So make sure we have the most current version of the Texas political handbook: Cheating - ok. Getting freebies then giving that person government contracts - ok. Drag queens - BAD!! Books (in general) - BAD!! Being able to think for yourself - REALLY BAD!! Making medical decisions for yourself if you don't have a penis - THE WORST!!

Rene, don’t forget that in TX, trans people, also bad! www.texastribune.org/2023/06/02/texas-gender-affirming-care-ban/My kid has a hormone blocker. In CA we had to go through various types of screenings before they’ll just move forward with the procedure willy-nilly. Unfathomable that this bill forces kids who are already on the blockers to wean off. Parents of trans children do not force this treatment on their children nor are we the ones who suggest to our kids they may be trans. Our kids come to us with this (if the kids are fortunate enough to have supportive non judgy non bigoted open minded parents that they feel comfortable confiding in). We opt into these treatments after extensive conversations with medical professionals, videos and other publications from reputable sources. My son is still the same old kid he was before, same fabulous personality, still same sense of humor, same intelligence. Nothing on that front changed. He just now gets to feel on the outside as he’s always felt on the inside (and voiced since 2 years old when society and cultural influences on that front aren’t as pervasive). After we started the treatment his art project at school said everything. It had a collage of magazine cut outs of ice cream cones and cakes, the aurora borealis, cute little monkeys, and he added his own drawings of characters representing various LGBTQ+ persons (with 2 of the characters waving the trans flag) and he entitled it “A Whole Lot Happier.” As parents of trans kids we don’t make those decisions lightly and we’re not stupid. We know what we’re doing, same as any other informed medical decisions you may have to make on behalf of your child. Sorry for the rant, but bullshit legislation like that which would rather see my kid feel suicidal than feeling back to normal (over things and treatments that are none of anyone else’s business) make my blood boil.

finreporter, *hugs* . Their definition of "normal behavior" is neanderthal at best, mostly evil. These politicians sell hate and fear to their voters, and it's sickening how many people feel the same way. Your child is lucky to have a supportive parent

finreporter, it's all about parents' rights when it comes to banning books, twisting the way subjects are taught, etc. but forget about anything that doesn't line up with their 1950s agenda.

I believe people who are so opposed to others lifestyles are either in the closet, jealous and envious of people who decide to live their lives instead of trying to change who they are to please others.
We are all different. Why the Hell is it so difficult for people to back off and simply live and let live?
You don't like Trans people, Gay people, avoid them. It's that simple. Mind your own damn business. Live your perfect happy little lives and teach your children who to avoid and who to hate.
That way your youngster will know for certain if they are different or have any feelings that you strongly disapprove of they will never share that with you and you will never know who they really are.
They will find and trust other adults to be honest and real with. Your loss but at least you don't have to deal with the truth. Phew. Good for you.
Life is difficult. Deal with it!

birdgal, does it sometimes feel like a version of the Crusades? "Hate these people and change them or else!".

Yes, 160,000 years of evolution (about when modern Homo Sapiens appeared) and we have not gotten far from tribes in caves throwing rocks at each other.

We can thank the mouth-breathers and those who capitalize on their fears so that those doing the capitalizing can remain in power and accumulate more wealth, all at the expense of overall humanity. It's disgusting.

Who is more to blame? Those who manipulate or those who are manipulated? It's an unholy dyad.

I tend to blame those with the upper hand so definitely the ones who capitalize on stupidity and paranoia to their advantage. Like the meme about cookies (which I’m paraphrasing): rich capitalist with twenty cookies to the working class guy with 2 cookies: look! That immigrant is taking one of your cookies! Rich capitalist meanwhile retains all twenty cookies and doesn’t share with working class guy.

finreporter, I suppose I have to agree. Since the fear mongers know what they are doing, and I believe a lot of them don't subscribe to what they are peddling, just want the position and power.

Even as much as I loathe to admit it, even trump is savvy enough in the manipulation department to know exactly what he’s doing. The truly scary ones are the McConnells and DeSantises though. They don’t tend to say the quiet part out loud.
