Hello Ginny - I hope they can fix your cable. - I hope you and your DS stay warm and don't have any problems from the cold weather. I liked the flying geese units too, but I'm too lazy to do something like that and I think I wouldn't stick with making one of those every day (as well as all the fabric cutting) I pulled out those fat quarters today that I thought would work for a temperature quilt and they are just right. I am planning to copy the one from the blog I linked, but my temperature ranges will be a bit bigger since I just have 9 fabrics to use. Today I starched and press the 9 fat quarters and starting cutting some pieces up so I'll be ready to start on Jan 2nd with the temps from Jan 1st. I'm making my pieces 2 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches long and when the two pieces (high and low) are sewn together it gives me a 5 inch strip for each day. I'm attaching a picture of my chart and fabrics. This morning I pulled out a small quilt kit that I had bought at a quilt show probably about 5 years ago or more. It came with all the pieces already cut and marked. I started piecing it and finished the center section (a sawtooth star) and then realized that the kit didn't have the correct pieces to finish the parts that went around the star - very frustrating. So I just went ahead and bordered the star with the fabric they'd given and finished it as a block. They gave backing and batting too, so it's ready to quilt. I'm not sure if I posted a picture of the 4 Patch Frenzy quilt top, so I'm adding that too. It was an easy quilt to make, just a bit tiring sewing all those pieces together. Hope everyone stays safe in the bad weather and that you all get to do some crafting. Take care!

CJ,I love the colors you picked for your temp quilt. The frenzy 4 patch is lovely.. It's terrible that your quilt kit didn't contain everything it should. I know you'll put the rest to good use though but it has to be disappointing
My lights keep flickering off so electric might be down. That would really be a disaster because our heating is electric. Pipes would definitely freeze and we probably would also so I'm praying that it doesn't go out. It's 10pm and minus 22 so far. We can't make a fire in the wood stove because it's too windy and would be a huge fire risk.

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all surviving the weather Ruth - I sure hope you don't lose your electricity, I'll keep hoping for the best for you and your DH to stay safe. My heating is electric too, so I worry about that during storms. Ginny - Hope you were able to get your cable fixed. Phyl and Sue - Hello It's been raining all day here, only a few times was it heavy. The temperatures have been in the 40s, but I think by tomorrow afternoon we will get the cold weather that is moving across the country. I pulled out the small quilts (table runner and wall hanging size) that I had backing for and I was able to find batting pieces for all 6 of them. So they are laying out ready to start machine quilting. I'm hoping I can get them all done by the end of the month. I also tried out a pattern for a house block. I just love all the house blocks. This one was not too hard, but I did have to change a few measurements because the pattern had you paper piecing the roof section and I didn't want to do that, so I just pieced it. I used some fat quarters, so I had enough to make four houses and I just need to figure out what fabric to use to sash them and maybe find a pretty red and blue fabric for the border. This will make a nice wall hanging size quilt. Hope you all get to do some crafting. Take care

Well I am answering on my phone- so that means I am going from memory and making little sense.
CJ- both quilts are so pretty! I loved them both but have a soft spot for the house quilt. (A house quilt is on my bucket list ).you did a great job, but then you always do! Indeed that stinks that the kit you bought is missing a fabric. Nice job working around that problem but it’s still disappointing.
Ruth- prayers that you keep your electricity. This storm sure looks like a monster and capable of causing a lot of trouble. Hope you do not get much snow.
The pin cushion is finished - think it really turned out cute.

CJ,I really like the house blocks.the first time I saw a house block I didn't care for them but you've made really pretty ones
Ginny, well I guess they didn't get your internet fixed.I know how it is to have no internet and have to rely on a phone. It wasn't fun. Looks like you got the pinchusion done just in time.
Well we survived last night and hopefully will tonight too. It's not going to be quite as cold.Last night it hit -35 and high today was about -11 but starting tomorrow it will be warmer for at least the next 10 days...at least that's what they're saying now.I hope neither of you gets hit with extreme low temps or snow.

