Another day, another dollar. I think that saying use to make sense. Can you imagine how anyone anytime lived on a dollar? How about sharing how much you made at some of your first jobs and/or the early pay checks when you got married? I will have to think about that & tell you later.
Last night was a fun time. Six of us, DD, SIL, GS, & the 3 of us went out for Don's birthday. Then all came back to the house for cake & ice cream.
Our former AK current/OK DD texted us that she will be getting married again on 2/22/22 in Las Vegas. Don't think I would be interested in a second marriage ever, but I'm a lot older than she is... & not living alone. Even when I was younger, I never thought I would want to. It can be easy to say what you would or wouldn't do until you're in that situation. I am happy for her.
What are your plans for today? Mary, will you be knitting? Will you be sewing or bummin' Phyl - or maybe some of both? How about you Shragae, what's on your plate? And Marm, I hope you are picking up your computer & will be back with us? Nothing planned here except to do my exercises & use the heating pad. I am so happy to stay home - a day for R&R!

Good morning Marlene, Phyl, Shragae, Marm (if your computer is back and running again for you), and all others maintaining or struggling to maintain, or just stopping in to read. Please join us again.
Marlene, it makes sense for you to continue until Marm returns. However, if the shop doesn’t get to her computer soon it might go on longer than we expect. Then her week will be cut short. So, if she doesn’t get it back by tomorrow night (Sat.), I think I should start it for Sunday and just switch weeks with her. We can always go back and fix the order on the next round if that is important. Okay?
So, Marlene, you have another wedding in your family! Will you be attending, or is this just a private affair for them? Sounds like that, being in Las Vegas. I’m like you, I would never consider marrying again, especially at this stage in my life. And, luckily, having a good, long marriage of over 60 years, I never had to consider the matter coming up. Both of my DD’s first marriages broke up after having their children, and their second marriages were supported by us. I guess every situation is different and needs to be considered. There is one lady living here, probably 5 years younger than me, whose DH passed 3-4 years ago, who now has a new companion and appears to be “in love” again, traveling together, etc. “To each their own….” I say.
My knitting group is not meeting right now, since the organization giving us space to meet, has moved to a new location and is not ready for us. They are remodeling, so it will be a while, and unless someone else in our group finds another place to meet, we won’t be doing our thing on Fridays. But today, DGD will be coming here for some time together. Dd says she is recovered from her bronchitis and I trust that is true. She has been back to work, etc., and I have been mixing with people living here regularly so I am not concerned. Yesterday about 25 from here went out for lunch together. It was a good time.
Malene, I don’t have anything to contribute about early jobs and wages. My small town offered no opportunities for work when I was growing up. I have no recollection of what I was paid for my first office job after 2 years of college and before my first pregnancy. I did not have a work career to speak of. I was a stay at home mom until our youngest was about 12, and then at that time I was a part-time church secretary for 10 years. Again, I don’t remember my wages, but probably pretty minimal. We always relied on DH’s salary to support us. Now it’s time for me to get moving, starting with breakfast. BBL

I plan a nice quiet day. My son has to take the car to go to work. So most likely I will read a good book. The library got one in that I had requested some time ago. It is a book by Katie Couric and is supposedly full of gossip LOL.
I'll also be taking my dog Dash for some nice walks. We're supposed to have a high of 70 today which should be beautiful afternoon weather before a colder front moves in.
I ordered some sneakers online last weekend. $150 shoes for $50. I do love a bargain! They should arrive today or tomorrow so I'll have to start breaking them in.
I have no desire to remarry. I'm at a stage in my life when I like peace and quiet and status quo. My life is pretty great the way it is and I'm not looking for any changes...
My little dog is sleeping on top of a blanket. So sweet!

