As I set us up for the week, I am shocked that itās really August 14.
Ruth, glad you and Dh both like the recipe for his bday cake (yay for a cooler day to turn on the oven). I admit I stay away from carrot cake because most recipes call for so much oil. Sounds like you are making good progress on the turtlesā¦ I know you are preparing to get items together to ship to your family out of state, are you planning on doing that soon?
CJ, did you start working on the chicken salad quilt? It always amazes me how much fabric it seems that you have in your personal stash. I know you do supplement from new purchases, but it seems like you have a decent amount of fabric in your home.
I made my first tulip last night! They do go easily and I can see that fabric selection and placement for each flower is important. Hope to make a few more flowers today. BBL

Hello - Hope you are both doing well today and having good weather. It's hot again here, with a chance of thunderstorms later. Ruth - I'm glad your cake came out good and that you and your DH enjoyed it. Here is my recipe for a Spice Cake: - Go to grocery store and buy one box of Duncan Hines Spice Cake mix and a tub of frosting, eggs and oil. Go home and make the cake Ginny - I'm glad you were able to make the tulip and it was easy. I bet all those tulips will be pretty. I bought a fat quarter bundle of Lori Holt fabric to make the Chicken Salad blocks. I wanted to use her fabric for her patterns. I probably won't start making them until the quilt along starts the last week of this month. This morning I starched and pressed some fabric and cut some pieces out. I don't know how it happened but I currently have three projects going at once I hope that I'll be able to get the three of these done in the next few weeks. Take care

Got a few tulips (or pieces that will become tulips) sewn, they need to be ironed and then sewn together. I am finding that the video is very helpful, so that is good. Not sure if I will be able to finish much more tonight as I have practice at church, but I am off to a good start.
Hope everyone had a good day.

CJ- love the way you thinkā¦..but I gotta say that cream cheese frosting is pretty darned easy to make!!! Now the spice cake mix? Oh I do not usually use cake mixes but if there is a ton of measuring of different spices that sure would help. I have to make a crumb cake for this weekend for church, and that starts with a vanilla cake mix. Now seriously, I do NOT know how you got tangled up in 3 projects going at once. Actually I am surprised that it is only 3.š think that is great that you bought the designers fabric for the chicken salad quilt. Bet it will be adorable.
Yes, will post pics of tulips when I am further along. They are easy enough and seem to be turning out cute.

CJ, only three!!! Yes I definitely can relate. It's great that you bought the designer's fabric to make the quilt. I know it's going to be very pretty. I don't usually like spice cake. This one is better today than it was yesterday when I first make it.
Ginny, I bet those tulips are really cute. I can't wait to see a picture. As busy as you are it's good that you started the quilt early. I laugh at the people in the crochet groups when they say they're starting early on Christmas gifts. It's not all that long until Christmas either.
My dgs that borrowed our truck came over today. He did an extremely thorough cleaning of the truck inside and out and bought new seat covers for all four seats. The two weeks that he wanted to borrow the truck for is up...those two weeks sure went fast...but he wanted to use it longer because the brakes on his truck are turning out to cost more than he thought and he needs to earn another couple weeks salary in order to pay for them. Of course we don't really use that truck anyway so no problem and he's taken good care of it so far.
Got an email from dgd out of town showing a picture of a puppy hat I made for her little brother when he was born. He is now 8. Her mom (my ddil) wondered if I would make a girl one for the new baby and of course I will. Not that she needs it right away even though the baby is due in two weeks because it's a winter hat and it won't be winter for awhile but I'll make it now since I'm sending a box next Tues when dh and I go to our yearly review of lab results visit to our doctor.I might even make a couple of them in two different sizes and colors

Good morning,
Ruth, nice that DGS is taking such good care of your truck- and that is surely a nice pay back for allowing him to borrow it. Brakes are expensive- heck everything is expensive Is he continuing to use your truck for another week or so? Yikes that pregnancy went fast- although I am sure itās not been a short time for DDIL. Prayers that the delivery goes well for both DDIL and your new DGD. Such an exciting time. And yes, itās scary to hear about others getting ready for Christmas, but for crafters we have to start early. So sweet that DDIL wants you to make a puppy hat for the little one! Itās such a joy when your efforts are appreciated. Guess the puppy will have at least pink inside its ears?? Are you ready to send the box out next week- but I bet the puppy hat has to go in that box also. You will make it in no time.
Busy amā¦.got one errand to run this afternoon and then I HOPE itās a quiet day. And time to make more tulips. G

I'm kind of late getting here. I seem to be buried in a pile of puppy hat parts. I'm not sure what size to make the hat so I've started 4 or 5. I don't have any parts sewed on yet. I asked my dgd to measure the hat they have that I made fpr dgs #4 when he was a baby but she hasn't seen my mail yet so hasn't answered. In the meantime I just made the main portion of the 4 hats following charts for hat sizes. the hat I'm starting to put parts on has pink ears with white inside and the next hat will have the opposite. The ear color matches the main part of the hat and the inner part matches the edging. I did find some of the yarn that I used to make that last puppy hat 9 years ago so will make that one except I'll use pink yarn where I used blue on the old one. The main part of the hat is Vanna White yarn in oatmeal colorway and makes a nice looking hat. It's also going to be larger because Vanna White yarn is thicker even though it's also a medium weight #4 yarn and also because I want it larger. It'll be good for winter
I guess CJ must have had an errand day today.
I hope you both had a good day.
Ginny, I do hope you were able to get some flowers made.