Hello Ginny - Hope you can get your cable/internet working soon. Ruth - I'm glad you are surviving the cold, hope it starts getting warmer each day. It's really cold here (at least for this area) and windy today. We had some rain and snow showers earlier. I got up earlier today so I could start running the furnace to hopefully get the house warm, but it's not getting that warm. I haven't been back upstairs but hopefully it's warmer up there. I'm getting the afternoon sun now and hope that brings a bit of warmth. I'm worried about the weekend, since it's still supposed to be cold and windy here. Just have to do what I can I haven't worked on any crafting today, I'm not much in the mood. I was trying to motivate myself to do some hand quilting, but we'll see Take care everyone

Ruth, are you supposed to be as cold tonight as you were last night? I did a check on my phone, and it looks like you are supposed to warm up a bit tomorrow. Did you get much snow? This big storm hit Buffalo hard, I heard about 85 mph winds and of course lake effect snow. You still have some family there, right? I hope you do warm up over the next few days. Have you been able to get any crocheting in?
CJ- I checked with my phone and its actually colder in your area than here. Well I keep my friend in Gaithersburg in my phone for weather, and its colder in Gaithersburg than it is here. I have also head of power outages, and hope you have kept yours. Were you able to get your house warmed up? This must be so frustrating for you, I remember the effort you put into getting repairs done to your furnace last year, and how frustrated you were with the service men.
I do hope we can all stay comfortable and with heat during this storm.
My internet is back and it only took 2 days to fix it. Ha ha ha. Today was busy, I worked this am and then had some visitors during the day. I also had some coordinating with people at my church, looks like a few people are sick so I will be helping out with music a bit more than I thought I would be. Many people are sick, including 2 of the musicians. Yesterday I called the propane company to request a refill of my tank- they are coming Wednesday. from what I can see I have enough to last for a few weeks.
Think I am going to crochet awhile.

Woke up to 4 degrees!!! That probably sounds warm to Ruth, but it sure felt cold. I did get some crocheting in last night but slept poorly. Had a a bit of baking today which I did get done. Now going to relax for awhile and perhaps take a short nap

CJ, I wouldn't be in the mood for crafting either if I had worked so hard to get my furnace fixed and also spent money and it still didn't work. Well I don't have a furnace so don't have that problem but the baseboard heater in our bedroom has some kind of problem but we have plug in heaters so we can keep fairly warm and this heater actually works better than the baseboard one ever did. You'll get your quilting desire back soon. I started this last night and never finished I woke to 40 degrees and yes 4 sounds cold even to me . It's supposed to be in low 40's almost all weeks then 30's so we'll see when the new round of extreme cold comes in.They did revise the weather report to say that Wed night into Thurs the low was actually 42 which broke the previous record of 40 back right after we moved here. Our first two years were both filled with extreme lows like that and, in fact, there was a day when the high was -35.It didn't feel too bad though. I guess because I was over 30 years younger.I also had a lot more "insulation". I was fat. Ginny, what did you bake? I suppose I should bake something also but I probably won't.We also won't be having anything special for Christmas dinner. I hope you have a great time with your family. As far as crafting goes,I've been making waffle stitch hats. These are made from the top down and the person that has a video for it makes the top so that it's not the usual flat and boring looking top. It's very textured.

