I remember when people sitting in the audience of a talk show would clap their hands together instead of screaming very LOUD.
We were in the audience of the Phil Donahue show a few years ago and we applauded.
Do they put up a sign now that says scream and holler? Or, am I just a cranky old lady?

I blame Jerry Springer and Maury Povich for the unhinged audience "participation" crap.

It is crap. That describes it perfectly. Kind of describes the whole show these days.
I'm surprised late night talk show guys (it's always guys) don't have sore throats all the time.
Johnny Carson or David Letterman didn't have to scream.
Perhaps Jerry and Maury need the audience to be part of the show. Carson, Letterman, and Jack Parr were able to go it alone and still get great ratings.