Well, my stay at home changed courses - my fault. I have needed a new wallet for some time, so I was browsing Kohl's web site & found one that I liked. We had a 30% off coupon that DH was itching to use, so off we went to Waukesha. What should have been an easy shopping trip anywhere else doesn't happen at Kohl's - at least not for me. I found the wallet in black but DH saw the same one that was red & I got that one. Then he wanted to go to Woodmen's for cheap gas, & on the way I transferred all my stuff to the new wallet. When I got to the change purse, I couldn't open that latch. Don couldn't either. So back to Kohl's to get a black one. I walked up to counter where we have always taken returns to be told I should go through check out. I got the black wallet & when I went back to check out the line was so long & only two checkers. One was tied up with some problem so there was only one other cashier taking customers. There was a long line waiting to check out & the gal in front of me had an over-flowing loaded cart. By the time I was first in line, the gal at what use to be the return counter said I could come to her. I was rather upset by this time & told her she had refused to take care of me half an hour earlier! Is it any wonder I dislike Kohl's? Something goes wrong every time I go there.
First job? I guess my first real job was waitressing at a summer lodge where guests from IL would come & stay a weekend, a week, or more. Most of my family worked there at one time or another. The girls waitressed, the boys did outside maintenance & Mom cleaned the cottages. It opened in the spring for weekend spring fishing groups & I would be asked to work to serve them. We had two waitresses & several kitchen help during the summer & us girls had cabins to stay live in - two girls to a cabin. We worked 7-2 & 4 till everything was cleaned up after dinner. They served a pre-set menu till later. They did do wedding receptions but they were small - nothing like they are now. My pay was $18.75 a week & I kept all my tips. They were pretty good because we had the same people to serve as long as they stayed. The weekend fishermen tipped the best & the owner would call me to work those weekends. Summer guests didn't usually arrive till Memorial Day weekend & there weren't many after Labor Day & school started, but I would get called in for any weekend people. Since my whole family had worked there I think I was favored. I worked 2 summers, I think. After graduation I went right into nurses training. The first part was classroom instructions only & after that we worked the floor & rotated hospitals with our instructor's guidance. We got paid when we did floor work. We earned between $15.00 & $20.00 every week(?) or two weeks depending on the hospital. The university hospital paid the most & maybe the mental hospital. I don't remember all the details. But I paid my share of monthly rent & food, plus I had money for new clothes. Amazing how far those dollars stretched.
Mary, it's fine with me if you want to fill in till Marm gets back. Guess I only got tonight yet to start it then. It went OK even though I had the other thread to start also. Maybe Marm will be back tomorrow or even yet today. I miss her. I did remember that your regular knitting group isn't meeting right now, but I recall there was a day or two when you & GD got together to knit. I thought maybe you were still doing that. No big wedding I'm sure & even if they do, we won't be going. I was happy when Cheryl married Jeff after her previous marriage failed. Joe has no desire to re-marry or so he said a few years back. I know that could change. He's still young enough but he likes his freedom.
Phyl, is it still snowing in LaCrosse? Nothing here. Too bad it doesn't fall where it would be appreciated! I think this current storm is going to miss us. We might get rain. I don't get as excited about rain at this time of year.
Shragae, did you see my post when I asked if you would like to take a week to start this thread? If I missed your answer, I'm sorry to be asking again. I heard about Katie Couric's book when it hit the shelves. I really liked her when she was on the Today program with Bryant. I thought she changed after that & I didn't follow her.

Marlene, you brought back the memory of my working at a summer resort on Lake Superior my first summer out of high school (my very first job). It sounded similar to yours. There was a lodge and cabins. Another girl and I made the beds and cleaned the cabins lodge rooms every day, and then did the laundry of the sheets and towels. A couple other girls were waitresses. We were furnished room and board, staying in cabins, and paid $80/month (maybe I’m wrong on those $$). I don’t know what the waitresses’ base pay was. We would get a few tips when the guests left too, but I don’t remember them being too big. I worked there 2 summers. We would get one day a week off. I met DH at college my first year, so my second summer there he would drive up the shore to visit me on his days off, and sleep in his car. It didn’t always match up with my days off, so he would go fishing, etc. until I was done working. That was back in 1954-55. The resort is still there but looks very modernized and different with different owners of course. Thanks for bringing back those memories.

Ok I'm jumping in w/both feet to get to things and answer the Question. A reminder I sometimes faster w/one hand than thee other. so who knows where you might letters mixed. As I always do. Mary-- As i got it Marlene you said in order. And Mary would be before me anyhow. As W is after S. I've been wondering to. Isn't Shragae helping? Or does she want to stay from that? Sooo happy to be back.. My first jobs was baby sitting for a few cents. @ 12 was upstairs 2 little Indian girls. the Prettest and sweetest girls ever seen. That was when we moved to Kansas a few mo. another was was also few cent like and nickle. also down stairs arpt. one when we moved back here. I washed the dishes and heled and just a few things. And later @ 15. I sure don't recall how much but 6 kids. I ironed and kept the house up and fed the kids. After married and 16 then it was 5 kids. she had broke her leg and in a cast from hip to the foot. I washed and dii all the chores. The boy about 10. He would carry the clothes to the lines for me to hang up. Great kids to. But my job as waitress few yr.s later. like 3. I made .90 an hr. Worked from 9 to 7. PM. I was hired as a waitress and he said he was going hire a dishwasher. didn't happen . so I did that as well as a lot of cooking and ects. Not many tips at all out there in those days. Unless in classy place. I did everything some times. I was pretty darn good. I was always busy and fast at it. the bummer was I rush around the counter w/plates in hand and forever hit hip bone. on the edge on the counter. Had a huge bruse that didn't have a chance to heal. I am pooped. I have read tomorrow and catch up. Thanks so much Marlen and ALL of you for keeping us going.. G'Nite.. Marm~`

Marm, it’s good to see you back and with comments and all. You didn’t take or get much time off! But, Marm, you are next for starting. Our last names haven’t been involved in setting the order that Marlene suggested, so Marm comes before Mary, right?
I forgot about babysitting jobs. I did that too, but the pay was usually only $1 for the whole night, and happened only once every 2 or 3 weeks, nothing I could count on. In a rural community people didn’t go out like they would in a bigger town. I’ve been a chatter box today, but now this is my last post. Goodnight!