Hello Everyone - Happy Christmas Eve to you all Ginny - I hope today was more restful for you and the cold isn't too bad there. I'm glad your internet is working again. Hope you enjoy the baking. Will all your family be getting together tomorrow? I'm worried about running out of oil, like you with the propane. I'm scheduled for a delivery this coming Wednesday too. The gauge that shows the level of my oil is old and broken, so I never know how much I have. Ruth - The waffle stitch hats sound cute, hope you enjoy making them. Sounds like you are having a heat wave there I'm glad your have some heaters that help. Phyl and Sue - Hello It's so cold here! It's about 18 degrees now and I'm not sure how cold it got last night. Keeping the downstairs warm has been a struggle. It was 62 down here earlier and I have it up to 67 now. Upstairs has been warmer, but not as warm as usual more like in the mid 70s rather than the 80s. I guess it's just so cold outside it hard for the house to heat up. I've been checking the pipes since one bathroom and the kitchen have pipes on the outside wall. I also checked the pipes in the basement since I have one room that is not very insulated and of course that's where a lot of water pipes are! I also went out to get the mail and while I was out there I started my car and drove it up and back in the driveway once. I was worried about it not starting. Most of the time I don't mind living alone but it's when things like this are going on that it would be nice not to have to worry about it all alone. But I'm fortunate to have a house to be in and food to eat, so I'm not complaining. I did get quite a bit of quilting things done this morning since I was staying upstairs where it was warm. I managed to mark and safety pin the 6 small pieces that I want to machine quilt, so they are all ready to quilt. I also traced onto fabric an embroidery pattern of a snowman that I want to try. I'm going to try using the backstitch for this, which is new to me. I usually use a stem stitch when I embroider. And finally I pulled a bunch of fabrics that I think I will be using for Pat Sloan's next Wednesday block of the week which starts on January 4th. The name of it is Sweet Childhood Memories. I don't usually match my fabric to the theme, but I've had some Crayola crayon fabric for several years and I'm going to use with a bunch of other really bright color fabric. It should be interesting and hopefully fun. Take care everyone and enjoy your evening

CJ,I'm sorry it's so cold there. And yes,it's bad enough worrying about pipes when I have dh here but I'd never be able to do it alone...well I'd actually move if he wasn't here although I really am not fond of the idea of living in an apartment with people around. I'm glad you got to do some things in quilting. That childhood memories quilt sounds really fantastic. And you mentioning crayola fabric reminded me that I had a scrub top for work that was made of Crayola fabric and when I went to start IV"s or take care of central lines on children I'd tell them that someone scribbled all over my shirt. One of the pediatric nurses used to say that I felt that I needed to bond with a child before doing what I had to do with them. I also had other things I did to try to allay children's fears. This was a nice reminder. I have one vehicle that I haven't started in about six months but it's on a battery tender so it should be ok. Next time I go anywhere I'll try it and see.
The weather really has been weird.Yesterday all day the temp was in the single digits. At 11pm it went up to 40.
Ginny, I'm glad your internet is working now. It's just crazy that it took so long for them to get it fixed.. Yes I do have several family members that live in western Ny. One of my brothers and three of his children and their families live in Niagara Falls and my sister lives with him. He posted a picture on FB of shovelling snow.It didn't look like they got all that much. The places that get all the snow usually are the small towns south of Buffalo.

