the police chief of the town next to us pleading with people to lock their cars if they are parked outside and to please not leave your keys in your car.
What are these people thinking leaving the keys in their car?

Did anyone else just remember way back when...
I remember as a kid, keys were always left in the visor.

We never did that. I don't remember if we would lock the cars sitting on the driveway. Around here besides the locals we have groups that come in from out of town and overnight they go driveway to driveway seeing if cars are unlocked so they can steal stuff from them, and to check for keys so they can steal the car/truck.

The same thing happens here. I'm surprised at what people leave in their cars and then they don't bother to lock the vehicle. Guns, golf clubs, money, phones, credit cards and clothes are some of the items I've heard were stolen. These groups rotate through neighborhoods on a regular basis; I'm surprised people don't learn from others and either remove the items or lock the vehicle.

We won't even park in the driveway. Of course, having a full basement I don't need the storage space that most do with their garage. We also lock the cars in the garage overnight.

Where I live we're having an epidemic of stolen and vandalized vehicles. Even if you lock your car and remove all valuables from it, you may come out one morning and it's smashed to smithereens or gone. Almost every morning on Next Door Neighbor, "my car was vandalized!"
People are also tucking glass bottles or broken glass behind people's tires in parking lots. I mean - what thrill do you get out of that?

I never use to lock my care until one morning I went out and someone had rummaged through the glove box and left all the stuff on the floor. I never keep anything of value in my car anyway. I don't live in that house or town anymore. I live out in the middle of corn fields and now I lock my car all the time. I doubt anyone would try it here (we have a BIG yard light on that side of the house) but you never know!
FYI, I never left the keys in the car. That's just an invitation to have it taken!

We've had 2 vehicles broken into: a mini-van when we lived at an apartment complex- they tried to hotwire it and just broke the steering column then left. The 2nd was here at our home, Ron always left his vehicle unlocked and he used to smoke at the time, so someone "broke in" and stole cigarettes, lighter, some cash, and just totally ransacked the glove box with papers in it and ripped them up and tossed them all over the car (insurance, registration, etc), ripped the cover off the center console and ripped the sin visors off. Bad enough they stole things, but to be destructive as well - ugh.

We've had instances in the winter where people in an apt. complex will go out, start their cars, and then go back inside while they warm up. A theft ring sweeps in with a car hauler and can scoop up 2-5 cars before the owners know what's happened to them. The thieves have cased the place beforehand and know the residents' work and school schedules. Most of the cars end up in chop shops. If your car is ever stolen in TN, I would suggest looking for it in Grundy Co., but know that nearly every resident owns a firearm.
