Mmm! Ice Cream! Yum!
My grandmother "cooked" the ice cream fluid before putting it into the container inside hand crank freezer. Then Grandpa, Daddy and the uncles would take turns with the crank. My cousin and I would "steal" the pieces of ice with rock salt on them from the freezer while the men cranked. When it was well-frozen, they covered the whole freezer with an old folded quilt and a burlap bags ("gunny sacks").
Mama's family made the ice cream the same way; however, the women also added fruits (strawberries, peaches, pineapple, etc.) to the custard mixture.
The ice cream was a lot like custard -- very rich. A guy I went with in high school invited me to his grandparents' home for homemade ice cream once, and it was not at all rich like Grandma's. (I ate it without comment.) Some of my friends purchase a carton of ice cream mix from the grocery store, and it's pretty good too.
Had not heard of the sweetened condensed milk recipe, but it would work. The sweetened condensed milk is really like the mixture that is cooked on the stove.