CJ- Oh I totally respect and understand your apprehensions about making sure your heat is working and pipes are not freezing. My dear friend always has one pipe that freezes in her kitchen when it gets this cold, and. Her son is a plumber.. I know she has been waiting for about 5 years for her son to come up with a solution to the frozen pipe problem. I do get it with respect to making large household decisions on your own, and sometimes contractors do not treat women with respect. Very frustrating. I do hope that you are able to stay comfortable in this awful cold spell, which is supposed to pass in a few days Would you be able to get some insulation on those pipes that are not in a well insulated area? If they are easy to reach its not a challenging job, and might help your peace of mind. Yes a good idea to make sure that the car starts in this super cold weather. Do not sell yourself short, you are doing a wonderful job. That is great news that you were able to get those pieces ready for quilting. Think you will find the back stitch very pretty and fun to do. I think I prefer it over the stem stitch.
Ruth- heard my stupid governor today remark on how the entire state was hit with severe cold and precipitation. Glad your brother in the Niagara area did not get much snow. Its pretty but can be such a pain in the neck to remove if there is a lot. Those waffle stitch hats sound like fun and attractive to make too. What I baked is gold rush brownies, which are insanely easy. They are made from crushed grahams, sweetened condensed milk and chocolate chips. Its an old recipe from my childhood. Tomorrow I am baking butter letter (a recipe from my husbands side of the family) and decided to make gold rush brownies to represent my side of the family.
My Internet problems started a week ago. May be a little bit before that. I noticed that I had to keep logging into my router with my Internet password which is unusual. And then I asked my son about it he said he was having the same problem. The minute I realized what was going on I knew that I needed a new router. I called the cable company told him I needed a new router and they put me through all these diagnostic tests and then said that they thought the problem was fixed which it was not. The second phone call they also put me through the same diagnostic tests and concurred that I needed a service call to replace the router! Gee I could’ve told them that. The technician showed up a day later when scheduled, and his first words were when he saw my router was that it was a piece of junk and it needed to be replaced. He upgraded things and put in a router plus a new cable box. The router needed to be programmed through the office and he was unable to do that immediately. That is what made me go into a second day waiting for the repair. The same test came back the next day and was able to somehow get the router so that it was programmed and working. It sure was a long process but it seems to be running OK now.
Just got back from church, and I think I’m going to read for a while. I have more cooking and baking to do tomorrow when I will be seeing my family. Happy Christmas Eve to each of you, and I hope everyone is able to sleep well.
Ginny

Merry Christmas to all of You Hope you are having a wonderful day. Ruth - I'm glad your weather has been warmer. I'm glad I could give you a nice reminder of your scrubs and time working with children I'm like you and I really hate to think about living in an apartment. I've lived in a detached house my whole life. But it's too much for me to take care of a house and yard like this and sadly I know it would be better if I just rented something. Ginny - I'm glad the internet problems are fixed and hopefully your new router and cable box will be good for a long while. Hope you enjoy time with your family today. I'd never heard of those brownies, so I looked up the recipe and they look good. I may get the ingredients and try them this coming week. The rooms I have with pipes that I worry about stay pretty warmish. I keep the doors open to the cabinets they are under all winter and the ones in the basement are insulated, so hopefully I'll be O.K. Maybe the cold weather I've had this weekend will be the coldest for the rest of the winter (wishful thinking ). It was really cold in the house yesterday, I was not able to get the downstairs temperature out of the 60s. But today I've been able to get it into the low 70s so far. The coming week is supposed to be warmer. I really should call and get the furnace looked at, but I can't think what they can do that would make the downstairs heat better. The last technician that was here last year was a bit scary - he was cussing the whole time he was here, I was just glad when he left. So I really don't want to call anyone again unless I really have to. I found out my DB and DSIL both have covid. They live away from me, so I can't help them. I worry about them both because they have other health issues and I've heard that covid makes them worse. They went to the emergency room and did get some medication to take, so hopefully that will help. I finished machine quilting the 6 small pieces this morning and pulled out some binding that I had already made to use for some of them. Since these were most just ways to play with fabric (2 of them were a kit), I'm going to make some of the binding scrappy. I think I'll trying sewing it onto the back and then machine sewing it down on the front with these pieces. I hope to get these done this week. Take care everyone

Merry Christmas my dear friends.
Quiet day here. Hubby is napping and I'm watching football while crocheting.
CJ, it sure would be nice if this was the last of the cold weather. I know that won't happen here for sure. Is there another place you could call to have someone look at your furnace? I think you said you were calling the company that installed it so it might cost a bit to have someone else come in but it could be worth it if they get it running the way it should. But you know best what will work for you
I've never lived in an actual apartment but I've lived in side by side duplexes and they were not good experiences. The only thing good is that usually if something breaks they will fix it.
My ds, his wife, and two of the kids have covid but don't have other conditions so I'm sure they'll be ok.
Oh and it's not the pipes freezing that's the problem, it's them bursting because of freeing that I worry about
