Thinking Mistake #6: Self-Deluded Thinking
You rationalize by telling yourself things you don't really believe at other times.
"If no one sees me eating, it doesn't count."
"It won't matter if I give in to my cravings."
Me this weekend: It won't matter if I overeat I hardly ever overeat.

The scale knows everything and I can't fool it. It records everything so it is foolish to think an extra bite or two doesn't count.

"It doesn't matter what I eat now since I already ate something I shouldn't have; I'll start again tomorrow." I think this is one of the biggest falsehoods I tell myself. I rarely start "tomorrow" and if I do, I find another excuse to go off plan. Each bite matters.

I rationalize that because I can get away with it on occasion, it means that I can probably get away with eating _____ now or I can exercise it off. One of the big lightbulbs that went off for me working Beck was acknowledging this thinking error. Weight regain for me has always been a little bit here and a little bit there and this thought always opens the door and invites me in when it begins.

msu91 Colleen, this is what happens to me also. I will have something that doesn't affect my weight so I rationalize and think I can continue to do that and then Bam! My weight jumps and I'm so surprised! Being consistent every day, every meal, every bite helps me be successful!

Linda: I do the same thing and I'm always so surprised.
Every once in a while I have to talk to myself and remind myself of the science/math behind maintaining my weight. No matter what I might think it is still basically calories in/calories out and my thinking cannot change the actuality of that. As Audrey said: the scale always knows.

Often I catch myself thinking: > "I'm so upset with DH! I'll show him! I'll eat some chocolate! There! That will fix him!" OR > "DH has gone to bed already. I can get some ice cream and he'll never know." OR > "For once I'm out shopping without DH along at my side. I can get a cookie and he won't have to know." How stupid is this! The body will gladly suck in the calories. DH knowing or not knowing has nothing to do with it. As Audrey so wisely said, the scale knows everything and I can't fool it.

ladymajky We can always blame it on the husband no worries if there is no husband. We can blame it on the dog, cat, sibling, co-worker, parent even if deceased as long as it is anyone but us.
