BBR Forward
The forward states that this book, The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck is “Based on the techniques of Cognitive Therapy, it helps you learn to think differently so you can change your eating behavior – not just in the short run, but for the rest of your life.” The forward goes on and says that while people can change their behavior those changes don’t last unless they also change their thinking.
While people often know what they need to do to lose weight and then maintain the weight loss they don’t always know “how to do these things or they don’t know how to consistently get themselves to do these things. In countering this Judith Beck has identified the key thinking distortions and calls them “sabotaging thoughts.” Examples of these are: Rationalization (I had a rough day I deserve this), underestimating consequences (Calories don’t count on Christmas), self-deluded thinking (I’ll make up for it the rest of the week), arbitrary rules (It is my birthday I have to celebrate with food), mind-reading (Patty made these and she’ll feel bad if I don’t have one or two), and exaggeration (I need to eat all of this because I might get hungry).
This program will teach you to correct these distortions, how to solve diet- and non-diet-related problems, and how to motivate yourself to do what you need to do.
Aaron T. Beck, M. D. wrote the forward. He was the (or one of the) originators of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Judith Beck’s father.
What do you think about the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management?
What sabotaging thoughts have you had?

I'm a firm believer in the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management. I know it is true for me. It is what has made the difference between the two times I gained my weight back and the success I've had so far this time losing weight and maintaining goal.
One of my sabotaging thoughts is that "I've gotten away with overeating before so I'll get away with it this time." Another one I give into is that I'll eat if I'm feeling stressed sometimes (Don't want to put up with this feeling any longer.)

bbbearsmom , thx for a great description and kick off. What do you think about the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management? I think it absolutely does. I think I tend to change my behaviors, a good day, a good week, good exercise, a 20 pound weight loss, but I don’t sustain those behaviors. I’m trying to learn to change my thinking daily so I’m not so exhausted about choices and so that I have a simple path towards good health as I age. What sabotaging thoughts have you had? I think I tend to err towards rationalization “I feel x today, I need this”, to deluded thinking “book club/social situations isn’t book club without 2 glasses of wine and unlimited buffet eating”, to underestimating consequences “ it’s summer and I’m walking outside everyday and I can eat anything I want.” (Thought the woman who gained weight this summer.) I’m trying to change my thinking so I can anticipate ST and breeze by them with better thinking. I feel disappointed that I’m not at goal, but I understand I haven’t thought my way to it in a consistent manner and I am still motivated to try. The success of this group, walking the walk, is encouraging. NSV: Last night at book club I did not drink wine and did not overindulge and I’m hopeful the scale will reflect this on Friday’s weigh in.

What do you think about the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management? * I definitely believe our thinking governs our success/ failure with weight management. It's helped me a lot to learn the Beck Principles and apply them to my diet. It helped me to get to goal and maintain my weight at the present time.
What sabotaging thoughts have you had? * I continue to get sabotaging thoughts about the celebration cake. Good thing my DD shopped for me today because I was thinking about wandering into the bakery to put some cake in my cart.😁

What do you think about the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management? I think most of successful weight loss is related to changing how one thinks about food. It also includes making time to prepare healthy OP meals, and exercise, but I think you can also eat healthily and exercise and still be overweight so... Every bite adds up, that's the bottom line.
What sabotaging thoughts have you had? Lately I've been giving in to deluded thoughts (I've been doing good so I can have this treat and it wont even show up on the scale), justification thoughts (I feel stressed out right now and I need a treat).

What do you think about the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management? Losing weight, to me, is mentally driven. If my mind is set correctly my body follows. If I let frustration in it can derail me so after decades of this am fairly well set mentally to stick the course.
What sabotaging thoughts have you had? Most recently, "Go ahead and have *X* because those calories will shake up your metabolism and help you lose weight." So I have whatever it is and it might...eventually see me lower on the scale...after I drop those pounds that found me with the extra calorie intake...

What do you think about the idea that our thinking governs our success/failure with weight management? I know for certain that my mind is the captain of this ship. If I believe I can, then I will try. If I believe I cannot, then I will not.
What sabotaging thoughts have you had? Can I keep at this? How long will it be before something will distract me or I become cocky and stop doing the things that are necessary in order for me to maintain my goals whether they’re related to weight or life in general?
