Good morning!
Over night, we had another thunder storm. I sure hope it doesn't storm while our church people are distributing the 200+ backpacks this morning. Make it a wonderful day! What are your weekend plans?

Fred was hoping for a quiet day for his birthday today but Debbie texted that Jim and her wanted to come to town to take him out for lunch or dinner to celebrate. He said lunch hoping they won’t decide to spend the night as they stay up way too late and don’t quiet down when we go to bed so it really messes us up for the rest of the weekend. She asked where he wanted to go and he told me he was hungry for Mexican so looked up a new place (to us it’s new as it’s been around since 2012) and it has excellent reviews and is very reasonable and actually offers it’s weekday lunch specials on Saturday. One special includes tamales which he loves. It’s only about ten minutes away on the other side of the river. Debbie has never heard of it but said sounds good to her and I know Jim loves Mexican so hopefully it will be as good as the reviews say it is.
At the Farmers Market I bought some very nice tomatoes, corn on the cob and a candy onion. I had no idea what a candy onion was and the guy said it’s vidalia! I said why you don’t just say vidalia and he said you just need to broaden your horizons! Gave me my laugh for the day as he also laughed when he said it but hey learned something new yesterday!
Woke up to rain and it’s supposed to rain most of the day but we do need it. They now say temps will be in the upper 70’s through next week. Hope that’s right as I would love to open the house up and give the a/c a break.

Good morning. Sure wish we'd get some of that rain here. So dry, grass is turning brown and gardens are not producing.
Sandy, I've never heard of a vidalia called a candy onion. That's what I try to buy when they're available. I'm not a big onion fan unless they're cooked, don't like them raw.
Most of our Mexican restaurants around here are Americanized Mexican and not so good. My favorite is fajitas but always get so much that I have a couple of extra meals to bring home. Other than my usual walk and coffee this morning I'm not sure what I'm going to do today. Bought chicken yesterday for chicken spaghetti but not really in a cooking mood. Have a pretty good book so might be doing that.
good morning Phyl bettyj

Good morning. I'm already tired as I spent a good hour hour and a half in the kitchen making my first ever ice cream base.
I think I mentioned that there are a few basic types of bases. The French base includes egg yolks to help solidify the ice cream. Apparently the Philadelphia style is very similar but no egg yolks. Then there's something called the Sicilian version...
I've never been much of a baker. I'm a really good cook but not a baker as I just never learned how to make pie crusts or things of that sort. Kind of funny because I can make the special bread that we have on Shabbat every week but to me that's a little different...
So I had to whip four egg yolks and then temper them with the cream mixture so that they wouldn't cook when added to it. A lot of work but interesting to do...
The base is currently in the fridge cooling. I made a mint vanilla as my son wants chocolate mint ice cream. The chocolate will be in the form of chocolate chips and also some crunched up grasshopper Keebler cookies which are a mint cookie with chocolate....
That gets added at the last part of the churning...
I did taste the base just to make sure it didn't need more sugar or anything else and it tasted fine to me so hopefully all will turn out. I'll probably try to churn it about 11:00 and when that's done goes in the freezer for three to four hours.
I think my son has to be at Macy's by about noon so he'll probably have it available later this evening.
But that already wore me out LOL.
I do love doing things though. I am definitely a domesticated woman!

Shagrae, I envy you trying the ice cream maker. I had one at one time that went on my stand mixer. My son & grandson really liked it but they especially liked the vanilla ice cream that was just cream, half&half, and sugar. It wasn't cooked but just mixed together and put in the container and turned it on to churn. I tried one with egg yolks one time and they didn't like that one. More like a custard soft ice cream. My mixer broke so couldn't make ice cream any more. Anxious to hear how yours turns out. I'm not a baker either but can cook pretty good. I don't really care to do either one. Certain things I like to do but the older I get the less house things I like to do.

It's raining here (we need it) and 71 degrees. The predicted high is 79 degrees. I'm sitting here with a warm shirt over me. It's not so much cold, but damp. I refilled my medication containers and that is about all I plan to do today.

Had a friend tell me the Mexican restaurant we’re going to is her favorite so am feeling even better about it. Debbie called Fred and we’ll meet them at the restaurant and then come back here to visit and play some games then they will head home - yay! I love them to death but a little goes a long way 😉☺️

Hi!
Thanks for starting us this morning, Molly. Thunder storms are nice. Where does your church distribute the backpacks? Storms clean the air, and people with allergies can go outside! Lovely! We had a little rain this morning, too, and maybe two claps of thunder. It sounded good to me.
Shragae, your ice cream sounds great! My mother always made cooked ice cream, because she liked eggs in it. I'll bet you'll love it. Did you know that you can mix together 1 can of sweetened condensed milk and 12 oz of strawberry soda and freeze it for a tasty ice cream treat? Goes together quickly, and is churned the same way all recipes are. Orange soda works, too.
Sandy, I love to hear about your Farmer's Market! Glad you got what your wanted. Is the Mexican restaurant part of a chain? I can't get tamales where we go. Happy Birthday to Fred!
I used to be a pretty good cook and baker, but now, I take shortcuts. DH helps get things prepped, and I can usually do so-so.
Jenny, I am glad the egg was separate. You have had several good items from MOW! I have a friend who called yesterday to say she got her first meal, and ate the entree, but put the veg away for later. Wish you two could team up!
Hugs!
Diane