Ok, you know, I have an ideaā¦.for all those yarns that are slightly larger or smaller than the weight number- wouldnāt it be nice i the yarn companies came up with like a 4X yarn- meaning a medium weight 4 yarn that is a tiny bit chunkier than a standard Medium 4 yarn. I do not crochet a lot but know very well the frustration that comes into play when a medium weight yarn is called for but there is a broad window of thicknesses that fall into that category.
Ruth, I hope that DDIL gets back to you soon regarding the size of the puppy hat. The Vanna yarn in oatmeal sounds like a perfect color for the hats.
I got no flowers done yesterday- but that was expected as I had to finish preparing for the class I am teaching this morning. At some point I will head to Lowes to pick up a deck box I ordered, which will be helpful to store the cushions on outdoor furniture and a few additional items.
CJ- hope you slept well and got started on the chicken salad quilt.

Hello Ruth - I'm glad you were able to get a start on the hats. I like the color combinations. That was nice of your DGS to clean the truck for you. Ginny - Hope your class went well this morning. Hope you get a chance to make some more tulips this week. The Chicken Salad quilt along doesn't start until August 25th, so I have another week or so. I did go out yesterday to get groceries, so I didn't get any quilting done. This morning I finished making the top using the honey bun. I'm not really happy with how the top turned out. Sometimes it's just hard to know if a fabric will work with a pattern. I don't think this was the best choice of fabrics for this one. But it's done I hope to work on the quilt with the Fall panel next. It should be very easy with just sewing some strips around it. The other quilt that I started has more parts, but I've been wanting to make it for awhile so I hope to get it done by next week. This is the pattern: www.swirlygirlsdesign.com/delilahI'm making my quilt in purples and teals, with a white background. Pat Sloan released the layout and fabric requirements for her next quilt along which runs from September to November. I'm already wanting to pick fabrics for it I'm going to be pushing it to participate in all these quilt alongs through the rest of this year. Hopefully I can keep up. Take care

Ginny, I hope your class went well. I know you did a good job teaching so hopefully your students were just as good at learning'
CJ, that goat is SO cute. Yes you definitely need to make that one. I love it. If I quilted I'd make it too.
Well yesterday I did finish one of the hats but I thought of a better way to attach parts so I attempted to take the ears off of the finished one and in the process destroyed the main hat part. Luckily I had some others started although in adding the flaps to one of the new ones I wasn't paying attention enough and ended up putting them on slightly off of where they should be. On to another. I have to have all this stuff fully completed and packed to mail by Tues so I'm getting a little anxiety buildup. But,much as I hate going out I could do it a day of two later. I just wanted to do it on the same day we were already going to be out.
Ok back to work.

Good morning,
Aw Ruth, that is a shame that you have not been able to make it all the way through a hat to get it finished the way you like. I wonder if your ābloopersā really look fine and you are being hard on yourself. That being said, Tuesday is a long way off and I hope that you are able to complete as many hats as you want to send down to your family and new DGD.
CJ- yes I checked out the goat, who is absolutely adorable. I love the purple and teal color combination- not sure that I would ever decorate with it, but I find it stunning in a quilt. Oh I am so surprised! You are excited about participating in the next Pat Sloan quilt (I will have to check it out). Go ahead and pick out the perfect fabrics, or even if needed, pick up more. You love her designs and there is nothing better than working on a project that inspires.
My teaching went well enough, but I am glad it is over. Afterward I got my hair done and stopped at DD#1 houseā¦then off to Lowes to pick up an order. I got deck stain and a deck box. Started putting the deck box together last nite, which seems easy enough but I am having difficulty getting one part to click in. I will try again today on that, and if unsuccessful, ask DS to assist. This am I have to drop a cake off at church ( for coffee after a memorial service)and run another errand. Hope that this afternoon is mine and I can finish the deck box and get some tulips together.

Good morning Ginny and CJ. I hope you both have a good day.
Ginny you sure get a lot done in a day. DH said the same thing as you did...that I'm too hard on myself. I have all the parts done for the hats now just need to put them together.Back in 2022 dh saw deck boxes that looked good so he ordered one for our not so summer home and asked ds if they wanted one. DS said that ddil has been talking about needing one for awhile so dh ordered them one also. Ds put both together and both deck boxes have been used a LOT. I hope you can get that one piece to click into place.Luckily you have ds to fall back on.

Hello It's another hot and sunny day here, but the humidity is low. This morning I finished making the panel quilt and it turned out nice. Then I started making the half square triangles needed for the pinwheel blocks in the goat quilt. I hope to get them made tomorrow. I read through the pattern and it has more parts and assembly than I thought it would, so I'll have to take it one piece at a time. Hope you are having nice weather today and that you both get to do some crafting. Take care
