Hi everyone. This is the last week of the current 7/7 challenge. I thought we might look at some food myths for the next few days.
We've all heard food myths and old wives' tales about food and nutrition. Is there any truth behind some of these myths?
Myth #1: Frozen foods are less nutritious than fresh foods. Truth: flash frozen vegetables and fruits may actually be more nutritious than some of their fresh counterparts. Because of the distance some "fresh" foods can travel from farm to table, they may actually be several weeks old by the time they hit the supermarket. Frozen vegetables and fruits are flash frozen quickly after picking. Plus, you may find more economical "out of season" fruits and veggies in the frozen section.
Myth #2: You have to give up all your favorite foods if you want to lose weight. Truth: Its unrealistic to think that you can cut out all the foods that you love without ever rebelling. They are foods that you love for a reason. By categorizing foods as good and bad, you are setting yourself up to want what you can't have. Don't make any food off limits. You can still eat your favorites without straying from your goals with moderation and portion control.
Myth #3: All packaged or processed foods are bad. Truth: While many packaged foods are highly processed, high in calories, sodium and added sugars, just because a food comes in a package doe not mean that it is bad for you. Brown rice, whole wheat bread, low-fat yogurt- all of these foods come in packages. Don't write off every food that comes in a package. Look at the ingredients first. Choose items made from the most wholesome ingredients and are low in sodium and added sweeteners.
QOTD: Cathy led us this past week in a great discussion about fruits and veggies. Do you eat any frozen F/V ?
Have you given up any favorite foods ? Can you realistically see yourself never eating them again ?
Do you eat any processed foods ? Keeping in mind that unless you are grinding wheat yourself, you are eating some processed food even when you use flours, grains, etc.

Do you eat any frozen F/V ? We freeze some of our produce and then eat it later...I love frozen mulberries later on. We also buy frozen peas and a few other things in winter.
Have you given up any favorite foods ? Can you realistically see yourself never eating them again ? I have not given up favorite foods...not mentally. That said, I do not actively seek them out when on a diet. I remember reaching goal weight in 1984 and thinking, "Finally I will have pecan pie!" while at Marie Calendar's - I could not finish it - it was too sweet
Do you eat any processed foods ? Keeping in mind that unless you are grinding wheat yourself, you are eating some processed food even when you use flours, grains, etc. Yes - breads, tinned vegetables, peanut butter, tahini...quite a few when I look in my cupboards

I have been away so haven't posted. DGS#2 graduated from HS. This is the last HS graduation for the grandchildren. All wonderful celebrations! Sorry I missed your last few days, CAthy enjoyed your week!
Frozen foods - not too many - I prefer fresh. I do eat some though. Given up favorite foods - this has been a life long struggle for me with sugar and desserts - As you can see by my goal I am now trying to figure out how to have "some/reasonable portion"....it is a lifetime learning. I gave up sugar for 2.5 years...once,. Processed foods - breads, some canned foods, peanut butter .... Marie

QOTD: Cathy led us this past week in a great discussion about fruits and veggies. Do you eat any frozen F/V ? Yes, I always have frozen fruits and vegetables in my freezer. The vegetables especially supplement the fresh ones I get, mostly in the winter.
Have you given up any favorite foods ? Can you realistically see yourself never eating them again ? I've not totally given up anything, but some things I severely limit and don't have in the house. I don't miss them as I know if I really want it I can have it, even if it means making a special trip to get it.
Do you eat any processed foods ? Keeping in mind that unless you are grinding wheat yourself, you are eating some processed food even when you use flours, grains, etc. There are processed foods, then there are processed junk foods. I tend to stay away from the junk foods and go for the least processed of the other foods.

Thanks to all who host this group, I enjoy it very much.
I do eat a lot of frozen F/V. I often freeze fresh produce in the summer. I also buy frozen peas, corn, broccoli, etc in the winter months. I love the fact that it is so convenient. We have a lot of fresh veggies in the summer, we have a garden, plus I buy it at the farmer's market, & supermarkets. I know that it is true, that sometimes the produce we see in the grocery store has been picked a long time when we get it.
I haven't totally give up any one food. I try to eat very little sugar. Last week, however, DD's bday celebration was at my house, I bought her the special chocolate cake that she loves, when the party was over, noone would take the leftover cake home. I was stuck with it. I should have thrown it straight into the garbage, instead, I kept it, I ended up eating almost all of what was left!!! Granted, it was less than 1/4 of the cake, & I ate it over a 2 day period, but anyway, I ate it!! I just simply cannot have chocolate in my house!
Processed foods: We all eat some processed foods, I try to steer away from the processed junky foods.

Thanks to all who have posted. I always worry that no one will show up on the board Do you eat any frozen F/V ? I freeze green beans, tomatoes, and blueberries and cherries during the summer to have during the winter. I do love Trader Joes frozen green beans. I do tend to stay away from canned veggies.
Have you given up any favorite foods ? Can you realistically see yourself never eating them again ? I don't see myself never eating a certain favorite food again. Not a realistic lifestyle. Luckily I am not a big fan of dessert or sweets, so that is not a problem. I definitely limit myself on some things, and treat as a special occasion food instead of an everyday food.Do you eat any processed foods ? Keeping in mind that unless you are grinding wheat yourself, you are eating some processed food even when you use flours, grains, etc. It's funny, but I would have said that I eat almost no processed foods, until I read that flour, peanut butter, etc are all processed. My thoughts went to items typically found in the center of the grocery stores, in boxes and bags. I do look for the most "unprocessed" foods, staying away from junk food and foods with a long list of unpronounceable ingredients. I read somewhere that if there were more than 3-5 ingredients, you probably should stay away from it.

Do you eat any frozen F/V ? Yes, it helps us avoid waste & we can keep things on hand. I don't freeze many things myself, but the plain (no added seasonings, oils, butter, sugar, etc) fruits and vegetables work well for us. I also use canned vegetables - seems more and more low/no sodium are available too.
Have you given up any favorite foods ? Can you realistically see yourself never eating them again ? I haven't given up any favorites. There are things I don't eat much of, but it's because I just don't care to. For favorite items that are not WW friendly, I try to be sure I am going to have time to enjoy and savor. I don't try to replace favorites like that with substitutes - I'd rather have the real thing rarely.
Do you eat any processed foods ? Keeping in mind that unless you are grinding wheat yourself, you are eating some processed food even when you use flours, grains, etc. As you point out, this does depend on the definition of "processed". Even milk, I suppose - since it's been separated and pasteurized. I guess when I think of processed, I think of things that have ingredient panels that seem to consist mainly of ingredients that sound more like chemicals than food. That said, a kind of guilty comfort food - mac & cheese made from the blue box with the packet of powder. Although, I think even that has had some changes recently to take out some of the artificial colors, flavors, etc

Thanks for the great week Cathy. Thanks for stepping up this week Jan.
QOTD: Cathy led us this past week in a great discussion about fruits and veggies. Do you eat any frozen F/V ?
I love frozen peas and corn. I also keep frozen broccoli hand and use it often.
Have you given up any favorite foods ? Can you realistically see yourself never eating them again ?
I've always believed I can't give up certain foods while on plan unless I plan to give them up forever. Since I don't see this happening, I don't use this as a plan.
Do you eat any processed foods ? Keeping in mind that unless you are grinding wheat yourself, you are eating some processed food even when you use flours, grains, etc. Yes. I use convenience and processed foods. I love my n/s added diced mangos.