°Temp yesterday got to 94° but cooled off nicely in evening. I sat out side for awhile and listened to the high school marching band practicing They did go over and over the same thing but still was nice. We have a bigger band that we have ever had and would love to watch half time some time but will just listen from my porch, first football game coming up soon. First one before school even starts and some times is away game. Don't have the schedule yet, enjoy the fireworks when they get a touch down from the front porch as well. Usually just on ground ones so just listen Up in air would be too dangerous. We got new lights for the field and though we had some guess it was time for new ones. They are lot bigger and I imagine a lot brighter as well.
Information of the day!!
A Vidalia onion is a hybrid Granex yellow onion lauded for its sweet, mild flavor. Page adds, "Vidalia onions can only be grown in the state of Georgia outlined in a 20-county area."
Vidalia onions are the official state vegetable of Georgia.
Candy onions were developed as a versatile variety that could be planted in almost all climates, allowing growers in various regions to produce sweet, low-sulfur bulbs. Prior to their release, many onion types only grew in specific areas with the required amounts of sunlight and were categorized as short-day or long-day onions. Candy onions are one of the few varieties that can be grown year-round in some regions. Despite their popularity, the origins of Candy onions are mostly unknown. Candy onions are a hybrid and fall in between the common onion and sweet onion categories. They are sweeter and less sulfuric than conventional onions, but some Candy onions are still considered more pungent than typical sweet cultivars. Varieties of sweeter onions were initially bred throughout Europe as scientists studied the sulfuric content within the bulbs, creating new types that contained high sugar and water levels. Several sweet onion varieties also arose in the United States in the early 20th century, contributing to the milder onion's popularity among home gardeners. Over time, new onion cultivars were specifically developed with improved growth characteristics, including Candy onions, leading growers to plant the onions in varying climates. Today Candy onions are found throughout the United States and are primarily a home garden variety. The onions are also produced through a few specialty growers and are sold through farmer's markets and select distributors, such as Specialty Produce.
We get both here but Vidalia have a shorter growing period. and guess no one else can use the name!! only get them in grocery stores. Enjoy!! Very good onions. We get the candy onions at the Amish farms. Off to my roadside stand which only has yellow onions. Will deliver some things to DD#1, DSIL is ready for corn on cob again.
NO other plans for the day and I am trying to get excited about company coming, but kind of hard when all they really want is my bedrooms.
Beautiful day, not too hot yet, and did call to get my lawn mowed. So many different kinds of grass, some is really high and raggedly looking and other is clover etc. All very green so looks good when mowed.
See some ads for back to school clothes and supplies but our family has never bothered until school starts. Just get the supplies the kids need and usually still hot days so wearing summer things. told Emma's Mommy I will help with shoes. no sandals at school. Dress code.

Hi!
It didn't rain during the backpack distribution. Yea! The Baptist Office sent us 72 backpacks, and our church members supplied another 143. Thirty were distributed prior to today's give-away to families that needed them. Each backpack had school supplies along with information about our church and the activities. We had some kids' lunch boxes too. It began at 10 a.m., and all items were gone by 10:40 a.m.
It was a drive-thru distribution in our church parking lot. At one point cars, were not only in line around the lot, but also about 1/2 mile along the street. All of us wore bright vests, and we had guys out on the street directing traffic. There were four tents with tables, and four kids' wagons that resupplied the tables.
After clean-up, three couples went to Bandana's for lunch and conversation. We totally enjoyed our morning, and the company of friends!
We're home, and I'm wondering if any of the thrift stores have some plaid wool shirts that I could use to make some of the pressing tools for my sewing room.
Maybe a nap first?! BBL! ~~Molly

Our school here did the Backpack give away and it was a huge I hear it's success I mean I've never seen so many people donate as I did for this this year. They had different styles from little cartoon ones for the small kids up to bigger once for the high schoolers. Remember we are a small town but still we probably gave away at least 500 backpacks. Remember we are a small town but still we probably gave away at least 500 backpacks It was fantastic.
Did you know if you use egg beaters You will not have to cook your ice cream base because egg beaters are already pasteurized, they're safe without cooking. I've done that many times and it's delicious. course I'm an ice cream lover and I don't think there's any kind or any way you could make it that I wouldn't like it.
Have a good day everyone
Jenny

We have an ice cream maker and it is electric and very easy to use. We can do sugar free ice cream and the peach is especially good. Always a trip to get ice and salt for the ice but other than that very easy. the ice just freezes the mixture and we have tried many, no cook ones are especially good. but sound much easier that what has been described here.
My Mom used to freeze lot of things in ice cube trays. Really easy. The kool aide frozen was our favorite. like a popsicle . and the root beer pop was a big winner!!

Ice cream. Y'all made me hungry for some good vanilla. Well, son got a lot done and they left for home about 1. It is a good 4 hour drive because they will stop once for a break. We need rain. My yard is brown. Temps over 100 don't help it.
